standby by closing the lid

I wish to use two different "close/open lid" policies:

1. When the laptop is powered from the battery, closing lid should suspend the laptop (it does);

2. When plugged in, closing lid should put the laptop in standby - I want to be able to access the harddrive, and work via ssh. So far, closing the lid suspends the laptop, no matter what power source it's using.

How can I do this? I use apm. klaptop's suspend and standby buttons seem to work with apm on my laptop.
