  1. Ubuntu logo sucks, default colour scheme sucks, gnome sucks and I don't like their superuser management. Besides I got Gnome artefacts while running KDE on it.

Until the Kubuntu is ready, there is nothing in it for me, except of synaptic which I love, but synaptic is also in other distros (Libranet for example)

    ---

Now that I've finished sounding like a little, annoyed kid I want to say, that I need it to run KDE flawlesly. Ubuntu is nice, but for a Gnome user and I hate Gnome.

    ---

Besides I'm used to Mandrake and like it quite much, I see no reason to change distros, but apt-get (synaptic) and MDK is a bit too bloated for me, but.. I can cope with it, I like Mandrake.

  2. umm, Kweather has always worked for me.

But there is a little trick that must be done (at least for my system) the first time you use Kweather. You apply it, fill in your weather station, then -remove- it. Then apply it again. It should work then.

    --------

That information is there by using Superkaramba with a modified minimax version 2 (kde-look.org) theme.

    http://rpm.pbone.net has .rpm

  3. I got a simmilar problem. But it can be gotten to work (it works for me).

This is what I did and maybe you should too:

    1. su root (terminal)

    2. log out of X (init 3)

    3. run fglrxconfig, follow the steps

    4. run mcc and choose your monitor (fglrxconfig generated a dirty xorg.conf file)

    5. with emacs (or simmilar) open your /etc/x11/xorg.conf file

    6. scroll down to the monitor section and scan for anything that is not related to your monitor (hint. watch out for sony valyo or smthing simmilar)

    7. delete that

    8. see that everywhere it is monitor0, display0 and screen0

    9. if there is a different number, change it to 0

    10. scroll to the graphics card section and delete any other card (if there is such) (hint. VGA), leave only ATI

    11. save file

12*(optional) sacriface a goat to linux gods

    13. $kde and see if it works (if x loads)

    -----

    If X has loaded then:

    14. in a terminal: fglrxinfo and glxgears

p.s. on fglrxinfo you should get smthing like this:

    $ fglrxinfo

    display: :0.0  screen: 0

OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.

OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9000 DDR Generic

    OpenGL version string: 1.3.4893 (X4.3.0-8.10.19)

  4. Hello!

I'm using XMMS 1.2.10 and I've tried several musepack versions, but every time I try to play an .mpc file xmms instantly crashes. I noticed this after updating to KDE 3.3, but I don't believe I have played .mpc files in this installation of MDK at all, so I don't think it's related to the new version of kde.

I've played .mpc files in the past and had no problems with .mpc files.

    Any suggestions?

  5. While installing ati drivers I had an error, but that's no surprise for me.

So I had to handrewrite the xorg.conf file to suite my monitor, but that's no big deal.

What I'm grateful for is to Swerver for his xorg walkthrough.

It was so painless with thacs sources that it was wonderful.

A few days ago I tried to manual install xorg 6.8 , but only got annoyed,

    now I have xorg 6.8! :)

    thanx again, Swerver

    $ glxgears
    12004 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2400.800 FPS
    12145 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2429.000 FPS
    12144 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2428.800 FPS
    12137 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2427.400 FPS
    12068 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2413.600 FPS

And this is with my ancient Radeon 9000 Pro!!

  6. So, what's wrong with using the provided source package? Why do you need an rpm?

I just placed a shortcut to home/user/software/thunderbird/thunderbird on my taskbar

and I can always launch it from a terminal ./thunderbird

p.s. I'm still using Thunderbird 0.7.3.. does anyone suggest an upgrade to 1.0? :/

0.7.3 does everything for me I need..

  7. Hello!

I have a remote webserver and a home computer.

My webserver on request generates a sql.gz backup file for each individual database on it.

How can I set up in Mandrake (software or some other code) that on scheduled times my home computer with username and password accesses my webserver, requests and downloads the sql.gz file (it's the same URL at all times for an individual database).

It would be good if the program auto renames the sql file by adding a date to it, or at least overwrites the existing backup file.

Is there a program I can use to do this?

    thanx!

p.s. I'm not a programmer so I don't know how to code it myself.

  8. What it really needs is a few strong graphics apps. I know a few designers and they all would love to use Linux if they had Photoshop, Macromedia Suite, etc on Linux.

I use Photoshop through Crossover Office/VMware and Flash through VMWare.

You can say much about GIMP, but it simply isn't suitable for more complex graphic job. I know.

Linux will be there fully for me when I can use my Photoshop and Flash without sluggy emulation. Now it's some kind of a twilight zone (vmwares and wines).

  9. Now, if only it had a more stylish logo. Frankly that fat Tux penguin annoys me.

p.s. I too have no official computed education or anything. Been using computers since 1999 and all that I have learned is from my experience and some FAQ's.

I'm no programmer, but can do a fairly good graphical and webdesigning.

Fully turned to Linux march last year. I had no problems with Windows, all was firewalled, etc, but I began to feel limited by it, frequent restarting and defrag (I have 440gb) was another reason . Tryed a few distros here and there, but MDK seems good for what I need (Desktop).

Now waiting for Libranet 3.0 to be released, because I love apt-get (Synaptic), hate Debian installation and Ubuntu is too Gnome based for me (besides I hate its' logo (which can be rooted out of course)). Frankly, MDK feels too bloated for me and compiling on it is pain. Thus, yes, give me Libranet 3.0!! :P
