  1. Greg, I realize I need to add those repos. But for me to change from the 586 to the x86-64, can I just choose the x86-64 architecture from EasyUPPMI, the add the repos, then update my system through MCC?

I of course can download the Free cd, and go that way, then go through EasyURPMI, if that wouldn't mess up my system.

  2. I read about using the Free disk, but I wanted to be sure and get all the drivers, which they say they do not offer on that disk. This is the first install that has properly detected my video card, and I would hate to mess that up if I could avoid it.

  3. I'm an American (from the US!! :P ), but I live in Italy. All the Italians call those from the US (they say USA), "Americans" ("Americani" in Italian) but those from other countries are called by their nationality (Canadians, Argentinians, etc.). Even the immigrants from South America say the same thing, although they often say "Latinos". Along the same line (and keeping to the discussion!), calling a country by a shorter name instead of using the actual name, is common. The United States of America, is called America. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is called the United Kingdom or England, etc. And as Tyme said:

As long as you know what it's referring to, who cares?
  4. I had the same problem, but was able to resolve it by doing what you said you already did: choose the audio driver in skype, and find the right combination in the mixer. I don't remember which mixer settings did the job, though.

  5. When I try to start video in skype and kopete in console, below are the results. Any idea on how to resolve the problem?

  6. I would like the panel to show only the programs that are open on the particular virtual window that I'm using, but the problem is my wife! For a long, long, long time, even if you could see that thunderbird was open (you could see it on the panel), she would still push the icon to open it. Of course when the program wouldn't appear (because it was already open), she would call me, and say something like, "Have you been messing up the computer again!" (She knows me too well!!!!!!). So when she comes to check the e-mail (at least 100 times a day!), I need to make sure she sees that thunderbird is already open. Even at that, I usually have "Internet" on one desktop and my other programs on the other, to try and avoid her causing more damage than ME. If more than one program is open, but thunderbird is not "on top", she still has a tendency to close them all out (pushing the x in the top right corner) until she gets to it.

So yes, having more than one desktop has helped reduce the loss to data in other programs. I also make sure that I save everything when I get up from the computer, because as soon as I get up, she comes and checks the e-mail!

We "old" folks have a hard time with technological advances!

  7. After my last post with a kopete attachment, I also tried a couple of other programs (camstream and camorama), but the webcam didn't work. Before trying guvcview, I decided to try cheese. This time, all went well - it works! I just presumed (silly me!), that if it didn't work in kopete, it wouldn't work in other programs. In fact it didn't work in the other 2. Why does it work with cheese? Any advice on getting it to work with kopete and skype?

  8. OK, I got it. Apart from tidiness, there's no advantage to using multiple virtual desktops. I thought there might be other advantages, such as memory usage, RAM, etc. I'm thinking of adding another panel for my pager (to untidy my present panel), then I can add icons to the existent panel. Maybe I can make everything nicer looking.

    Thanks!

  9. I've always used 2 virtual desktops, just because they were there. Is there an advantage in using more than one? I googled around looking for the answer, and it seems as if the only advantage is not to have the panel cluttered. Are there other reasons? After a couple of days of using only one, I see where I like at least 2. I prefer to use keyboard commands to switch around from program to program, and I can see where it is easier/faster to get to the program I want with 2 desktops.

  10. What are you doing? smile.gif
Same thing as I always do, mess things up! :P

I think I cleaned up the mess I created.

  11. Nope, can't get it installed. By clicking on the 2 .rpm files (listed below), .src file says it installs, but doesn't (using the command: rpm -qa | grep dkms), and the .noarch file will not compile, even though it states that it's installed. I tried the .tar.gz file, but cannot get it installed, either (using ./make. . .). This is, I'm sure, my inability, even though I tried following the various commands and instructions I found on the Internet.

Trying to install the .rpm files from console, I get these results.

  12. I haven't been able to use my webcam since I loaded 2009.0. I would like to use it ( :P ) with skype, ekiga, and or Kopete. I've googled around and looked on this site, but. . . Any ideas on how to get it going would be appreciated. Thanks.

  13. After my new Mandriva Spring install, I now have several kernels installed. Just wondering if I need to keep them all, change some, or even add any. I don't do anything "fancy" with my computer. I just write letters, listen to music, and "goof around" trying to pretend I know something.

  14. I think that only works for single messages though?
Yeh, I think you're right. I save many letters, but I do it one at a time. It only takes me a moment. I do have a lot of letters in my mbox folders, though, which might be good to backup at times, too.
