aRTee
I was trying to help a colleague to try Mandrake 9.0 after RH7.3 didn't help him in getting dvd playback (now it seems it was just the dma that wasn't working, kt333 mobo chipset not recognized, like mdk8.2). But during the install, he got to the part where you get to test X, and the machine hangs. It does boot, but no graphics. He tried a number of things, ripping out any usb camera/printer, switching off and on the monitor, running XFdrake after install, downloading new drivers from sourceforge, booting with noapic option etcetc. All to no avail. Do people here with radeon 7500 have the same problems? Is there a simple solution for this problem? The system is a MSI mobo/kt333, athlon 1800+, radeon7500, 512MB ram. DragonMage
Do not let mandrake test the display since Radeons are not supported out of the box by the stock XFree 4.2.1 (which mandrake download edition has). You may have to go the console mode for a bit until you can get the driver from http://dri.sourceforge.net/ and install it. After that it should work ok with X. I actually have similar experience (installing mandrake 9.0 RC1 in a friend's computer with radeon 7500) and after about an hour of struggling, manage to get it running. Last time i checked, he is using linux more than windows now... in IceWM (even though he used to be a gnome fan). :)
pmpatrick
I have used my Radeon 7500 with Mandrake 9.0 on two different intel computers, one a P3 the other a P4 and had no problems with either installation. However, I have noticed posts reporting problems with the Radeon 7500. Haven't really noticed whether they were using intel or AMD chipsets but it's possible that the combination of AMD+Radeon 7500 doesn't sit well with Mandrake. aRTee
DragonMage, do you mean: download the dri from cvs (which is not a sure way to get a working system) and compile? 400MB is quite a lot, and then not being sure it will compile properly.. :( Ah well... Also, I noticed in the XFree readme's that actually radeon 7500 should be supported with mdk9 download edition, so what's up with that? In any case, I'll let you know if it works, unless this colleague chooses to stick with RH8...
DragonMage
Nope, you don't have to download the whole cvs thing.. lemme check over there.. Ok, go to http://dri.sourceforge.net/snapshots/ and download http://dri.sourceforge.net/snapshots/radeo...ux.i386.tar.bz2 uncompress it by typing bzip2 -d radeon-20021022-linux.i386.tar.bz2 then tar xvf radeon-20021022-linux.i386.tar go to the resulting directory ( dripkg ) then su to root then type ./install.sh it should install the driver then. You may need to reboot after the installation is complete.
aRTee
Ok, just forwarded the info, I'll let you know how that turned out, but I guess this should be ok. Thanks!!
aRTee
Ok, it's been some time since this colleague also tried RH8, where he has other probs (sound) and win2k (no comment), but he did try the dri-snapshot, with no success. I finally got him to mail me the xfconfig file, which looked ok to me (I can post it if you want) and the xfree logfile, which isn't clear to me at all why it aborts... Any hints? Please advice. DragonMage
You know.. since I am not an X expert, I am not sure what the problem is in there.. It's just weird to see both ati and radeon driver loaded.. maybe that's the cause of the crash? Anyway, can you post the /etc/X11/XFree86-4 file? Also check these directory /lib/modules/(kernel version)/kernel/drivers/video /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri And see if there is anything weird like the drivers not installed properly or in different color. At any rate, I just updated my friend's computer from 9.0 RC1 to 9.0 Finals and guess what.. the radeon is the only major problem. But, I solve it after one hour of tweaking around. When I left, that computer is running smoothly with 3d acceleration on and stuffs.
aRTee
Ok, see below for the file; (oh btw I just saw you mention that friends computer with the radeon on another thread... happy it works, an hours work is nice when it pays off) The dir's I will have checked later (I'll ask my friend to send me the result). # File generated by XFdrake. # ********************************************************************** # Refer to the XF86Config man page for details about the format of # this file. # ********************************************************************** Section "Files" # Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together) # By default, Mandrake 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of # the X server to render fonts. Guest rcu316
I have loaded Mandrake 3 times now, I haven't got my PCI Version of the Radeon 7000 to work yet. When it loads the hardware I go through the hardware configuration and everything is set correctly. When the Xtined loads, the screen flashes twice and then the system locks up. I have tried this NUMEROUS times. I also have on board video. I take the Radeon out and the ATI on board video works fine. This is getting very aggravating to me as I am a new Mandrake user so needless to say I am not to familiar or impressed with Mandrake yet. Pzatch
I've never had an onboard vidio card before so... Is there a way to turn off the OB vidio card in the bios? Have you tried setting up the system without the second card and then installing it and the new drivers for it? you might have to edit some config files to tell it not to load the OB vid card at all.
