adsl Ethernet connection

I thought I would try again to see if I could get my adsl Ethernet modem up and working. I have tried various "tactics" on several occasions, but still no luck. I do have a little more information, though, that I hope will give someone an idea of why I'm having problems. Actually, the computer communicates with the internet, as net_monitor shows data coming and going. When I try to connect with net_monitor, it states: "Connection failed. Verify your connection in the MCC." It seems as if my server allows me to connect (and my phone bill shows that I was "connected," too), but Mandrake doesn't seem to know I have permission from my server. Knoppix works, as I am using it now.

When I try to connect, using adsl-start, in terminal, the responce is:

# adsl-start

................TIMED OUT

/usr/sbin/adsl-start: line 194: 2855 Terminated $CONNECT "$@" >/dev/null 2>&1

When I try to connect using MCC, this is the process and response I get:

1) I choose auto detection. It finds 2 connections: normal modem on port ttySO, and a LAN connection. Yes, I do have 2 modems.

2) I choose "adsl connection".

3) I choose to connect with pppoe.

4) I insert the data: DNS, username, password.

5) I choose "no" at the question, "Connect at boot?".

6) I choose "yes" at the question, "Connect to internet now?"

At this point, the lights on my modem flash, net_monitor shows data coming and going. Then the message comes up: "Your system doesn't seem to be connected to the internet."

Following are some of the configuration files I have. In Knoppix, I am able to connect without any difficulty. Therefore I have also included some information from the Knoppix configuration system. Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Kieth

It seems looks you are connected.

Don't really know but why an IP address like 10.0.0.10 ? Why not a standard class C address like 192.168.x.x ?

Also did you tried to set your eth0 as DHCP ? you may try, I've already seen it solved obscure problems.

I have tried to use dhcp before, but I thought I would try again, then give the results. In MCC, I launched the wizard. I used auto detection. It found my 2 modems. I choose "LAN connection - ethernet card(s) detected". I then choose "Automatic IP (bootp/dhcp/zeroconf). I then rebooted the system. On bootup, it could not bring up "interface eth0". It then choose eth0:9, stating, "Claiming ownership of address 127.255.255.255." Then in console, I tried to connect. Below are the results, and some more configuration files.

By the way, it just occured to me. With my first entry, I might have been connected to the internet with my regular modem when I checked #ifconfig. I can't remember now.

At this point, I went into MCC, to re-configure the adsl connection (not the LAN). I used the dhcp option, with an automatic IP. Still no luck. I then re-configured the adsl connection using pppoe, still no luck. Any ideas as to the problem?

Thanks,

Kieth

I'm not sure if this might help but I used to always get an eth0 failed everytime I booted up. It turned out to be a sinple problem. My cable modem, when turned on at the same time as my computer, would actually take longer to make the internet handshake than it took for my computer to ask for and accept an ip address from the cable modem. Therefor no address no connection. Have you tried turning on the ADSL modem a minute or so before booting the computer? Just a shot in the dark.

Some IP's and modems only accept one MAC address. So you might not be able to use a second machine untill you get a router setup. That happened to me also. Call you IP if you suspect this problem. Once I got the modem to accept my router I got all four computers hooked up fine.

Have you tried turning off the phone modem or uninstalling it when trying the ethernet card? Sometimes this causes small problems.

Just a few ideas.

Well, this is what I tried to do. I disconnected my 56K modem, (as Pzatch recommended) booted up the computer, went into MCC and reconfigured my internet connection. First I configured my LAN card, using dhcp. Then I configured my adsl connection, using again dhcp. Then I went into terminal and typed in "ifconfig", "adsl-start", "ifconfig", then after about 5 minutes, "ifconfig" again. Please note that with the first "ifconfig" command, there is no pppoe connection, but after I used the command "adsl-start", I have a pppoe connection, even if it states I do not have one! Then with konqueror, I tried to open up an internet connection, but nothing. I'm not connected. Then I typed "ifconfig" again, and guess what, no pppoe connection! It disappeared all by itself! Any ideas as to the problem?

Thanks,

Kieth

After writing all the above (on OpenOffice), I tried various other options to hook up. While in MCC (which I started in Terminal), I choose the option to try and hook up to the internet. I then saw this message:

May not be the same thing, but it looks awfull simmilar to my problem several weeks ago. You can take a look HERE

For some reason (still not real sure why), Mandrake raised up a bugger of a firewall that blocked everything in/out. I was connecting, but I got the same "computer does not appear to be connected... bla bla bla" error.

What fixed it for me - I completely turned off the firewall in MCC and verified the settings (MCC wizard). I also rebooted, but that was because of my Windows conditioning (Pavlov's dogs :D ) I don't think it was necessary.

When everything came back up, I just reset the firewall settings the way I wanted them.

Anyway, hopefully this will help.
