Gowator
please help me, I have Compaq presario 2100, I gone and installed mandrake 10, my pcmcia card was recognised (in hardrake - > administrative of materiel). My pcmcia card is pcmcia - > 2 ports usb2. When I connect my hard disk usb external (which is as a slave) that it is recognized only one time and is mounted on SDA5, then after restarting SDA5 is missing. Moreover this external disc functions when I connect it on my ports of my laptop PC (USB1) it is recognised on startup in the utility of "configuration of materiel" (detecting new hardware - I think) ("new peripheral found: SDA5"). I don'r know how to start on mandrake (previously I had Red Hat)...; if you could m ' help I will be very grateful to you..... and I thank you in advance... PS: my usb key is not found any more on my PCMCIA. card.. sebastien: je faire la traduction tres vite ... mais si vouz peur asseyer avec le appelation c'est plus facile pour moi :D (Roland, Pierre, Ghil. Im won't be offended if you translate this one too :D)

Gowator
It sounds like the USB2 Supermount prob from aRTee, I got to shoot right now, Roland can you post the relevant parts, or aRTee ?? Gowator
http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/review100.html (en angliase) "The external USB2 harddrive can work at high speed (20MB/s) -- if I mount it by hand, instead of letting supermount do its thing, it works ok. I had the following in my /etc/fstab: /dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 /mnt/hd-sda1 vfat rw,noauto, user, exec 0 0 which I put instead of what Mandrake automatically created: none /mnt/hd supermount dev=/dev/sda1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,codepage=850,kudzu,iocharset=iso8859-15 0 0 and like this, I can mount the drive as a user with: mount /mnt/hd-sda1 and all works fine." Actually, I found out that supermount wants to enable the user to unplug the drive at basically any moment, so it continuously updates the 'atime' or access time file property. Basically, this means that each time data is read, some data gets written too, tremendously slowing down the system. I did some more tests, following a hint on the buglist, and added 'noatime' to the supermount fstab line for the external harddrive. This fixed things, but the drive would not mount automatically anymore. So one may just as well use the manual way of mounting the drive. Note that for writing to the drive, both methods are equally fast, as far as I can tell (transfer speeds between 12 and 22MB/s according to my gkrellm). Still room for improvement here. Gowator
