Guest hipolito
Hi, i've decided to trie linux and download the first cd of mandrake 10.0 community. I couln't boot with the cd so i made a floppy for booting. everything fine, when after giving the root password and create a user, i have a message Kernel error during install. The instalation continues to the boot manager. I choose ghaphical lilo, then in next step i made a entry for windows (xp), but i coulnd do the same for linux. In the image field it was no options for choose and i don't know how to do it. The instalation continues, with success (well it seems so). Then i reboot, i have lilo with a entry to xp but i don´t have a entry for mandrake. Help (a desperate newbie)
bvc
Welcome! You're really going to want/need more than just the first cd (though it IS NOT related to the kernel error). Is there a reason you downloaded Community instead of Official? You shouldn't have had to make entries for xp and linux, the installer does that automatically. If you had to it's (just guessing) most likely because the kernel did not actually get installed so the bootloader bailed out/quite the config, and is why there is no linux entry in lilo. Did you check the md5sum on the iso? (if iso's) Have you tried the install a second time to see if you get the same errors? Guest hipolito
Thanks for the response. I think you're right. There wasn´t a correct install and so there wasn´t correct lilo. But where should be the problem? I've check the md5sums. I will download the official release. I get the community version by mistake (newbie things B) . Can you tell why are the others cd for (2 and 3)? I'm a techer and i´m trying to understand linux for use in my school. We need a operating system more robust than win98 or XP (that we have). Our kids (and some teachers too) are experts in destroying all configurations, and then the ask: why this do´'t work? I see mandrake as a possible solution. Thanks again. (You probably have notice that i'm not a englhis teacher )
digby
The other CDs have additional packages (software) on them. I don't remember exactly what is on which cd, but the kernel is on CD1, and I think that Open Office is on CD3. I had a kernel problem with my install too, and it turned out that I forgot to md5 sum my downloads. I ended up with errors on the first and third CDs.
