Guest Astijf
Hi, I upgraded from 9.1 to 10. But when I start up, I can't log in to KDE. It always gives me wrong password error. I tried to start a shell, and use startx. Then it gives me the error Authentication failed - Can't start x - server Perhaps you do not have console ownership? Does anybody have suggestions? Artificial Intelligence
It's a commen problem I've heard that X wouldn't start after an upgrade. Did you back up the stuff you're using before upgrading? If you did I'll recommend Installing mdk 10 instead of upgrading. (it's better and more painless) .:=The AI Dude=:. Guest Astijf
Hi AI! Guess I might end up doing just that. Everything I need is on separate disks, so it should be ok. But I'm stubborn enough to find out what's wrong. Actually, I can get X to start, after I boot with failsafe. I put a file with my username in /var/run/console, and I can start it. But when I just boot, it's a no go, and the file is deleted again. Thx, Arian
Artificial Intelligence
Yep, there's a risk to break something when upgrading .:=The AI Dude=:. Edited October 4, 2004 by Artificial Intelligence
Guest arunvragh
I don't know about this 10.1 affair, but I use cooker a lot, selectively (it has borked my system a cuple of times) but you get wise. I am on Kernel 2.6.3.16 Gnome 2.8 KDE 3.3 Xorg 6.8.1 Last 3 from third party (apparently broken) packages. BTW I have the 9.2 version of MCC. So my PERL version is not up to date. That's why I have not been able to get to 2.6.8.12 kernel. It demands drakxtools backend, the latest mkinitrd and bootloader utils and this is what hosed my system once. Harddrake doesn't load at boot time. The CD drive goes missing. I guess it has something to do with udev, never been able to figure that out. On top of it the Nvidia driver doesn't compile. You work around it but then GLX is missing. Moreover MCC from 10 onwards has many features but is very buggy for me. Right now my system works fine, except that Konqueror doesn't connect to the web. I use Firefox so that doesn't bother me. Everything else is fine on a totally jumbled up system. Let's hope my good times last
