Waiting untill ATI puts out a better driver that covers it.
Thats the bad thing about opensource. Except in a few cases we always seem to be waiting for hardware manufacurers to catch up and write drivers for us.
Or if you get lucky an opensource driver is out that works. But since I don't have, and it looks like never will have, an ATI card I'm of little real help.
But then again when am I ever really helpfull?

Stupidly the kernel source was NOT included on the Mandrake9.2 cd's.
You'll have to goto a mirror and download them.
Or use from a commandline
urpmi kernel-source
This should work if your running a normal kernel.

try getting the latest drivers for AC'97 from the VIA site.
They used to have pretty good linux support.
-
Try the app FilmGimp it might have what your looking for.

Oh great.
And one of the car companies is Diemler, one of the SCO targets.
The first virus to hit a car and we can ALL take microsoft to court. The auto industry is nothing like the software industry. One failure and its a day in court.

The numbers mean the kernel version. Basicly the higher the number the newer the kernel.
mdk means that its a Mandrake modified kernel. Basicly supermount and NTFS support are the big things added by Mandrake.

I use Ebay sometimes and yes I did have trouble the first time I tried to make a sales account. They insisted on using M$ Exploder. But about three weeks later they started accepting netscape both in linux and M$. Then I tried Mozzilla and it worked also.
That was three months ago and things might have changed back but I don't think they would do that after going through some effort to make it universal. That page might still be a forgotten throw back and someone from here might be all they need to be reminded of it. It is a little used page.

Just partition half of the drive with PM and format it FAT32. Linux will find it and during the install choose expert option(its not really an expert type option its just a manual check).
From there you can remove create and resize any partition on any drive you want. It even promts you with corrections if you forget something.

I know when I started using computers everyone told me about how NOT to get a virus. And I started with 8086 machines.

A very large hammer works also. But this does meen leaving the basement to go find it. I keep mine next to the computer now.

This post should be a 'sticky'

You seem to write quite well. Being a noob to linux my just be giving you a somewhat unique opportunity to add to this forum. If you can, could you add the three or four steps it took to setup your URPMI repositoies and maybe another noob hint or two. Your experience could help others who are a bit shy about asking questions.
As you have found out the Mandrake Update graphical interface is really just a front end for urpmi and sometimes it doesn't work well. At that point it becomes best to revert to a command line to update the system.

Did you run the md5sums on the downloaded ISO's before using them?
-
Have you tried switching the drives ide ports?
Maybe its some type of ide problem and not the drive.
Just a shot in the dark.

They were the FA311 cards. And I soon learned why they were only 8 bucks. Windows didn't even like them. They worked, but windows seemed even more buggy with them installed.
Knowing what I know now I probably could have gotten them to work in RH7.2. But since it was my first try at linux I was an idiot. Seimens cards(got them with a four port seimens router) though never ever gave me a bit of trouble. Worked right out of the box with every kernel. For the extra 5 bucks they cost they were WELL worth it. They even seemed faster in windows.
Sorry as you can see from my experience above that was quite a while ago. That was a fun day. Got rid of a few old cases and two of those great green screens. Hard drives really are pretty hard. Had to get a bit closer to really take those babies apart. Must have got rid of a closets worth of junk that day.

Go ahead and accept the realplayer you just tried to install. Their community(open source) player works well but is a bit less feature rich. And getting the radio stations to work is something I have yet to do.
Hint Hint to anyone out there.

I canged as much of mine as I could to 96. My monitor will run higher I think but I don't notice the change over 96. Everything is REAL crisp and cleap for me.

Try using the basic VESA driver. Its way down the list under the last heading. this might at least get you going.
-
When I changed partitioning I just reloaded/installed lilo from the Madrake first disk in resque mode. I could have wrote everything down and hand edited things but reinstalling was an under 1 minute fix.
-
After working for two weeks to get my two 311's to work I turned them into shotgun targets. Truely the most spectacular use for them I could think of.
-
try installing it from the commandline. You have far more control that way.
-
Putting the boot loader on a floppy should work quite well.
-
Have you turned OFF ALL plug and play options in the bios? Have you tried turning OFF usb support in the bios?
-
Try turning up the sound in either Aumix or Kmix.
As for installing the app. What does the webside providing it say?
What programs are you starting that take time? Some are faster at starting than others. Though the app running speed is different.
KDE is the slowest overall besk top. Its not because you have a different version. there are no hacked or crippled versions of linux.
As for the vidio thing you might have to download the vidio driver from the cards manufacturers/chipsets site.

I use both Lilo on the MBR and lilo on a boot floppy. I just works for me with no problems.
PPPoE ADSL, i have to activate every time?
