papaschtroumpf
I read yesterday that an important security flaw had been uncovered and fixed in the Sun java engine. I'm running 1.4.2_04 and the current version on Sun's site in 1.4.2_06. What is the proper procedure to upgrade? If I download the file from Sun and run it, will it uninstall the old version? Do I need to manually remove the old version? If so what's the proper way to do it. Is it possible to get jva as an rpm instead so that I can pick up updates automatically when there are security issuees like this one? Thanks
Artificial Intelligence
You'll have to uninstall the previous version of Java. Also the link you're made to your browser have to be removed before the new install.

Also, since I'm upgrading from 1.4.2_04 to 1.4.2_06 it should all get installed in the jre1.4.2 (not sure it's the exact name but I would think it doesn't change) so I don;t think I have to worry about the links right? Artificial Intelligence
If I remember correct the Java folder is under /usr (eg: /usr/java). To remove it: use your favorite console. cd /usr su <type password> rm -r java You also need to remove the symlinks to your browser. Eg: If you installed the symlinks universal and if it's firefox. In root cd /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins rm -r libjavaplugin_oji.so Now you are ready to install the new version :) Edit: I'm moving the thread to Command Shell etc. etc.
papaschtroumpf
Interestingly /usr/java already contains two links: j2re1.4.2_04@ jre1.4.2_04@ both of which point to ../../usr/lib/jre-1.4.2_04/ so it looks like what I probably will need to remove those links as well as the entire ../../usr/lib/jre-1.4.2_04/ directory. Artificial Intelligence
Where does the two links refering to? In usr/java there should be a folder called something like jre2_1.4.2...something
papaschtroumpf
per the post above they actually link to ./../usr/lib/jre-1.4.2_04/ I think I should be able to handle it from here, if not, I'll be sure to post here again.
