I use one hillwalking, dead handy in mist, but I have met people using these things who have come up to me to ask where they are on the map. if you can't understand the grid reference they are worse then useless. Same in the car, I suspect. if you don't understand the orientation and you can't use a map in the first place you're stuffed. Hillwallking is like life, The guy with the map, the compass and the loud opinion does not necessarily know what he is doing. learn to use them yourself.
