I have some MAJOR problems right now. I dont even care about dualboot anymore, I just want/need windows back. Ive tried fixmbr and fixboot, followed by a winxp format and install, but as soon as the DOS part of the winxp installation is over, I get "error booting operating system" and I cant go ANYWHERE. Ive tried several times to format...I dont know what to do anymore... What I do know is that Yoper seems to be able to write LILO to the bootsector because I can still install that, which Il probably do later on...but I NEED windows back, no matter what PLZ this is quite serious! :o :unsure:

Another strange thing is that I put in a cd with some mp3's in the drive but I couldnt find them in the cd drive in linux. (and I cant get amsn to work lol =/) THanks, Il have a go at their forums. :( well this morning I got a little anxious and wanted to try out "yoper" linux. I really like it but Ive had some problems...I cant get back to windows...even though its in the menu.. so I restored MBR but still...and I reinstalled windows, and still....and formatted and STILL couldnt get to windows... Then I was left with nothing, and windows wouldn't go on at all.. so now I reinstalled Yoper, but I want to get windows back, even if its in spite of yoper... Can any of you help me with that? Do I have to make a new thread for it? :( :( :( all my windows stuff is lost now =/

thanks :) Well last time I installed it Im pretty sure I did all the right things during setup, but I think I must have screwed up later with the wizard, cuz first I chose cable, tht didnt work, so I tried DSL and in the end LAN...but u said that can cause problems...so I hope thats it. EDIT: I formatted and reinstalled mandrake, following your guidelines...but still I cant get it to work on the internet. I feel perhaps its better to just try another distro... is there another distro which is easy to set up like mandrake?

thanks :) I have all 3 install disks with me, yes so I just boot up from disc 1 and install over the current one? or do I have to remove it first? (Im still a massiv noob) (and I dont relly have any data in linux, since I havent gotten the internet to work and all, just some configurations but thats very little)

yeh :) Well Ive been relly happy with all the help so far, but this whole thing is just making me think whether mandrake is for me or not...I mean, if I cant get the internet to work then for me its worthless... I just took mandrake because I heard and AFAIK its the easiest to install, specially since Im doing dualboot... or do u guys have any recommendations?

thanks. BTW, kmc77 said can I do that if it doesn't work? and how? Anyway, one thing at a time :D EDIT: okay, I tried doing all the stuff mentioned and it still does not work. Then I tried to install 'pump' and that was okay, but I couldn't find 'dnsmasq' in the list. And it still doesnt work.... Any other ideas? WHat about the install disk thing?

okay, I did all of that. When I tried: route add default gw 192,168.9.1 eth0 it said "file exists"; I assume because we already did that before. Then when I did route I got: Destination Gateway Genmask 192.168.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 default 192.168.0.1 0.0.0.0 (I just manually typed that here lol. There are also some things listed like "flag"but I dontknow if that is important) When I tried to ping that IP address I get the same error as when I try to ping the router or other computers on my home network .... host unreachable (something like that.)

okay, (Im now just on my moms computer cuz its way annoying to reboot everytime...) anyway, after I tried all the things u mentioned, it still didn't work. So I tried the ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.4 route add default gw 192.168.0.1 eth0 after I did that in the tray an icon said the network was connected and if I typed 'route' it would list some things...but my internet still doesn't work... :( Also, when u told me to do: ifdown eth0 ifup eth0 it said: determining IP info eth0......."failed" (with a long pause inbetween) Another thing, when shutting down the 'shorewall'thing, it said: WARNING: Disable_IPV6=yes in shorewall.conf but this system does not appear to have ip6 tables. BTW: After I chose Lan - DHCP in the add connection wizard, it said "assign DHCP host name?"and I left the button selected (ticked) but I left the field blank... also in the next window it asks to make a hostname and I left it blank... and I didnt fill in a "zeroconf hostname"either.... is that okay? because I relly wouldnt know what to fill in BTW: I can now ping myself but not any other machines (it says host unreachable)

the "grep DHCP" still didn't do anything... :( the IP address of my computer is still 192.168.0.4 according to the ifconfig eth0 (which makes sense because thats what I have in windows aswell) Okay, Im gonna try and see if I can print all that out in knoppix now EDIT: when choosing LAN as connection, should I just take "DHCP" again?

Okay, I ran the "netcardconfig" and chose DHCP, and my internet still works... hehe, magic network booting :D

Here is the route thing: root@ttyp0[knoppix]# route Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 192.168.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 default 192.168.0.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0 and yes, 192.168.0.1 takes me to my router configuration "page" then I went using the console to etc/network (that was the only net* directory) but when I type "grep DHCP" it skips down a line but doesn't spit out any text or information (and any commands I try to enter after that are not executed) (btw thanks a lot so far :) )

Edit: No, knoppix did it all for me, I didnt have to choose anything; I just let it boot up and then it was all working fine I didnt use the command tool but browsed to the folder, is that okay aswell? here is what I got for teh first one: # /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(8), ifdown(8) # The loopback interface # automatically added when upgrading auto lo iface lo inet loopback and teh second one: ip_forward=no spoofprotect=yes syncookies=no There are also some other folders in that directory and some files (ifstate and ifstate.hotplug and some directories: if-down.d ; if-post-down.d ; if-pre-up.d ; if-up.d )

u mean the exact content of those files? Il boot up in knoppix in a half hour or so and do that then edit: make that 5 mins. okay, Im here in knoppix 3.6 now (Btw, I just noted that during the knoppix bootup sequence it said "Eth0 detected, DHCP broadcast started" )

sorry bout the language =x I understand, it can happen. The only thing with mandrake was that it was really easy to install (virtually just as easy as windows, xept for the partitioning is tricky because of dualboot). I heard knoppix was based off debian, but Im afraid I would mess up my dual boot on this computer. :( Im a bit unsure of which distro to check next.. being a Major noob and all..

thanks for the reply. I can't check without the router because there is quite a big distance between the two hehe hey guys, so is this the end? Am I just gonna have to get rid of mandrake? Or what?

where would I find those dir's? I assume in the ramdrive that knoppix makes? (dunno if Il have time to check, I got my last economics and biology exam tomorow...) EDIT: I did the following today, first, since with my settings as DHCP i couldn't even get the network service started (if I tried to ping anyhting it said 'network service unavailable') so I tried LAN-> static IP. I then gave the Ip I get from my router in windows and the netmask thing....after that I can ping myself, and if I try to ping other machines, or the router itself, it doesnt work...but I CAN ping myself....so thats something :) Anyway; I went to knoppix and did what u said, in the /etc/network/interfaces there was this: #etc/network/interfaces --configuration file for ifup(8);ifdown (8) #the loopback interface #automatically ... when upgrading auto lo interface lo internet loopback or something like that (It might be tiny bits different, I dont remember exactly) and in the /etc/network/options ip_found=no spoofprotect=yes syncookies=no :unsure: anyone still here? :unsure:

yeah, my internet works fine in knoppix (3.6) BTW, it used to be able to ping stuff, well, I mean, it used to be able to at least TRY to ping things, even though it didnt get responses...but now it just wont let it do it at all.. so i figure somewhere Ive screwed up some setting and made it even worse... can i restore all settings to default or somtn like that?

update: I tried to restart the service from the command line; it said stuff like shutdown ..... OK shutdown ..... OK disable.... OK setting network parameters..... OK bringing up loopback interface......OK bringing up interface eth0....... (LONG pause, once again, 15+seconds) and then FAILED. I did find the firewall settings though, and actually, the firewall wasn't even installed, so I installed it and made sure to allow everything I need. Im still stuck without internet, and dualbooting is getting so annoying just to be able to use the net.... maybe I can restore all original settings and start over? or any other advice? :unsure: :unsure: :unsure:

Il try again tomorow. Last time however when I looked for the firewall I couldn't find it at all.... whre exactly should I be looking for it? last time I went to services- but it wasnt in the list there.. and with name your box, what do you mean exactly? (I have an english and economics exam so I wont get around to it today anymore). thanks a lot guys, I appreciate it!
