  1. Well, XP is installed and running good. When I set it up I had it partition the hard drive into two 120 GB partitions. After taking care of XP I put the MDV 2007 DVD into the DVD drive and it comes up to the screen for installing and I press enter and I get a blank screen and nothing happens. The DVD drive is idle. I rebooted a couple times and also checked the BIOS and also, I have a copy of KUBUNTU 64 bit and it does nothing after I press install, except you get a screen with the KUBUNTU logo. Actually the last thing I see for MDV2007 is "Installing Linux Kernel". Then it goes blank and the DVD drive stops spinning. What the heck is wrong?? The reason for the edit is because just for the heck of it I took my MDV 2006 PP and put it in and booted the computer and it was willing to install MDV 2006 PP, but when I got to the Agreement part I just refused to get out of it. So, should I install MDV 2006 and then install MDV 2007 as an upgrade? I do know that this 2007 DVD works as I installed it on a smalll hard drive the day I got it from Mandriva. If it helps, the video card is an MSI/ATI 256 MB PCI-Express. Pepse.
  2. OK, before I go any farther I will acquire a standard XP disc. All I have is the 64bit. I will get back ASAP and we will go from there. Do I need XP PRO or will XP Home work? Pepse.
  3. First to say..... the motherboard is a Gigabyte 64 bit with an AMD 4200+ X2 AM2 chip and 2 GB of RAM and a 250GB SATA hard drive; so that is why I gotta use the XP 64bit OS. This might seem a dumb question, but for partitioning the XP, I install it first and then partition it?? I haven't partitioned a windows hard drive in years; win98 to be right, and just don't remember how I did it. I mean about 2 years later I switched to Linux and haven't had to worry about partitioning. Later. Pepse.
  4. OK, what this amounts to is that I picked up a well equipped tower for a friend. But without any operating system(s). Anyway I mentioned to a tech there that this is going to be a dual boot system. He said to find out which OS to install first. This will be a Windows XP PRO x64 system with Mandriva 2007 Spring? edition (I should have the DVD Wed. or Thurs.). Now, whether it matters or not this computer needs to boot to XP first because my friends girl friend has no clue about Linux, and my friend has little knowledge. If it matters this computer has a SATA hard drive. Later. Pepse.
  5. OK, I am happy with the help from everybody. The situation is SOLVED. How do I put that in the header. Stay tuned for a similar topic so read it and don't be confused with this one. Pepse.
  6. :D Okay, I finally figured it out. I slaved the win98 hard drive and then did the Mandriva update so that Mandriva would see that I had the win98 hard drive in there. Okay then I booted to the win98 hardrive (thru GRUB) and it took about 20 minutes for it to finally load. I figure that because windows was put as a secondary drive it had to recalibrate itself. NOW, the big question is.... am I going to be able to do the same with the Windows XP hard drive slaved to a Linux hard drive. Is XP going to have a bigger hassle than win98 of accepting the slave role? Later. Pepse.
  7. Okay, just for practice I took an old hard drive and put Mandriva '06 on it and then I had an old hard drive with win98 and hooked them up with Linux as primary and win98 as slave, then booted the system and went to MCC and then to Boot and then "how system boots" then set GRUB with graphical menu as the bootloader to use. Then shut down and started the system. Well, there is no reference to windows, and there is nothing anywhere to say that the windows hard drive is there, except that BIOS does know that there are 2 hard drives. What did I miss?? Pepse.
  8. So, as I seem to understand this all I gotta do is take my XP hard drive and set the jumper for "slave", hook it up, then put my Mandriva 2006 DVD in and change the bootloader through GRUB? It sounds too easy. Serious. When I get to the Post Install area I should be able to understand what it is telling me as to changing the Bootloader so that it sees the XP hard drive and that after all is said and done I can reboot the computer and I will be given a choice as to what HDD to boot? And another thing right now my Bootloader would be whatever the default is when installing Mandriva. And of course I don't need GAG47 or System Commander? To some of you I might seem kinda dense but I write my stuff so that the replies "hopefully" are easy for me to understand. I might repeat myself in a different way but I try to write it so the replies are easy to understand. Later. Pepse.
  9. OK, I am back with a few questions about this situation. First of all webframe site does not work. Second I downloaded the GAG47 zip file onto a floppy. So, I am ready to try this. I have learned that windows has to be my master and Linux has to be my slave drive. I was told that I have to change my LILO/GRUB so that it understands that Linux will be on a slave. Is there some kind of tutorial for doing this whole shebang? How to set up GAG47 and how to change the bootloader/? If not would someone have the time to tell me? If so you can send me an email or post here. Later. Pepse.
  10. No, I haven't done any updates yet. So, when I get home tonight I will at least get the Xorg update. I have dial-up and things are a bit slow, but I will go for it. I will post after the update, whether it works or I still have a problem. Later. Pepse.
  11. I am not positive this is a software problem but here goes. I am running Mandriva 2006 Power Pack. About 3 weeks ago I downloaded a game, Powermanga. Well I started having video lockup problems after the 3rd time I played it. The game would slow down and freeze. I posted here but never got a good answer except to try going to the game through a Konsole instead of the "link to" icon I put on the KDE desktop. I got no errors playing it that way. Worked great until this morning, then it started slowing down but, I was able to exit the game. I went online and things are bad there too. Pages load very slow. So, I went to Gnome to see if it would be different. Nope, same thing. So I went back to KDE and went to a konsole and brought up GLXGEARS. It was running good, bad, good, bad; and the FPS would start out good, then drop in half then speed back up, then drop back down, and so on, and so on. Well, I shut down and went to work, came home and fired up the computer, and went to GLXGEARS and it is terrible. Like 5 frames in 5 sec, then 4 frames in 6.1 seconds, and so on. I didn't have any problems like this with Mandriva 2005 Power pack. I have an nVidia chipped 256 meg video card, 512 megs of DDR 400 FSB ram, a 1.3 Ghz AMD CPU. The only thing I changed in the last month is the upgrade to MDRV 2006. I am posting this through my win xp hard drive and I am not sure if the problem exists here because I don't know what tools are available to check the video performance in windows. Later Pepse.
  12. First of all I was going to download Flash from Adobe but it stated that I already have Flash, but I could've wrote over it and didn't. And, I typed "about:plugins" in the url bar and it shows: MIME type x , Description: All types , Suffixs x , Enabled: YES. Later. Pepse.
  13. For some reason my post from yesterday didn't work. Anyway I went to a Konsole and Powermanga works great. So, it seems that maybe there is a flaw in KDE 3.4?? I'm just guessing. I will check it out through Gnome and see what happens there, that is to use the Gnome GUI. The version I downloaded is the exact same one, even though I went through PBone that it the mirror I used. Later. Pepse.
  14. Okay, I go to "edit" - "preferences" - "advanced" - "scripts and plug-ins" and the box is checked for "enable plug-ins for mail and newsgroups" and of course the boxes are checked for Javascript. But in edit-preferences-navigator the is a piece called "helper applications" and when viewing it it shows a box that is empty and that box is for file types (above the box it states: Specify how to handle files of each file type), and next to the box it has "New Type". So I click on "New Type" and the next page has "mime type", "description" and "extension" and below that it has "When a file of this type is encountered (1) open it using the default application (the box is checked) (2) Open it with ..........? (3) Save it to disk. If you are not sure what I should do here do you think I should remove Fire Fox and hope that Mandriva will consider Mozilla as what needs flash? Later. Pepse.
  15. I am running Mandriva 2006 PowerPack, and flash will not work, but as I mention it works fine in Firefox, whatever version is in Mandriva 2006 PP. I looked at the Preferences for Mozilla and I am sure everything is OK. Any ideas? Pepse.
  16. Okay, being that I really like Powermanga from when I had Mandriva LE '05 I noticed it isn't in the Mandriva '06 so I downloaded the RPM for it for Mandriva '06 from RPMPBONE.net. I tried to play it and it just starts to slow down and then locks up. Anybody else have this problem?? I did a search and nothing came up. My Mandriva '06 is the PowerPack DVD. Unless you need details of my hardware I will say that besides Mandriva '06 PP I made no other changes to my computer vs. Mandriva '05 PP. Also, I copied the Powermanga RPM from my Mandriva '05 and had the same problem, except I was able to play it about 4 times before it started to lock up. Later. Pepse.
  17. Okay, finally I got the right command. I thank you very much. I did use that command, but with other stuff in front of it. Now just to make myself clearer I installed Mozilla 1.7.13 NOT Firefox. I am, and soon to be WAS, using Firefox. I don't like the seperate connection for Firefox and Thunderbird. I like to access my email on one page not 2. On my whine-doze hdd I have Netscape 7.2. When assisting friends and associates that are smart enough to abandon Internet Exploder I install either Netscape or Mozilla. Also, this copy of Firefox that came with Mandriva 2006 is buggy as per the security update page. So, instead of upgrading the Firefox I decided to go back to Mozilla for the ease of browser and mailbox on the same page. Thank you and good evening. Pepse.
  18. Nope. But, before I continue I have Mandriva 2006 Powerpack and of course KDE 3.4. That said I will say this: I right click on the desktop then "create new".....Link to application. Then on the main page I get my Mozilla icon and then (michaelc) in the rectangle box next to the icon I put Firefox? I downloaded Mozilla 1.7.13. Anyway, I then goto the Application page and in the first box (Description) I put in ????, then I skip "Comment"??, then I put what? in the Command box?? Do I put anything in the Workpath?? Do I need to do anything about the "Supported File Types?? And what about the "Advanced" page?? I hope this is a better description of my situation. Later. Pepse.
  19. "Complete the details" is my problem. On the "Application" part I put Mozilla, then on the "Description" I have tried numerous supposed ways to link it but nothing seems to work. I can get to Mozilla through a Konsole, but that is all. Later. Pepse.
  20. NO, I could not find any answers to this doinga search. Just for doing it in Gnome. Okay, so I downloaded
  21. AussieJohn, my preference has been to stay away from a dual boot hard drive. Ever since I started with Linux over 5 years ago I decided then that I did not want a dual boot hard drive. I did a fair amount of reading back then before I embarked on Linux , and still see it occasionally, wherein people seem to have hassles with dual boot systems. That is why I have stayed with 2 hard drives. Yeah it's a bit of a hassle but to me it is better than some of the hassles that come up with dual boot systems. In fact until recently my usage of windows was minimal. But since I have a hard drive with xp and my mobo and such are faster than my wife's, she tends to use mine more than hers. Hers is a an older win 98 se HP setup. And as I've said it would be nice to be able to just hook up both hard drives and choose an OS at boot. Also, hopefully it will be easy enough for my wife to understand. True my only needs for windows is for my Mercury Mystaque service and repair manual and a fair knowledge of xp for when her kids mess up there computers, and also, some people at work :D . So, I will be looking in to YinYetis link to "webframe". Later. Pepse.
  22. I see that the way I posted has some confusion. But, the Yin Yeti is answering me correctly. Yes, 2 hard drives, 1 with Linux, and 1 with windows. So, I will work with his number 1 and 2 answers. That is what I am trying to do. I have to head out to work now but if I feel I need more info I will post either tonite or tomorrow. I feel I have a grasp one what is said to do that, but if not I'll be back. Pepse.
  23. Near as I can tell this is the right spot to ask this. What it is is that I have 1 tower and 2 hard drives. I don't have the room to set up 2 computers, so is there a way to be able to boot to each hard drive without having to do what I've been doing for the last 5 years, which is shutting down the computer and unhooking the Linux hard drive and hooking up the windows hard drive. And then vice versa. Pepse.
  24. Here is what comes up for my /usr/src : linux@ linux-2.6.11-12mdk/ nvidia-7174/ RPM/ . As for your mention of compressed option I don't recall anything about it but I will look into it later. Since I have the tarballs in my system I will deal with them unless it is thought that they might be bad. Pepse.
  25. In order to get URPMI I need to go through a long process of sorta registering with EASYURPMI; you know where you pick the mirrors and put in a particular code. I still have dial-up and I started to do that stuff about 5 or 6 months ago and just gave up as I got disconnected from my ISP; common problem with dial-up. So up until recently I didn't deal with downloading anything, because RPM's are better/faster but do to the hassle of getting EASYURPMI I didn't do anything. But now that I got a DVD burner I decided to see what I can do. I was lucky to get the RPM for libdvdcss, I think through Sourceforge or Freshmeat. But verything else I needed are tarballs. I gotta go to sleep, it is 3:20 AM. I'll check this, hopefully, before I go to work today (before 2:00 PM. Pepse.
