Guest rock
Hello, I have log/message file record from June 1,2004 up to now. How do I get this file from getting bigger and bigger. Thanks RK [moved from Installing Mandrake by spinynorman]
Guest anon
logrotate will handle that for you. Open up a console: man logrotate
Guest rock
Hello anon, I have been trying to figure out how one uses this command. I read the man pages but I am still in dark. Can you please give me a hint Thanks RK
somedude
A quick, dirty and very un-elegant way is to rename the logs that are too big and add a date stamp to the file name, so that you can identify them later. logrotate must be added to cron, which is a scheduler daemon. man cron or googleing 'cron' will give you some tips on how to use it. mandrake_alf
A real easy way to administer background jobs is with Webmin (http://www.webmin.com/) although learning the CLI to cron is always hightly recommended. Every install of linux no matter who the vendor was, has had logrotate running by default so maybe you disabled it by accident?? Anyway... Webmin is a really useful tool for a LOT of admin tasks so you should install it for them as well as handling background jobs. cheers.. bvc
I fix it on my desktop by not using the logs ;) no need for them on a desktop unless you're the paranoid kind.....only servers need the logs.
