  1. Belive me, sometimes even cash did't help at all.
  2. That thing with "I can use any distro" is more or less true. Of course is the same structure or commands but in the real life this is not enough. It's like pretending you can love every woman. They are basically the same :) Ok. Thanks guys, I have learnt a lot from this topic and I give up my idea. Once again, thank you.
  3. Good point. I think that we have found some interesting ideas in this topic.
  4. I think you are right at list on the most of the arguments, but: I am a "veteran" user, I think that this kind of projects are not started by beginers. The best page to find dedicated pages on the Internet is the Mandriva Page on Distrowatch. The name of the distribution and the distribution itself have a great importance, it's not the same thing to use Gentoo and Mandriva even both of them are Linux distros. I belive that you will not like Linux anymore if someone will force you to use different distro motivating that is the same thing. We are different and Linux distros are a reflection of that differences, in fact a reflection of us.
  5. I did not know that this idea was used by another community. Interesting. So this bring us to another subtile conclusion. People are interested by Distorwatch if the "modification" of the results bring such reaction from the users :)
  6. Ok. So I can see that most of the users consider this to be a bad idea. I accept the comments but probably I will still try to "help" Mandriva on that top using the romanian Mandriva users community. Now I belive that the second place can be generated by the lack of interest from the users but I still think that is something missing in that puzzle. Please stop the rude comments I have build and mentained the romanian users community site for several years so I think that I did my homework very well in promoting Mandriva. I post on this site to find interesting opinions not to start an useless argue. Giving to users the possibilty to show the interest for the distribution if they click on a banner is not cheating, it's more like a reminder, nobody force them to do that so virtualy you can expect the results to be even zero ! To use a script to automatically acces that page everyday and to spread this script among the users and on the Internet is cheating and I will never accept such thing even if Mandriva is on the last place on Distrowatch.
  7. If you check the top for the last month you will se that Mandriva is getting closer. It's still strange that even when a new release is near (2006) and the users visit more often that page, it cant get much closer. I mean it's very untrue, it's not a natural evolution of the top. It's like someone push number one further. Imagine this. We try to promote Mandriva and we can't. Then...
  8. I am not very good at english to explain you very well why this top is important. As a mater of fact you are right, it is not important at all but there are a lot of numbers there and numbers allways describe something, in this case the interest for a distribution. It's obvious that to be the first or the last is not the same thing. I must confess that I visit Mandriva page on Distrowatch ocasionaly but I am here and I use Mandriva and like me pobably there are hundreds of users wich are not counted on that page. For me Ubuntu is not a revelation and really i can't remember when it came to be on the first position but i saw a lot of articles on the Internet refering to it as the number one distribution in the world because of that top. But this is not about Ubuntu is about the Mandriva users community and showing its existence and strength. It's not a manipulation of the result, users are not forced to click the banners.
  9. This topic on Mandriva Club forum make me think about the Page hit ranking on Distrowatch, where Mandriva is on the second place. Speaking of Page hit ranking on Distrowatch, I would like to propose you a little "project". If the Mandriva users community exists and is the greatest, then we can make Mandriva be (again) the first in that top. I have a personal site, dedicated to Mandriva Linux and I want to post a banner pointing to the Mandriva page on Distrowatch so that users can easily help distribution to gain points clicking on it. If all the dedicated sites, or a great number of them will do the same then we can get the first position on top. I did not consider this to be cheating, instead is a proof that the Mandriva users exists and they are the greatest linux community. Any sugestions, ideas, a name for that project a text for the banner... ?
  10. Look at Linspire. There are to opposite conclusions. It's easy to use Click-n-Run to install other software but they also consider to be hard to install other software. I think it's the most stupid test I've ever seen.
  11. I can't boot in Windows because there are more than four years since I didn't use it anymore. :D The mainboard have only two channels for SATA so I didn't understand why is Mandrake reserving four (a-d). If that's the explanation... As I said in the first post, I have allready try to install LILO on floppy.
  12. I am an experienced user but this time I can't solve the problem myself. I know that /dev/hda is the master HDD on IDE1 but MDK recognize it like /dev/hde . It's a nonsense. Which is the correct partition ? If I can find why appear this problem I can solve it...I think...
  13. Hi ! I have recently upgraded my system to an Barton 2800 with an Asus A7V880 (KT880 chipset). I have installed Mandrake 10.0 OE and everything goes fine. When I try to boot after install, LILO doesn't load, it appears just an L on the screen. Same for 9.2 or 10.0 CE. Knoppix and Mandrake Move work fine on the sistem. I try to install LILO on a floppy disk : same problem. I have noticed a strange problem for Mandrake, it recognize the first IDE drive as /dev/hde and not /dev/hda . I have also noticed that this problem is only for the 2.6 kernel, with the 2.4 the drives are correct but still doens't load LILO. I suppose is not the MBR since it doesn't boot from the floppy. I have made a lot of changes in BIOS: nothing happend. Any suggestions ? Maybe a BIOS upgrade could resolve the problem ?
  14. How can I make the CTRL key to work in MC ? I am using MDK 10 CE and KDE. In documentation there there are some explanations but I can't figure out how to make that key work.
  15. I have a problem with xmms in MDK 10.0 . Whem I use KDE I can't minimize the main window, equalizer window and playlist simultaneously. It seems to be a bug and I didn't find a solution for it.
  16. Thanks a lot. I am a little disappointed. I was expecting to find a great store in Paris.
  17. No, I was wondering if there is a shop with promotion things, such as T-shirts or tux puppets etc.
  18. Where can I find a linux shop in Paris ? I am from Romania and someone will make a trip to Paris, and i will like to buy something. The problem is I don't know such a place... Is there a linux shop.

    Idesk

I am using MDK 9.2 on an old IBM. I want icons on desktop and the best solution I can find is Idesk. The problem is that I can't make Idesk start at login. I am using GDM and IceWM, i don't use autologin and the computer boot in X. I find something about ~/.Xclients but it didn't work....
