brancalessio
Hi! I run Mandrake Linux 9.2 Downloaded Edition on my laptop (a Acer TravelMate 261 XV). I would like to play DVDs with Mandrake. I installed the package mplayer. When I tried to play a DVD (a film for example), it told me that the DVD was encrypted and it could nor open VMG info (I still do not know what it is). I discovered the existence of libdvdcss2, downloaded it from http://www.videolan.org and installed. Actually, this is not still the solution since when I try to play a DVD it tolds me: Playing /dev/hdc libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.8 for DVD access Reading disc structure, please wait... libdvdread: Can't seek to block 256 libdvdread: Can't seek to block 256 libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO. Can't open VMG info! Up to now these are the packages on my computer: libdvdcss2, libdvdread, libdvdnav, libdvdplay and related devel packages. Also mplayer and gmplayer. What should I do to play DVDs?
VeeDubb
On my system at least, there is a symlink from /dev/hdb (that's my DVD player) called /dev/dvd Also, what program are you using, mplayer? I've never used it for DVD's. You might try xine or totem. Also, you might remove that version of dvdcss and install the one from the mandrake plf miror. brancalessio
Yes, I (would like to) use mplayer. There is not a particular reason... I simply was aware of it before then xine or totem. If your advice will work for xine, but not for mplayer I will move to xine... I'll try your way in the next days... Thanks!!!
aRTee
(g)mplayer and xine both work after installing the libdvdcss(2) from plf.
brancalessio
Really? Now, I am quite desperate... I downloaded libdvdcss and libdvdcss-devel form pfl (two files only, is the right?) and installed it using rpm -i file.rpm (am I wrong?). I found a problem with the key in the rpm, but I think this is not the problem. Mplayer still does not work. Can you tell me exactly what packages you installed? For example I installed mplayer-0.91-7.1.92mdk.i586.rpm mplayer-gui-0.91-7.1.92mdk.i586.rpm but not the preliminary version to 1.0. Is that the problem? I do not know! Should I install other rpms for pfl? Of course, neither Xine nor vlc media player do no work...
aRTee
Can you tell me what the mplayer response is? And the xine response? Have you tried with other dvds? Have you tried with a dvd that played before with mplayer (previous install, other distro, whatever)? Some discs force the drive to check the drive's hardware region setting.... I don't think that is the problem at the moment though. BTW it is libdvdcss2-1.2.8-1plf.i586.rpm that you need to have. I'm running MPlayer 1.0pre3-3.3.2, but on 9.2 I had the same as you, that is not the problem. On a side note, get your setup going for urpmi, read my site on how to do that... What you did with rpm -i is fine in this case, don't worry about that, it's just that urpmi is so much more handy...
brancalessio
In the next days I will send you all the output in the console. The only that I can say now is that: Playing /dev/hdc libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.8 for DVD access Reading disc structure, please wait... libdvdread: Can't seek to block 256 libdvdread: Can't seek to block 256 libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO. Can't open VMG info! I installed just yesterday a package named lsdvd. When I type lsdvd in a terminal the output is exactly the same: Playing /dev/hdc libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.8 for DVD access Reading disc structure, please wait... libdvdread: Can't seek to block 256 libdvdread: Can't seek to block 256 libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO. Can't open VMG info! I tried with two DVDs only, with the same results... But there is actually a news: when I mount the DVD (as iso9660 filesystem) I find two folders: audio_ts and video_ts (more or less). In the video_ts there are numerous files.vob of 1024MB. I can play them with mplayer, xine, vlc, totem or whatever you want and see them! This is my film! Of course, there is no interactive menu... What makes me so surprised is that I see the folders under Windows, but they are almost empty. So, the problem is that I cannot read the VIDEO_TS.IFO? Do you think I should use mplayer 1.0pre3-3.3.2? Another thing: my DVD region is set 2 (I live in region 2...).
aRTee
No I don't think you should imperatively use mplayer 1.0pre3-3.3.2, I used mandrake 9.2 with the included mplayer fine... It would help to have xine console output too... more info is required..

aRTee
The Linux RTC init error in ioctl doesn't need fixing, it will/should still work, this is not your problem. What is, I don't know. Honestly I'm at a loss. Anyone else??
brancalessio
I set my dvd-rom at region 2 (under Windows). What is your region? Anyway, I would not like to change my dvd region again even though 3 changes are left... Bye! :D
AussieJohn
Hello. No one has made any mention of the importance of doing the following after installing all the appropiate packages. In a Konsole as root, type in the following :- ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd please carefully note the spaces shown then press ENTER. Cheers. AussieJohn
Hello Brancalessio. Well did you finally get your DVD player to work??? If you did then please let us know and what the solution was. That is the only way we know whether any of our advice helped and which of any of the advice did the trick. If it did help then this can be helpful to others in the future. Cheers
brancalessio
I am sorry! I cannot play DVDs... :( The only thing I can do is to mount the disc as an iso9660 filesystem, the look into the video_ts folder for files .vob, then play it with mplayer, xine or whatsoever... In this way I can see the film, but no menus, language selection, subtitles are allowed... In a previous post I asked all the people the following question: what region is set you dvdrom? I know this can violate privacy... I don't know if that would be useful... I was planning to recompile the software, mplayer, libdvdcss and so on... Just to try, but now I am quite pessimist...
aRTee
My dvd is reflashed with an RPC1 firmware, so it is region free...
