1. I was also going to suggest updating / installing the latest SDL libs.

If you're using KDE, try disabling the KDE sound server (it's in the KDE control panel, sorry - not at my box now and can't remember what it's called).

Thanks all! I tried

artsdsp /mnt/nwn/nwn/nwn

and voila!!! sound!!!

Yes, I had to disable Config your Desktop/Sound/Sound system in 2005LE, but that made no difference here in 2006.0.3

Now can someone explain to me "why"? (Never used artsdsp!)

tia!!!

2. I used realplayer 10 gold from their website, and it worked OK for me.  Although I did install mplayer-plugins as well for use in Firefox afterwards, but I had tested realplayer beforehand and it worked OK.

Not sure if you have used the same realplayer as myself, but assume you did.  The only other thing I have installed is xine-win32 codecs, but this was installed before the realplayer stuff I think.

Yep, RP 10 Gold. RP codecs. I just installed mplayer and plugin, but no change. I'll go test it under 2005LE. It may be a 2006.0.3 prob.

3. Still sounds like an audio problem. What happens if you play it through arts: artsdsp realplay (and past the vid link in the realplayer app).

Love your frenetic penguins! :cheesy:

I tried

artsdsp realplay http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4218146.stm#

if that's what you meant, but I get "the player does not have the capabilities to play back this content. I think their pointer/links are not simple and can only be played by linking on it. It's at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4218146.stm# and click on the "video" button on the right.

Kristi

EDIT: if I could find where it automatically executes realplay when I click on that video button, then I could put artsdsp in front of it.........

4. This is the first time I have tried to play NWN on 2006.0.3 beta

The game plays but with no sound.

If I start it in a console, I get

SDL: Audio timeout - buggy audio driver? (disabled)
audio: Bad file descriptor

Any ideas?

Audio works fine with everything else (xine, tvtime, system, etc.)

Audio is on mobo (NForce2)

Works under 2005LE (just checked)

tia!!

5. running 2006.0.3

Use firefox 1.06

Want to play BBC video clips.

Installed RP 10 as bin.

Restarted FF but when I click on the BBC video icon, it flashes appropriately and brings up RP, but then it seems to cache the clip, in short segments, and then jumps immediately to caching the next short segment, through the clip, then stops, but never actually plays it. Clicking play causes it to go through it's "caching" dance again. No beef.

I have no prob with xine, or other sounds or video or TVTIME.

I did install RP codecs. I also installed RP rpm, but no difference.

System is described in sig. Audio is onboard NForce2.

Thoughts?

tia!!!

6. In http://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=16300

Yes, per Frederik Himpe (thanks for the link!!!) per bugs.kde.org 111408. it is caused by items checked in (right click on)toolbar / configure Panel / menus / Optional menus .  From my brief testing, "Find" works fine, but "Terminal Sessions" will cause the Kicker to crash.  I did not check the others.  This is an easy workaround until KDE gets it into a release or patch.

7. Put here because it relates to cooker.

I closed out 17486 as a dup of 16300 and added a vote to 16300.

PLEASE! if you are having this prob, and I think most beta testers are, go to

http://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=16300

log in, and VOTE for this bug so WarLy will know to look at it.

Prob occurrs in club KDE3.4, 2006.0.2, 2006.0.3beta, and probably all the others containing KDE3.4.x . I am 32bit. Don't know if this extends to 64bit.

8. I noticed with 2006.0.2 that my partition usage was up to 4.something GB. Now, early on in 2006.0.3 it's at 3.8GB But the way konqueror works it gives me the same amount of space used and free (the information for the whole partition) regardless of which folder I click on, so I can't find which folder has all that stuff! I think this was true in 2005LE, so I didn't post this as installing beta. Any way to find out just where all the stuff is?

tia!

Kristi

EDIT: scratch that. Yes it does.

9. Putting this on the forum for all...

<snip>  regarding your question about using 10.1 vs 10.2 is there an easy way to upgrade? is it as simple as going to the software manager and updating everything or is it a tad more involved than that?

No, you cannot upgrade... What I do is to copy my user(s) stuff to another partition, and install the new release on top of it, formatting the / partition but not the /root partition.

Actually, that is slightly a lie - I have one /root partition, and two / partitions (and one swap partition). One of the / partitions has 2005LE on it. The other / partition (both about 6 gig) has a 2006 beta on it. To get the multiboot Linux requires that you "configure" the boot (near the end of the install). See thread:

http://forum.mandrivaclub.com/viewtopic.php?t=38738

RJ49's post near the end of this thread shows you how. I printed it off, and then did the install. It makes sense when you are doing it.

Then when I want to "upgrade" 2006 (try a different beta) I copy the user(s) stuff to another partition (to back it up), install, formatting the old 2006, and doing the boot configure near the end. Then I boot into the new 2006 and using a root konqueror (kedsu konqueror) I copy the user stuff from the other partition to the new user partition. I copy all the UN-hidden files/folders. The only HIDDEN files/folders I copy are .Azureus, .mozilla, and .thunderbird. You can hose your new release with the wrong residuals! When you do this copy back to the user, everything is permissioned "root". Do

execute each line individually
cd $HOME
su (enter root password)
cd ..      <---   MEANS ".."
find kristi -exec chown kristi.kristi '{}' ';'
find kristi -exec chmod go-rwx '{}' ';'

to get the permissions back to your user name (substitute your user name for kristi).

Be sure that you know the HD addy of the two / partitions and which is which - screwing that up in the configure boot area can yield a totally useless pile of hardware, though sometimes a restore (boot from CD and hit F1 and follow instructions) will get one of them back. You can then mickeymouse with /etc/lilo.conf to get the other one. Maybe.

In any case, copy your user stuff to another partition!

This really IS far easier than an XP install!!!!!

10. any thoughts? Before I could see packages that were already listed from the install but when I told it to install, for instance the kernel source, it tried to make me load the DVD into my CD drive which obviously cant read DVD's. Something has been screwy from the install which I did a few hours ago and have changed nothing except the resolution lol. Any thoughts?

Hi and welcome.

a.) I never tried it with 10.1

b.) I notice some of your messages have "10.2" in them. redo your easyurpmi by first going to MCC , software management, "select from where software packages are downloaded..." and removing all lines except your CDs and/or DVDs . Then go to easyurpmi and manke sure you have selected either 10.1 official or community, click on the "proceed to step 2" button, look at the result to make sure there's no 10.2 stuff in there. Copy that to a root terminal and let it run. Don't forget to press return again for the last one. Then try again.

Is there any reason why you're not using 10.2 aka 2005LE ?

11. Uh Oh, I guess I'm a gggggeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkk!

:cheesy:

I hear your point, but I'm not doing it to try to save time, just to get rid of it, since I know whether it's up or not by the position of my screen - with Nvidia, it's 1/4' to the right. I adjust for this on the monitor, so it looks normal if the Nvidia driver is active, but 1/4' to the left if it's not. It's rather obvious.

:P

12. xorg.conf for my Nvidia GeF4Ti4200 (running 7667)

Option "NoLogo" something?

I have seen -blank-, "0", "1", "false", "true" in the "something" position.

I am guessing that -blank- = "1" = "true" which will cause the logo to NOT be displayed.

Yes?

tia!

Kristi (limping along with 2006.0.2) :mr-green:

13. I did a default install, only selecting "network client". But, I do allow lisa to run. When I used to compile kde, it required lisa as a depend.

:banana::banana::banana:

Allowing Lisa did the trick!!!!! Now I wonder why that would be needed during install?

THANKS!!!

Kristi

==> solved - 0.1.3 install fails to install KDE base modules if lisa is not allowed in install. Heads up dev team!

Also clock date and time format does not work.

14. I installed the beta, no issues with kde. Might be fixed already, although it has the same number as the one you used.

ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/distr/Linux/Man...so/2006.0/i586/

I found it at ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Man...so/2006.0/i586/ which is a little different from what you gave me.

The md5sum file is the same as the one I used, so I think it is safe to say that the iso's are identical - must be something else. I found that it was simply not installing the KDEbase stuff - once I did that, I was offered KDE in the login menu.

So I am guessing that you are selecting different things than I am. I think the only additional thing I am selecting on the left is "network client". I check nothing for servers, and I check KDE and Gnome. I also tell it not to use "lisa" since I think that is only for remote security or some such - NETBIOS.

Wondering what you select...

tia!!!

15. kristi, I use ftp.nluug.nl for all my downloads because they never have thru-put issues and always mirror up quickly, even if they are not listed. I get better service from there than I do from servers in Illinois or Indiana!! Go figure.

I am loading the beta now. Maybe I can help.

Can you tell me where in ftp.nluug.nl I would find the betas - missed it!

Thanks.

I wonder, though about d/l probs as the md5 check sum matched perfectly both times.
