Just sent me an email to remind me to take down my site's frontpage, and this banner will replace the standard mandrake linux tips for free banner...

 

Software patents are really the handbrake on innovation.. not to mention the death of all small companies that cannot afford the overhead of the legalese stuff.

 

We should create a petition site where everyone can sign who actually wants software patents, with their company name and all. Then we'd know who's products to boycott, and with a small list compared to the petition against software patents it should be clear to the politicians that software patents are unwanted.

 

Problem no.1: who will benefit from software patents? Lawyers. Who is good in smooth talking, a geek or a lawyer? What do politicians need more, lawyers or geeks?

 

Am I pessimistic? :unsure:

Btw, if anyone wonders how to get a random signature from that file, here is a quick tip:

 

~$ IFS='%' SIGNATURE=($(cat patent-slogans.fortune)) && echo ${SIGNATURE[$((${RANDOM}%${#SIGNATURE[@]}))]}

 

ie, if you use mutt remember to scape the $:

set signature="IFS=% SIGNATURE=($(cat ~/patent-slogans.fortune)) && echo \${SIGNATURE[\$((\${RANDOM}%\${#SIGNATURE[@]}))]}|"

 

Ofcourse there is always a boring way, if you choose that then read "man fortune" ;)
