I personally don't think it would work maintaining Mandriva as a community based distro. It might go well at first, but as time goes on, the work would fall upon the 1 or 2 super dedicated individuals. Then as time goes on, there would always be something "more important" to do than helping out others (ie. maintaining the distro). But if it was maintained by the community, what would the difference be between that and Debian?

Just for discussion's sake, I thought I would tell you what I was told today by a Windows information technician for a very large national "company". I ask him if they ever considered using Linux instead of Windows, and he said no, categorically, because of security. His argument was that, since Linux is open source, everyone knows the codes, so therefore it would be too easy to "break" the system. Whereas, the code for Windows is unknown, therefore much harder to break. I didn't believe him, but I thought it was interesting on how he was so convinced on the "greatness" of WindowsXP (but not Vista!).

Yves, thanks for the translation.

I just signed, too.

With this post, I was just "fishing" for information. As I mentioned in my first post, I have always used Mandriva. In fact, I've been a member of this board since 2002, and was a member of the MUB board before this one started. The reason I'm member #584 is because when they started this board, I was traveling for work. I actually do not have any intentions of changing, unless things get really, really bad with Mandriva. I like Mandriva, probably mostly because I'm so use to it. For me, the saying "You can't teach an old dog new tricks", is true! The question about a user-friendly distro just came to my mind when I read what Adam said on another post: Adam's Leaving
It's possible the company is going to retrench around corporate / OEM work. In which case most of what I do becomes superfluous. Of course, that's potentially bad news for Mandriva-as-a-general-purpose-end-user-distribution; it will come to rely ever more heavily on volunteer contributions as the paid staff work only on things that benefit OEM / corporate products. The answers are interesting, and I appreciate them.

Yeh, I know, tyme. I asked a tough question because there are many types of users and many needs, along with many wants. I was thinking of a "newcomer-user", that doesn't do any programming, script writing, etc. I was thinking of a person that just uses the computer around the house writing e-mails and letters, surfing on the Internet, keeping track of his pictures, playing games, making "homemade" videos, watching films, trying new programs, etc. As I mentioned, it was just a curiosity question. In fact, the answers were interesting. Thanks!
-
Yeh, I see what you mean, artic. That depends on what you consider "a normal user" and what you consider "user friendly".
That was my question."newcomer-friendly" -
Years ago I bought a new computer with W98 on it. I hated it. That's when I started looking into, and using linux. At that time, Mandrake was the recommended "user friendly" distro. A lot has changed since then, I know. I've never used another distro in all these years except for a short time with Suse (when the Mandrake distro wasn't too good, and I wasn't able to get it loaded on my system.) Just for curiosity, what would be considered the best "user friendly", distro now, for a "normal" user?
-
Adam, I'm sorry this is happening to you. I trust you'll find a better position. You've been a valuable help to all of us, and we do appreciate it. To repeat what's already been said, you always gave Mandriva a "lift".

If you want, try this. In MCC, you can remove flash-plugin - Adobe Flash Player 10.0. Then download and install the following rpm file flash-plugin-9.

AHHHH?!they aren't mountable! -
Today, I tried something. Would you believe that I didn't have to mount the device to play a music CD? I put it in, but the Device Notifier didn't give me any options, as it wasn't mounted. I opened up Xine, pressed the play "CD" button, and. . . music!!
-
I guess the answer is no. On another forum here they said it wasn't possible.
-
Is it possible to have the Device Notifier in KDE4 give other options to open/play the various plugins (pen drive), CDs and DVDs (Xine, Amarok, etc.)?

As Yves said, if you have KDE4, you no longer have the "desktop". If you have KDE4, right click somewhere on the screen and then click on "add widget". In that list, you will find "folder view". With that, you can add a "Desktop". It will be a transparent box.

Fixefox3 has been giving me difficulty, and when I ran it in Konsole, it gave errors, such as
*** NSPlugin Viewer *** ERROR: could not reconstruct XVisual from visualID(firefox:18492): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_hash_table_remove_internal: assertion `hash_table != NULL' failedWith only these 2 plugins installed: kde4-nsplugins and nspluginwrapper, I just removed the nspluginwrapper. Now Firefox3 isn't giving me any "complaints" in Konsole, and it seems to be working OK.

Hi, welcome to the Board!
You just need a bit of patience to learn all you need with Mandriva. What programs would you like to add? It seems odd that you would need to build the programs, unless you need some that are very uncommon.
For Firefox, go to Edit, Preferences, then Main. There you'll see a choice as to where and how to download items.

Well, the system is getting faster. Because of adam's explanation about kernels, I installed a different kernel (kernel-desktop-latest). Because of the 2009 errata wiki page, I also "fixed" my skype "problem". Now there's another problem with pulseaudio. The quote below is copied from /var/log/messages. Any idea how to resolve the problem? Thanks.
Nov 8 12:21:38 localhost ifplugd(eth0)[2373]: Program executed successfully.Nov 8 12:21:45 localhost pulseaudio[3361]: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) failed: Operation not permitted

adam, thank you!

Thank you scarecrow. I keep forgetting to look at Wiki, although I am getting better at it.

Yeh, I agree. Anyone have any idea as to the reason for naming them that way? There's got to be a good reason (at least I would hope so!).It seems a bit nutty to me to have the word "kernel" in the names of packages that do not contain a kernel. Can I get rid of all those kernels I have installed?
-
Thanks everyone, that was really interesting. I'm glad I asked the question!
you only need one installed, though. This was what seemed so strange to me. I don't think I "purposely" installed the other kernels. I presume I only need kernel-desktop-586? I would like to get rid of the others if I don't need them, even if they don't do any harm, like the Izma-kernel (as Adam mentioned), as they also keep "multiplying". I just looked in MCC to see which kernels I have installed. I would have just put in a command in Konsole to find the info, but I don't know it! Anyway, I copied and pasted these:

Thanks. So far I have disabled "Network Time Protocol" in MCC in "Manage date and time".

Just one last look, please. Here's todays /var/log/messages file. My system seems to be loading up too slowly, but when I push F2 while it's loading, it will not show anything. This time, I added a few more minutes that were not on my first post. Thanks.

Running W95 & W98 encyclopedias in Mandriva
in Virtual Machines and Emulators
Posted
I have some books that are on CDs for W95/W98. I have a dual system with WXP (which I rarely use). In order to run these programs, what would be the best way? I could install them on WXP and use wine, or use an emulator, which is what I would like to try. I'm using KDE4.
