Can't login (upgrade skipped add user)

Mandrake10.0 didn't play well with windows (which I still need for a couple of apps). So, I reformatted my hard drive, reloaded windows and now trying to reinstall mdk9.2 which I've done several times before. However, now install keeps hanging at various stages during the process (once with 10 sec to go...). After trying install many times, I accidently chose the upgrade option instead of install and everything appeared to work fine. However, upgrade skipped the add user and setting root password steps. Since I tried/failed the install first, I don't have any users or root password.

I'm also curious why 9.2 wants to hang during install now when it used to work...anyone have any ideas? When I reformatted/reloaded windows, I only gave it 5g of 80g (I partitioned/formatted 5g as FAT32 in DOS). The rest I left unformatted for linux...does that make a difference?

Only app loaded in windows is Norton Utilities 2003...could that be a problem?

Thanks for any help...

Your CDROM could be the problem. If you have a CD-R/RW try using that instead.

I have found that this often fixes the problem with flakey installs on friends machines who are using usually cheap 52X or more cdrom drives. The burner CD drives appear to be better engineered and I suppose that is essential for high speed burning. The fact that your CDROM was OK in the past is no guarantee that it is still OK.

A simple test:- Put in a music CD in one drive and use GRIP to rip it, observe the ripping action, then do the same with the other drive. You will almost certainly see that the burner drive produces almost no errors if any.

Since an install is so critical to a stable operating system then you cannot afford read errors as it is installed.

When I burn on my 48X CD-R/RW I prefer to burn at 24 or 36X especially for compressed files e.g. rpms and tarballs etc. to ensure accurate burning for accurate reading later for this very reason.

Hope this helps.

'Upgrade' doesn't perform that part of the install since there's already suppose to be a root/users.

at the boot prompt (you may have to hit esc at the boot screen) type:

linux single

then at the prompt type

passwd

This will let you create a root password. Next you can run drakconf to do this at the prompt type

drakconf

It will let you setup users under the system section.

Thanks for the help guys. Sorry, cdrom was a typo, I have a cd/rw but I don't have the ISOs. They were burned for me...will try to get better copies this week...but they worked before I tried mdk10.0. In the mean time I'll try to set root password and configure a user tomorrow. Again, thanks for the help...
