Recompiling kernel from 2.4.18 to 2.4.24

Recommended Posts

I have Mandrake Linux 8.2 installed on one of my hdd partitions.

I recompiled the kernel to upgrade it from 2.4.18 to 2.4.24 strictly as stated in Mandrake Ref manual. (I tried before to upgrade patch by patch i.e. from 2.4.19 to 2.4.24 however it warned me that some files eg 2.4.18/COPYRIGHT and 2.4.19/COPYRIGHT conflicted, what may be the reason?)

.

I used make oldconfig so that it asks me only for NEW modules etc and I recompiled and installed the beast without any error or warning.

When I rebooted my machine it opened with 2.4.24 kernel but did not recognized my ethernet card with module 8139too and I could not install it with insmod, stating that this module is not in the modules list. Furthermore, auto-mount property for CD-Rom devices does not exist anymore...

Where did I make error? Does not 'make oldconfig' not prevent such errors?

N.B: I recompiled the kernel from source code, extracting to /usr/src and making symbolic link linux to linux2.4.24 and renaming old as linux.old, as stated in a/m manual...

.

your help would be very appreciated...

Best regards,

Cengizhan
