MDK 9.2 IceWM fails to start for users

Hi,

I am an experienced MDK and general Linux user.. just installed MDK 9.2 on IBM Thinkpad 770 for use as web devel platform.

I installed KDE, G.N.O.M.E , IceWM, and Fluxbox and have configured MDK to enable graphical boot and run the dm service at runlevel 5 as is normally the default...

All WMs are accessible to all users, except IceWM fails to start for non-privileged users, i.e. not root. I have tried MDDKDM and KDM, same issue using either display manager. Currently using KDM.

The progression of events is this:

  • 1. dm launches XFree86 4.3 and shows the display manager login.

  • 2. I login as a normal user and choose IceWM as the session to start.

  • 3. The display manager disappears, but the background does not change.

  • 4. The X cursor turns to a busy cursor after a period of a few seconds.

  • 5. X apparently crashes and restarts, bringing up the display manager again.

After this I switched to tty1 (vt 1) and logged in as root.

I have looked at all of the relevant logs in /var/logs:

XFree86.0.log:

. . . showed nothing but successful startup messages.

kdm.log:

. . . reported only that it caught signal 11.

messages and syslog:

. . . reported only that kdm output: Server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly.

I saw nothing in here that helped, so I checked my user's .xsession-errors file:

icewm-session:  using /home/kodeman/.icewm for private configuration files
     icewm-session:  wm_pid: 1798
icewmbg:   using /home/kodeman/.icewm for private configuration files
IceWM:  using /home/kodeman/.icewm for private configuration files
icewmtray:   using /home/kodeman/.icewm for private configuration files
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

I have checked the permissions of the IceWM executables and they all allow o+rx.

I am at a loss.

This is a fresh install of MDK, using the included RPM packages for IceWM in their default configurations.

I used rpmdrake to install them, so all dependencies appear to be installed.

I have not used any security or errata updates yet, as those having thus far been listed seem to be irrelevant to the problem.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance.
