  1. I didn't have to update. It was enough to run as root "alsactl restore". :) Thanks for help, anyway.
  2. Hello, I'm using Mandrake 10.0. Since Thursday I have following problem: When I try to shut down system, it automatically switches from "progress bar" to "text mode" and then stops at "stopping alsa". I tried to wait a couple of minutes, but it seems that the system permanently crashes and I have to switch off PC with the button. Very annoying. What happened and how can I fix it? I did not change anything in configuration... Thanks Borys

    Installing Octave

I did as you told me. I uninstalled everything, configured URPMI and typed "urpmi octave". Everything has been downloaded and installed once more. Unfortunately, when I now try to run "octave", I get just the same error: octave: relocation error: /usr/lib/octave-2.1.59/liboctinterp.so: symbol _ZNSt15basic_stringbufIcSt11char_traitsIcESaIcEE7seekoffExSt12_Ios_SeekdirSt13_I os_Openmode, version GLIBCXX_3.4 not defined in file libstdc++.so.6 with link time reference
  4. Hello, As I'm studying science, it would be handy to have some advanced mathematical application on my home-PC. MatLab is not free, so I decided to try Octave. But... First, I wanted to compile it from sources, but I got error-messages while running ./configure (something about "C++ sanity check", I had no idea, what it could be). Therefore I downloaded RPM via rpm.pbone.net. Before I could install it, I had to install about half dozen additional applications and libraries, GNUPlot and some others. Finally, I could install Octave. It went fine, but when I'm trying to run it, I got following message: octave: relocation error: /usr/lib/octave-2.1.59/liboctinterp.so: symbol _ZNSt15basic_stringbufIcSt11char_traitsIcESaIcEE7seekoffExSt12_Ios_SeekdirSt13_I os_Openmode, version GLIBCXX_3.4 not defined in file libstdc++.so.6 with link time reference Could someone help me fix it or tell me how to install Octave that it would works? It would be really great to be able to use this application on my PC... Thanks a lot for any help. Borys
  5. Thanks for help. I couldn't make it work with MPlayer or RealPlayer, but I installed Xine together with W32-codecs and now everything seems to be OK.
  6. I'm afraid I need more hints. I am able to use URPMI, but I don't know what codecs I have to look for.
  7. Hello, I have installed RealPlayer. It works fine, but only with audio and video streams which are "typical" for RP (e.g. .ram). Unfortunately, I cannot run Windows Media Player streams (.asx) -- and I would like to, because some internet-radios I would listen to offer only .asx-streams and no RP-alternative. Please tell me where can I get necessary drivers / plugins and how do I install them. Or, alternatively, which other player could I use to listen to .asx? I tried MPlayer, but it didn't work, although I compiled it with all available drivers. Thank you Borys
  8. Thnaks for your help. It worked fine, when I logged in as root. So I just reinstalled whole OpenOffice. It took about ten minutes. Now it works just fine.
  9. Hello! I'm having a very strange problem with OpenOffice Calc. I cannot save any spreadsheets. The program then freezes and I have to kill it with Process Table (or with CTRL-C, if I'm running it from terminal) -- and the data are lost. The same thing happens if it does an auto-save. The strange thing is that it worked just fine till today, and I didn't change any configuration settings (OpenOffice- or system-related) lately. I tried to run it from terminal, but I do not get any error messages. As said, the program just freezes and I have to kill it. Other components of OpenOffice (Writer, etc.) work just fine. I have a Polish edition of OO, but I do not think it has anything to do with the problem, because everything worked fine since August -- until now. Could anybody give me some hints? Of course, I could reinstall OO, but I don't want to do it, since the problem can repeat itself sooner or later anyway. Thanks Borys
  10. Hello! I tried to use MPlayer to play a movie with .mp4-extension. I get picture, but there is no sound. In GUI I got an error message: "Cannot find codec for audio format 0x6134706D". I tried to run it in the terminal and then I got some more information. Trying to force audio codec driver family libmad... Requested audio codec family [faad] (afm=faad) not available. Enable it at compilation. Cannot find codec for audio format 0x6134706D. Read DOCS/HTML/en/codecs.html! ========================================================================== vo: X11 running at 1024x768 with depth 24 and 32 bpp (":0" => local display) ========================================================================== Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family Selected video codec: [ffodivx] vfm:ffmpeg (FFmpeg MPEG-4) ========================================================================== Audio: no sound Starting playback... Could someone tell me what kind of codecs I need and how do I install them? The problem is that codecs generally are one big abracadabra for me, because I watch movies on PC very rarely. Thanks for help. P.S.: I installed MPlayer from rpm. Maybe this is the problem? I am going to try to compile it from sources on weekend, but right now I am wondering - how can I add just this problematic codec to MPlayer after it has been installed.
  11. Thanks for help. I succeeded. "Format.com" was on my boot-disk, but I had first to type in text-mode "extract edb.cab format.com" (I found it out after a couple of hours). So I formatted C: and 98-installer worked. But! When I booted it directly from CD-ROM, it still wanted to configurate HD first, and then it crashed. I had to run it in text-mode, go to E: (CD-ROM) and type "setup.exe". Then the real installer was initiated, ScanDisk scanned both partitions and the installation began. Very clever, indeed...
  12. Hello, everybody! First of all, this is my first question here, although I registered for some time ago and I found a lot of good advices here. It is a big shame that this first question concerns... Windows, but it has also something to do with Linux, and I don't know where else could I get some help. I had one HD with two partitions. There was C: for WINDOWS XP and D: for other files. I bought a new, bigger hard disk and I installed Linux Mandrake 10.0 on it (and I created a few new partitions there). I liked Mandrake 10.0 very much, so I decided to delete XP. Because Win-games don't work very well on Linux (despite WineX, etc.), I decided to install 98 and use it for games only (while I would Linux for everything else). OK. First I had to delete XP from C: I did it while using Mandrake -- I just chose Configure Your Computer, Mount Points, Partitions, choose the partition, unmount, format. OK, done with it. That part was easy. Then I wanted to install 98 on the same partition (C:) where XP had been. I booted the computer from 98 install CD and began the installation procedure. I thought it will be a piece of cake. Well, it wasn't. The 98-installer had some problems with recognizing partition C: It asked me to "configure hard disk". I chose YES (there wasn't any other options), but then I got a lot of error messages (I couldn't even read them, they went very quick through the screen) and "grey screen of death". I had to reboot with the button. So I rebooted from the CD again, but this time I chose text-mode. With "fdisk" (the Windows-one) I kind of reassigned partition C: as the system one. It said it is OK, but that I have to format it. Then came the big problem. I don't have the "format.exe"-file! It is not on the CD, it is not on my old boot-disk! I tried to install 98 one more time without formatting, but I got the same error messages. I tried to remove Lilo from mbr (fdisk /mbr), but I didn't help either. So, my two questions are: 1. Is it something here that I'm doing wrong? 2. If I have only to format C: from DOS first, where can I get this stupid "format"-file which can do it? Thanks a lot for your time and help Borys (Additional information: The old disk is master (with C:), the new disk is slave. I don't know if this is of any importance, though... And before I did not had any problems with running XP after Mandrake was installed (I did it a couple of times to check something).)
