Upgrading the Kernel

If I am installing a stock kernel from a Mandrake distribution, ie. upgrading, for example, from 3.6.7 to 3.6.15, with modules to be configured at boot, do I have to recompile the kernel for the modules to be incorporated?

Bash doesn't recognize the command modprobe. ALSA is supposed to be loading as a module at boot and it's not so I'm trying to figure out why.

Thanks in advance for the knowledge share. LD
