How do I remove installed software from Linux?

I installed and was running Xmms 1.2.10 and everything was working awsome. I got a segmentation fault and reported the bug but it is still unresolved. My question is how do I remove the entire package so that there is no trace of it - then hopeefully reinstall it to work again? Is this resonable?

Xmms was installed from source and not an RPM. So the rpm uninstall won't work and even then I often find config files left over when I do RPM uninstalls for other apps.

Thanks,
