  1. Last night, before I went to bed, I rebooted the machine from the command line. When I walked into the office this morning and looked at the monitor, I saw that it froze at the Boot screen and had remained like that. I did a hard restart and it booted fine. Did it freeze because I rebooted it from the command line, or should that matter? Maybe it was a fluke?
  2. I've never even gotten the sleep function to work in Windows....in any version of Windows for that matter. Everytime I try to wake it up, the computer comes back on, but the monitor stays off, so I have to reboot also.
  3. I haven't yet heard of it. Is it a free program?
  4. I am also having this kopete/yahoo messenger problem. I just got version 10.0 a few days ago. Does it not have the newest version of Kopete? I noticed in the hyperlink above, it refrenced to version 10.0. I clicked on the link and it said I don't have access to the server. I'm totally confused. Help!
  5. Never mind. I got it to work. I just put in my Windows 2000 disc and that one booted just fine. I did a quick install of the OS, then rebooted, popped in the Mandrake CD and now it's working fine.
  6. I have a hard drive that I currently have Lindows OS on, which I never really used. This is the one I want to install Mandrake on. I put the CD in and when the computer booted up, it just booted straight into Lindows. It won't seem to boot from the CD. I tried putting in a Windows XP disc, and it will recognize the CD, but once you hit a key to start booting from the disc, the screen goes black and the computer just hangs. What do I do now? I removed the disc, let it boot up, and it loads Lindows just fine. I don't get it.
  7. I'm confused. So SCO is suing Linux because they claim they own the source code that Linux uses?
  8. Can someone please explain the significance of this picture? Who is SCO and what are they doing to Linux? [moved from Installing Mandrake by spinynorman]
  9. What is SAMBA? I've heard the term before, but don't know what it is. Does it come with the retail version of Mandrake 10.0?
  10. Thanks for the quick reply guys. I think I'll just install Mandrake on the drive since I have swapable hard drives and already have Win XP on one. Now on to my next question. I also have an FTP server that is running Windows 2000 and it is networked with my primary PC currently running XP. If I am running Mandrake, will I be able to network it with my ftp server and will I be able to see the files since the server is formatted as NTFS?
  11. I'm going for my first Mandrake Linux 10.0 install tomorrow and I have a question regarding partitioning. I want to be able to dual boot between Windows 2000 and Mandrake (at least until I can do away with Windows). I also want to have a separate partition for files that can be used between both OS. So...should I create one partition for Windows, another partition for Mandrake, and then a third for the data storage? Or do Windows and Mandrake share the same partition in a dual-boot system? I've never had this type of setup before and this part confuses me. It's a 30 GB hard drive, by the way.
  12. Ahh...a fellow serviceman! I'm currently a SSgt in the Air Force. I too hope to soon be freed from the slavery of Microsoft.
  13. Thank you very much for the welcome. I look forward to becoming a Linux user and hopefully I'll be able to leave the Windows world behind soon. I'm also hoping to get my Linux+ certification soon, but if may have to wait a while since CompTIA is about to change the test in late 2004.
  14. Hello everyone. I'm totally new to Linux. I ordered a copy of Mandrake Linux and it should arrive today. I'm looking forward to setting it up and getting started. Linux has really peeked my interest and I want to learn more. I'm sure I will some questions though. Anyway, I just wanted to say hi. Kevin
