Hang on boot?

Hi, I'm pretty new to Linux, but I recently installed mandrake 10.0 from 3 bootable CDs. When I start Linux-secure I get a hang at the 'bringing up interface eth0' (worked fine the first few times I even managed to change some system settings) I have tried just restarting it a couple of times since and sometimes get a diagnostic, but all it does it restart it. I couldn't work out how to shut down the system the first couple of times (only log-off) and so ended up just having to hit the off button. I'm no expert, but this probably has something to do with it. Do I need to repair the installation, I have tried pressing 'I' for the selective startup, but this makes no difference Any help appreciated.

Since it's a new installation the easiest way to fix it would be a reinstall. Just during the install when you get to partitioning, choose format existing partition, and only format the '/' (and not /home). That way all your user setting are safed.

Last night, before I went to bed, I rebooted the machine from the command line. When I walked into the office this morning and looked at the monitor, I saw that it froze at the Boot screen and had remained like that. I did a hard restart and it booted fine. Did it freeze because I rebooted it from the command line, or should that matter? Maybe it was a fluke?
