Guest BrianM
I've just successfully done a clean install of MDK10 on my Toshiba Satellite 4300. Have a 56k external modem connected to the 9pin serial port on the rear. Problem is I can't get the dialup to work. The only way I can connect to the net is to go to Mandrake Control Panel and create a new connection, which correctly identifies my modem on sttyS0 and connects me to the net. I've tried different configs in KPPP, including different /sttyS settings. The only response I get is from /sttyS0 which goes as far as "Initializing modem" and stops. ATI Querying produces blank lines. In the meantime, is there a command line string that I can use in lieu? your help appreciated BrianM
VeeDubb
You try to install wvdial, that works fromt he command line, but it's kind of a pain in the ass. I know this may sound like a stupid question, but are you sure you pointed kppp to ttyS0??? I can't think of a reason why kppp would fail to query an external modem. Very strange. Normaly, the only hting that would come to mind is a dead modem, but since mcc can connect you, that doesn't make any sense.

When trying to connect (KPPP), the external modem lights flash, and it initializes up to the stage of dialing, but doesn't dial. The ATI query comes up so that's why it doesn't dial. Have uninstalled and reinstalled KPPP. I think there is a graphical version of WVDial and I might have a look at that, failing everything else. This is a real head scratcher. What program does MCC use to dial up with? thanks for your suggestions BrianM
Guest BrianM
Solved it. Installed WVDial and then the graphical frontend Gnome-ppp from http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idp...k.i586.rpm.html Connected first time. WVDial picked up the modem on /dev/modem. hope anyone else with laptop problems and kppp reads this. Well done Gnome. thanks BrianM :D
DragonMage
There is some kde updates for Mandrake 10 Official, including kde-networks and kde-networks-kppp. Try installing the updates and see if the problem still persist in kppp.
