bigjohn
OK, so despite that fact that the #10beta2 experiment that I tried yesterday went to a sack of sh1t, and killed both the 9.1 and gentoo 1.4 that I had installed. I figured that after re-installing 9.1, getting the updates etc I'd look into 9.2 I should point out that I normally would buy a dvd powerpack, but what ever tosser who produced the current version of mandrakestore thinks that I'm gonna be stupid enough to buy it in euro's. Well, at the moment, they can stick it up their ars8 if I can't choose the currency. The point being that it's about £10 to £12 cheaper to buy it in $US. Anyway, I've got both the bittorrent and bittorrent gui packages installed. But it doesn't matter whether I look at Bittorrent FAQ's or at the mandrakeclub site, there's nothing on actually how to use it - how stupid is that. Mandrake seem to prefer this method as it seems to preserve bandwidth, but with no instructions, they obviously think that guess work will do! Sorry, ranting a bit there. The question actually is how do I use bittorrent? the mandrakeclub login/download page says I'm allowed to download the "club special". Perhaps someone could explain this process to me. many thanks. regards John
frosterrj
well, I thought that too. The only way I could get it to do anything was to click on a link which launched bittorrent gui and started a download. I would like to know if you can use it to browse downloadable stuff as well, but it doesnt seem to be that kind of thing (not a kazaa work-alike it seems). fissy
associate btdownloadgui.py with .torrent files in your file manager, then you should be able to double click on them.

I've never actually used it myself, but I've DLed it, and my friend has it, so I know a decent amout about it. It is similar to Kazaa and other p2p clients, but works totally differently. First, you have to find a site to download a torrent file (such as the mandrake files). After that is downloaded, you open it with the bit torrent program...and I believe that runs it...but I'm not totally sure on any of that... Guest anon
Sorry, ranting a bit there. The question actually is how do I use bittorrent? If you have it properly installed, you just click on a .bittorrent file in your browser. Or, you can get the file using a console. For example, in a console go to the dir that has the bittorrent stuff, then: python btdownloadheadless.py --url http://213.232.94.77/test/pclinuxos-1.20.04.iso.torrent --saveas /home/me/Desktop/temp/bit/ The best info on bittorrent i have found is here: http://www.dessent.net/btfaq/#tracker

If you read the link i gave above, it lists the command line options, one of which is: btdownloadheadless.py --max_upload_rate X Where X is your max upload. Don't put kb/s just put say, 10 or 20 whatever.
colnago
bittorrent is a bit different than most p2p clients. There is not really a search, and the easiest way to use it is on the command line. You can also get one of a multitude of clients that suits your prefs. If you have the base installed, you can download on the command line: btdownloadcurses.py file_to_download.torrent -or- btdownloadgui.py file_to_download.torrent It requires wxPython installed for the gui option. You have to put an entry in /etc/mailcap by hand if you want to be able to download via clicks in a browser, here is mine: application/x-bittorrent; /usr/bin/btdownloadgui.py %s; test=test -n "$DISPLAY" Make sure the btdownloadgui.py is there. It is not in the base, but you said you installed the gui also. Usually, you get the torrent files from the site where you want to get software from (ex. mandrake 10 beta 2 torrents from the club). There are a bunch of sites that list current torrents, but these tend to move around a bit because they are targeted by the record and movie dudes. Sometimes they take out a tracker hosting legitimate stuff because they think that some peer is sharing a movie or song of theirs. If you have not finished the d/l you are screwed, since you need the tracker to find the peers with the d/l. This has happened to me a few times and it is really anoying (the site will say that they are down them because of a letter from the monopoly groups). The mandrake ones are ok, they use their own tracker I am sure. Here are some non-official clients: http://azureus.sourceforge.net http://ei.kefro.st/projects/btclient/ http://home.elp.rr.com/tur/download.html
chris-tux
Anon, I read the command lines concerning btdownloadgui, and already tested btdownloadgui.py --max_uploads 12 /home/chris/tmp/mytorrent-chris.torrent then I got error: Too many args - 0 maxrun with no args for parameter explanations when you run btdownloadgui.py you get a nice explanation arguments are ---max_uploads <arg> the maximum number of uploads to allow at once (default to 4) ... I still don't understand why it doesn"t accept my command line
Guest anon
I don't use the GUI, but im guessing its the same command as the console: you typed : btdownloadgui.py --max_uploads 12 It should be: btdownloadgui.py --max_upload_rate
chris-tux
hoops, you should read --max_upload_rate rather than --max_uploads; but the result is the same! Question is: does btdownloadgui accept --max_upload_rate ? I am not so sure now
Guest anon
Well try it out, it will either work or it won't. Whats the full code your entering anyway? like where is the torrent file?
chris-tux
sorry, I give you all the info now :P . I want to dl MandrakeMove from MandrakeClub. If I follow the link https://www.mandrakeclub.com/torrent.php?f_=MandrakeMove-i586.iso.torrent It downloads the file /home/chris/tmp/mytorrent-chris.torrent then the gui asks for a place to save the file and everything is going rather nice except that the upload rate is too high ! It is the reason why I wanted to set a max upload rate. So I tried with btdownloadgui --max_upload_rate first then btdownloadheadless.py --max_upload_rate 12 /home/chris/tmp/mytorrent-chris.torrent It didn't work (see the errors above). So as I don't know well bt, I wondered if I had to enter the link from Mandrake club link. I tried btdownloadheadless.py --max_upload_rate 12 --url https://www.mandrakeclub.com/torrent.php?f_=MandrakeMove-i586.iso.torrent I didn't feel very confident with this command line :o It didn't work either ! Here am I now
Guest anon
It won't work because the club is looking for a user name/password etc. I just tried it myself. You need to get it from a public site if you want to use options like max_upload_rate. Did a quick search and found http://www.rpmfind.net/BitTorrent/ has mandrakemove but the tracker is down at the moment. Maybe look elsewhere? yes, i know, its a pain in the butt. I will put it up on our own server soon if the tracker im running works OK. Im testing it out with Texstars own ISO at the moment.
