  1. You could log in completely as root, but I wouldn't do that, quite dangerous. There's an easier way though, at least with KDE: right-click on desktop, choose Link to Application, in the Application tab, choose command and enter "kdesu konqueror". Then choose an icon that tells you not to touch it lightly :). It'll create a root instance of konqueror where you can delete anything you wish. Be careful!

  2. Distro is Debian Sarge. Installed mplayer from the marillat repository fine and it works great. The issue is with mplayer plugin. I used alien to convert an FC3 (4? don't remember) for the plugin and copied it to ~/.mozilla/plugins. If I delete my xpti.dat and pluginreg.dat it plays fine, but if I restart firefox it doesn't play again till I delete those files once again, however, about:plugins lists them. I have checked and the permissions seem okay (all are owned by my user and are executable). So, two questions: 1. Any ideas on fixing this, or 2. Any better place to get mplayer from so it will work better?

P.S. This is a reinstall, it worked fine before, but I may have used a different package to alien-convert. Thanks!

  3. I just did something pretty cool the other day. I've always wondered that even though I no longer use Windows, I use the Windows key all the time to access the K Menu. I had a thought... how about a Tux key! Obviously it would be great if they'd manufacture keyboards with them :P but since that's not gonna happen anytime soon I made my own, printed them out (highest-quality since it's low-res) and taped them over my Windows keys! It works great. I don't have a digital camera to give you a screenshot, but I attached the image I used if you want to try it.

  4. Many time you use neither. Almost always (at least for me), the package I need is in urpmi. Go to the easy-urpmi link at the top of the site to set it up (you'll need the internet though.

Go to the Mandrake Control Center (Kmenu->System->Configure your computer I believe), and go into the network section, there you can select a driver to use. There's a good chance Mandrake already has a driver for your particular hardware.

  5. As you might have read, I had to reinstall, and this time, I can't play DVDs with ogle, and I'm guessing I didn't install something I need. I have libdvdcss2, libdvdread, libdvdnav, libdvdplay, all the ogle requirements, also ogle-mmx (Debian Sarge remember).

Anyway, when playing dvds (encrypted, haven't yet tried with unencrypted ones), I get the following output:

libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.8 for DVD access

libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.8 for DVD access

    No accelerated IMDCT transform found

    ctrl: ipc_rmid: Invalid argument

What is an IMDCT transform and what am I missing? Also, the last time I tried (before I turned off my computer and maybe changed a few packages), I got sound but no video. Mplayer works playing videos (but not DVDs). DMA is turned on, and this happens as root or normal user.

What am I missing? Thanks all.

UPDATE: Dvds work great with Kaffeine. I guess I can just use that for the moment, but I'd love to know why it won't work with ogle.

  6. Ok, so here' s my problem. Recently I switched to Debian from Mandrake (I have nothing against Mandrake lol, just wanted to try another distro). Anway, I'm running out of space on my Debian partition, so I deleted my Mandrake partition to give me more room for Debian. The df command now gives this output: In order, it goes Windows (sda1), swap (sda5), Debian (sda6).

Filesystem           1K-blocks      Used Available Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda6             15741824  14059444   1362568  92% /
    tmpfs                   257508         0    257508   0% /dev/shm
    /dev/sda1             20514968  16808852   3706116  82% /mnt/windows

Since the Debian partition starts AFTER the free space, when I attempt to resize it with Mandrake CD 1, it won't let me resize. So the question is, how can I make the Debian partition (sda6) start at a different sector so it can resize? Thanks.
