  1. Hello Gowator,

Thanks for coming back to help me. As you can see from my post, I was able to get rid of eth9. Anyway, yesterday I called my ISP technitions and complained about being disconnected. They are supposed to let me know if it is their problem. I originally thought it was, but then I began to have doubts. That's why I wrote a post here. After reading your post, I tried to connect and update some files through MCC. My var/log/message file (which is really, really, really long!!), states in part:

  2. I am still having problems with my ethernet connection. It will not stay up. After connecting, and while downloading files, after a couple of minutes it just quits, even though the modem is still connected to the phone line. In terminal, I typed adsl-status, while downloading, and after it quit. Below are the results. It will not let me re-connect until I re-boot the computer. Any help to resolve the problem would be greatly appreciated.

  3. With your help, I was able to get my ethernet modem (LAN) connected. Only 1 problem, it doesn't stay connected. After just a couple of minutes, "looses" contact with the internet. It doesn't seem to be the ISP because I did not have the problem with Windows98. In terminal, I type adsl-start. After a moment it states that I'm connected. Then after a couple of minutes, I can no longer load any pages. In terminal I type adsl-status, and it states that I am still connected. Below is some file information. I would appreciate any ideas as how to solve the problem.

  4. I'm up and going!!! Thanks! :headbang: I used your link, followed the instructions, and now it all works. Sorry I did not get back sooner, but I was having problems with my ISP, and could not sign in, even on W98. I called them up, and was finally able to get the problem resolved.

I do have three questions though.

    1) When I start the computer, it still says OK to eth0:9, with the DNS address I posted earlier. Of course it takes a while before it finally goes to eth0:9, because it tries alot with eth0. Is there anyway I could change that?

    2) I followed the instructions on the link you listed, which worked great. To sign in, it has me give the command, in root, adsl-start. Is this different than pppoe?

    3) Is there a way to make a link on my desktop to start adsl-start, and adsl-stop?

Again, thank you very much for helping me. I really appreciate it.

  5. Well aRTee, I managed to push all the wrong buttons (I'm good at that), so then my Lan card was not even recognized. Please don't ask how I did it, it's too embarassing. Anyway, I just did another install, and now my ifconfig looks like this:

    # ifconfig

When I start up linux, it tries to bring up eth0, but states that it cannot find the address, then it says, "claiming ownership pf address 169.254.239.153. After that it states "OK" Should I change the IP address to the one you gave previously?

I also have another question. How do I get pppoe working? Once the modem is up and going, how do I get signed onto the internet?

Gowator mentioned the lights on the modem. There are 5. PWR is green, Diag is not on, LAN is green, ACT is not on, and DSL is a flashing green. It flashes fast, then slow. I have no idea what this means.

    Thanks

  6. I recently installed a Typhoon Speednet High Speed PCI card (10/100Mbps) and an Ericsson Hm210 Ethernet modem. Seeing as how I'm not too good with computers, I can't get them to work. Therefore, I once again am calling upon my friends at MandrakeUsers.org for help. Everything works OK with Windows98. Since I read some of the previously posted problems/answers, I know some of the files I should show. I would appreciate any help you could give me to get me "up and running". There are 2 things you must keep in mind, though. 1) I'm not too good with computers, so I would appreciate any explainations in very simple language, 2) I do not even know how an ethernet modem is suppose to work. Thanks in advance for you help.

  7. I have installed an ethernet modem (using a card, not usb). I'm afraid I just do not know how to use it. It works with Windows98, so I know everything is hooked up OK. With W98, there is not a number to dial to log in, just a program (supplied with the modem), that sends my username and password to my server site. How do I log in with Linux? I have Mandrake 9.2. Thanks.

  8. Just a silly question. The other day a friend stated that with the proper software, it would be possible to read dvds with my regular cdrom player, since the method of reading the disk is the same (laser). Is this possible? If so, I could save me the money and not buy a dvd reader. :headbang:

    Thanks,

Other than one of the above, I do not know what to choose. If needed, I can show the choices in my BIOS.

    Thanks,

  10. I tried to install an ethernet card, "Typhoon Speednet High Speed PCI Card", but have only had problems. After installing it, and re-booting, my screen would go blank when I should be seeing the pretty blue screen and all the icons. I thought I would first dis-able plug and play, but I do not know how. I went into Bios, (Windsows 98), but there is not an option, "Plug and Play - enable/disable". java script:emoticon('B)') How do I disable it?

    Thanks,

    Kieth

  11. Ok! Now, after my login screen (when I have to choose between Windows 98 and Linux), the screen is perfect. Thanks. I do have three other questions, though.

    1) If I wanted to have a 800x600 screen, what numbers would I write?

    2) To make the correction in lilo, and not just in grub, what file would I change?

    3) The screen(s) before I get to choose between Windows 98 and Linux, is still messed up. If I choose Windows 98, all the splash screens are messed up. How could I correct this? When the computer is first turned on, and it looks for the hard drives, etc., everything is OK. Then after that, it is not correct. Even if I go into BIOS, that whole page is off center and too large. In what file do I need to add the vga "code"?

Thanks again. I really appreciate your help.

  12. I am trying to set up an ADSL modem, and I need to set up the Makefile to point to the kernel source. Only one problem, I do not know where it is, or what it would look like if I saw it!! I am using Mandrake 9.2. Would someone tell me where this source is. As an example, the Makefile states that it might be in /usr/src/linux/include. I need to change this to point to the kernel source.

    Thanks.

  13. Qchem, thanks for the reply. I was not able to answer sooner because, as I said, I was going to install Mandrake 9.2. Which I did. Then after I was able to resolve some things, I tried what you advised. Unfortunately, it did not work. Is there something else that I could try? Thanks.

  14. I have a new Unicorn ADSL modem, but am unable to understand what I am suppose to do!! :) Would someone be so kind as to interprete the instructions for me.

    The read me file says:

    INTRODUCTION:

The software for the UNICORN ADSL PCI card consists of two loadable drivers,

the unicorn_atm.o and unicorn_pci.o. The unicorn driver is a standard Linux

ATM driver, that performs segmentation and reassembly (SAR) and flow control.

The unicorn_pci driver contains the ADSL modem software and hardware related

functions. It has been tested with the Linux 2.4.x kernels. Note that to use

PPPoE, PPPoA or RFC2684 protocols, the kernel may need to be patched.

    COMPILATION:

To compile the drivers, unzip and untar the file. In the unicorn directory you

will find the two subdirectories unicorn_atm and unicorn_bus.

You may compile the drivers based on the include files in the kernel source

or standard kernel include files. Set the variable KERNELDIR in the Makefile's

to point to your kernel sources if the first option in chosen.

If you choose the latter, you may need to copy the contents of the kernel

    source "include/net" directory into "/usr/include/net/".

Go into these subdirectories and do a "make" and a "make install".

If the compile option "USE_HW_TIMER" is set, the performance is increased,

    but the CPU load increased.

Use the same compiler as you use when compiling the linux kernel. The driver has

    been tested using gcc-2.96, gcc-2.95.2, gcc-2.91.66 and gcc 3.0.3.

    INSTALLATION:

To start the ADSL software, do a "modprobe unicorn_pci". Check in the syslog that

the drivers are started OK. The ADSL line should come up automatically. The status

can also be checked using the "proc" interface (/proc/net/atm/UNICORN\:0".

SHOWTIME in the log or in the status means that ADSL connction is up and ATM cells

    may be transmitted and received.

Depending on your network setup, you will need additional software as with any other

ADSL ATM card. For bridged ethernet (RFC2684), the br2684.o module and brctl is needed.

For PPPoE, any pppoe client over the bridged interface (nas0) should work

(Roaring Penguin pppoe client has been tested).

The scripts directory contains some example startup scripts.

Bridged (RFC2684) and PPP over Ethernet:

Depending on your kernel, you may need to patch the kernel and enable the option

"RFC1483/2684 Bridged protcols" under "Networking options". Also ATM support needs

    to be enabled.

Also the user space daemon "brctl" is needed. Instructions on how to apply the

patch and the brctl and patch sources can be found at http://www.zoftware.org/adsl-pppoe.

    PPP over ATM:

For PPP over ATM, the module pppoatm.o is needed, together with the pppd plugin

pppoatm.so and a version of pppd that supports plugins.

Currently version ppp-2.4.0b2 supports PPPoATM plugins. A patched version ready for

PPPoATM can be found at http://www.sourceforge.net/.

    PPPoATM specific pppd options:

llc-encaps: use LLC encapsulation for PPPoATM

vc-encaps: use VC multiplexing for PPPoATM (default)

    MODULE PARAMETERS:

Some ADSL paramters can be controlled by setting the moule paramters.

    unicorn_pci.o:

    --------------

ActTimeout: Timeout in ms on the duration of the activation state.

ActivationMode: This parameter sets in what mode the ADSL modem should be activated.

ANSI mode is 1, G.lite is 2, G.dmt is 4 and MULTI mode is 3.

If you know what mode your DSLAM operates in, use this mode. If not select either

    ANSI or MULTI mode.

DownstreamRate: The maximum downstream rate in Kbit/sec.

AutoActivation: Set this to 1 if you your ADSL modem to start auotmatically (default 1).

DebugLevel: To debug the driver, set this to a value different from 0 and enable DEBUG

    when compiling.

MswDebugLevel: 0 - High level, all traces enabled, 1 - Medium level, info and warnings

enabled, 2 - Low level, only warnings and errors are traced.

LCD_Trig: Persistency time (in msec) of Loss of Cell Deliniation defects before

    disorderly shutdown (15000 default).

LCD_LOF_Trig: Persistency time (in msec) of Loss of Signal and Loss of Frame defects before

    disorderly shutdown (5000 default).

TrainingDelay: Delay in msec used in training sequence. Default 80.

useRFCFixedRate: If 1, rate adaptive disabled. To use with ECI DSLAM in ITU mode.

_no_TS652: If set to 1, enable gain table for use without TS652.

    unicorn_atm.o:

    --------------

mac_address: If this is specified, the bridged ethernet (RFC2684) will use this

mac (ethernet) address instead of a randomly generated address. Specified as a

12 character ASCII string of hexadecimal numbers.

atmready_timeout: The time in seconds to wait for ADSL link up when opening the ATM

    socket (default 20 seconds).

DebugLevel: Set this if you need to debug the driver.

    DIV:

mswtest contains a simple program to start/stop and get statistics from the ADSL card.

Depending on your distribution, you may need to install atm support (atm-2.4.0) to

    compile this program.

    RELEASE NOTES:

(I cut this part out. Kieth)

    IMPORTANT USB NOTES:

For USB to work correctly, I recommend using kernel 2.4.22 or later, since a lot of bugs has

been fixed in the UHCI and OHCI drivers since early 2.4 kernel releases.

If you have a 2.4.21 kernel (Mandrake 9.1 or 2.4.21-xx) you need to patch the

usb-uhci and usb-ohci drivers to avoid a freeze when starting the unicorn_usb_xxx module.

Copy the patches to the linux source directory and do:

    patch -p0 < usb-uhci.patch

    patch -p0 < usb-ohci.patch

There is a reference to the Makefile, so I am including it below.

    #

    ## Makefile for UNICORN ADSL Modem

  15. I have a mouse! Thanks. I installed the cursor themes, as you mentioned. This gave me a cursor at times. Then while in Mandrake Control Center, under System, that I could "Choose the display manager". I choose XDM instead of KDM, which then gave me a "visible" mouse. Thanks.

  16. Well, I made sure there was a / in front of dev, but still no luck. I wrote my X86Config-4 file exactly like yours. I also unpluged the other usb devices, rebooted, but nothing. I was booting in lilo, so I changed to grub. I was using KDE desktop, so I changed to gnome. Still, there is no mouse. I went into Mandrake Control Center and changed to a 2 button standard mouse. Any other ideas I could try? Thanks.

  17. No mouse again! I just installed Mandrake 9.2, and I was not able to get the mouse working. Actually, it works, I just can't see it! It changes the icon colors when it passes over them, so it is usable, "sorta". I had the problem with Mandrake 9.0 and 9.1, but was able to get it working by doing an upgrade with Mandrake 8.2 (without installing anything). Anyway this time I can't get it working. I would appreciate any help so I can see it. My XF86Config-4 file reads:

    Section "InputDevice"

    Identifier "Mouse1"

    Driver "mouse"

    Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"

    Option "Device" "dev/psaux"

    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

    EndSection

    I also tried (without success):

    Section "InputDevice"

    Identifier "Mouse1"

    Driver "mouse"

    Option "Protocol" "PS/2"

    Option "Device" "dev/mouse"

    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

    Option "Buttons" "5"

    EndSection

    Thanks for the help.

  19. I'm really not sure it's actually called a splash screen. But when linux is loading, or starting, there are various lines telling you what the program is doing. Well, that "page" is so large, that the last line is below the monitor screen. Also, the margin on the left is way too large.
