In my Mandrake Installation I can also only set the screen size to 1024x768 (and smaller); if it is any larger, my display can't show it; I tried to update Xorg, but it didn't help either. You probably saw it, but check this Debian post DEBIAN POST LINK Seems others have struggled with this too, but sounds like it can work. Go for it. EDIT: Looks like BIOS might be the involved too as well as the default config file Check out this BSD post.
