  1. Vmware memory errors on XP/Mandrake

    hello,

     

    trying to install mandrake 10 on vmware workstation release 4 in XP. i created the virtual machine but when i go to start it, i pop the cdrom in the tray and after it scans for usb devices i get a memory error like this:

    i tried changing memory size allocation for the machine but had no luck. i realize im posting a windows question kinda but its linux related though. :cheesy:

    any help apprecciated.

  3. can't acquire ip address from wireless router

    its a 4 port linksys, the 11mb one. BEFW11S4. yeah im using WEP. at this point though what i want to do is use a script to bring eth1 onliune at work or at home. at home i use WEP on my linksys, but at work the WAP i connect to doesnt use it it so i dont think i can have that in my ifcfg-eth1 file, right?

     

    here's the script i used as i dont have eth1 start at boot, i just run it when i log in:

    /sbin/ifconfig eth1 down

    /sbin/iwconfig eth1 essid XXXXXX mode Managed key XXXXXXXXXX

    /sbin/ifconfig eth1 up

    /sbin/dhcpcd eth1

     

    what happens is when i try this script at home(script is called "home") this is the output i get.

     

    root@localhost# ./home

    Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :

    SET failed on device eth1 ; Operation not supported.

    /etc/dhcp/dhcpcd.exe: line 27 .: filename argument required

     

     

    if i turn off the encryption on my router and i have no issues connectiing but of course i dont want that. :juggle:

    any idea? i will try adding that extra info in my script.

    actually, i was able to connect w/out the encryption but not with it on. it just times out at boot.

    by the way, what are the actual commands in drake to bring eth0 or eth1 online and offline? id rather not do it at boot because i have encyprion set up at home, but they dont at my office on an access point which poses another question to you. will i still be able to connect to my access point at work with eth1 even though its set for my WEP key and what not? thanks

    hey,

     

    ive done some searching around here but cant find the answer i need. on drake 10.0 on my laptop, my wireless card is detected fine(SMC2632W) and i can see the proper module gets loaded(orinco or similar). but i cant get an ip address from my linksys router.

     

    i thought it might have been something weird with my ESSID seetings and my encryption key so i decided to temporarily turn off WEP on my router and went back to MCC to properly remove and add the wireless connection which i did.

     

    as soon as it asks me to restart the network i say yes but it still doesnt get an address. im right next to the router anyway for testing.

     

    when the network tried to restart it just says:

    now when i had the encryption set up i had a very strong signal but now w/out the encryption and even closer i get a 0% strength signal!!! duh.

     

    to make matters worse drake tells me sometimes the card has been removed when it wasnt. i have my settings set to "any" instead of "managed" but that didnt do the trick either. any help appreciated. :help:

  8. ghost image restore not working [solved]

    hey all,

     

    i have a ghost image (ghost 8) and have read it can handle restoring lilo w/out a problem. well i just restored the image (mandrake 10) to my machine and when i boots low and behold i get all 9's across the screen. does this mean the bootloader is corrupt? if so how can i restore it? i have a boot disk i created from a mandrake 9.1 instal(just an install disk though)l a while back but i also have the install cd's for drake 10.

     

    of course i dont want to have to go through another install, i just want to be able to restore lilo IF that is the problem...........any help is greatly appreciated.

     

    also, i dont know if its worth mentioning but i can browse the ghost image with ghost explorer if i need anything from the image. tia

     

    at the moment im downloading a knoppix cd to see about possibly restoring lilo.

    hey all,

     

    seems like this sucker is the only application in mandrake 10 that doesnt want to save the borders "inside" knode. i dont mean the outer window itself, thats fine and starts maximized. i mean the borders in knode (I.E) my newsgroups on the left always end up being covered but the pane on the right and i have to always drag it back over to see what the hell im looking at. :evilmod:

    if you want to connect to your linux box from any windows box use putty. it works great, uses SSH, you dont have to install it, its free............not a bad thing about it and its easy to use.

    actually, mondorescue is kinda old no? when i tried booting from the mondo cd it bascailly tries to download 9.1 or 9.2 packages(im using drake 10) which wont work. maybe there is a version i could compile or something on their site.

     

    i never really liked partimage to be honest.

    edit: i actually just installed mondorescue from their site. i installed the one it says is for mandrake 9. i installed the needed packages via urpmi and even installed libslang-devel (drake package) and FC3's slang package and now i can run mondorestore from the command line. ill see how it goes. :)

  21. help with setting up ftp server

    No need for anyone to post thier conf file, point the brower of your choice to www.vsftpdrocks.org and you'll find a well written and easy to follow tutorial on setting up vsftpd.

     

     

    see heres where the problem lies still. im running this ftp server(proftpd+gproftpd) and i have a handful of users that basically share files with me from their remote windows boxes. while setting it up, gproftpd creates the users on my linux system itself with the permissions i choose. but heres the sticky part. i only give rights to upload into the "uploads" folder. now when one of the users logs in, creates a folder and uploads whatever files, its now in their name. so me, being the only user on this linux system, wants to browse with say konqueror and rename stuff and move stuff around to my liking but i cant of course because they own the files. any idea how to better this setup? i love proftpd if i can just get past this hump.

    hey there,

     

    since ive only had success cloning my etx3 partition with ghost 8 over the network(windows version) i wanted to try the linux version. i set up my windows box ftp server but i have no clue as to what to set up as a user name to allow a connection in bulletproof ftp server. i tried to create "gfl" as a user since you log in with that on the linux machine when you boot up from the cd.

     

    on the windows end i see a connection made but it quickly kicks me out saying login failed. documentation is scarce for this app unless someone has a clue. thanks.
