  1. I've tried to use the Lilo boot option for using the 2.4.x (I can't remember the exact kernel, but it's 2.4.something) but as soon as I enter X the mouse doesn't work and all sorts of error messages pop-up on the screen.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Is the 2.4.x kernel even compatible with Mandrake 10 OE?

    Thanks again folks!

  2. I'm tring to install the hsflinmodem-5.03.27lnxtbeta03042700.tar.gz (the conexant beta drivers) file and when it comes to running 'hsfconfig' I get an error after it asks me to type the directory in which my kernel source is located in. It asks me to check the contents of a file called 'hsf-buildlog.txt'. Here is the contents of 'buildlog.txt':

    rm -f *.o *.a

    make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/lib/hsf/modules/osspec'

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here and how I can fix it?

    Thanks folks!

I am using kernel 2.6.3-7 on Mandrake 10 OE.

  3. I'm trying to install an nforce driver I got from the NVIDIA site.

I am trying to install it with the line: rpm --rebuild NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0274.src.rpm, as it says in the install instructions. However, when I do this I get the message:

/usr/lib/rpm/rpmb: No such file or directory

Does anyone know how I would go about install this?

    Thanks

  4. Am having a 'problem' with starting up Mandrake 10.0 (OE).

When "checking for new hardware" it says "FAILED". What does this mean?

Also, when it says "Bringing up interface for eth0" it takes about a minute before it finishes doing so. What does this mean (I have a feeling it is modem related)? Is there any way to speed this up?

    Thanks folks.

  5. Ok, it appears the strange characters are gone.

This is now coming up when 'startx' is entered:

Parse error on line 1 of section (null) in file /etc/x11/XF86Config-4 "net" is not a valid keyword in this section.

(EE) problem parsing the config file

    (EE) error from xf86HandleConfigFile()

    Fatal server error:

    no screens found

X10: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X Server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

    Still can't get into X

  6. change them without going into X! it was important for me.

I can't get into X, that's what I'm trying to do when the problems happen.

I've tried changing the monitor and video card settings to the ones I used originally (when I first installed Mandrake) and the problem is still there.

  7. What video card?

What is the default language chosen at install?

When you say characters, do you mean you can actually make them out, or does it appear to be huge text so big that they are lines on the screen?

    It's a Nvidia FX5200.

The default language chosen was either English or some variation of English (New Zealand English if that is an option?)

The characters are about half symbols like ?'s and grey squares, so they're unreadable.

  8. Thanks for all the help! Much appreciated. :D

I tried 'XF86config', but that didn't fix the problem.

Solarian could be on to something with the monitor settings though. I changed them (in X) to a higher refresh rate which I use in windows, which seemed to work fine (in X) then it restarted with the problems.

I'll have a go at xfconfig again and see what happens.

  9. Just installed Mandake 10 (OE) and have had a few problems. The big one at the moment is that it now starts at the konsole and wont let me use the 'startx' command. The last lines it comes up with are:

    Using config file: "/etc/x11/xf86Config-4"

Parse error on line 1 of section (null) in file /etc/x11/xf86Config-4 (and then all sorts of jarbled text and characters, which then leaves me at the konsole prompt again but every time I type something in it doesn't type letters, but characters)

Can anyone help me fix this?

Does anyone know the cause of this?

    Thanks!

    Sam.
