Hi there!
I tried 10.2rc2 some weeks ago, but my VMware still didn't support the new 2.6.11 kernel (with all the patches applied), so I returned to 10.1. And though my 10.1 installation is quite up-to-date (as software), some of the new 10.2 features are quite tempting.
So my question is, can I install the "old" 2.6.8 kernel on 10.2 with no worries about some stability issues arising? This is not a test box and I have to do real work with important data on it, so experimenting is not an option at this moment, because I already hear the deadlines coming in.
When VMware starts supporting the new .11 kernel, I'll just do a switch in LILO with no need to reinstall the system.
The thing is unfortunately I need VMware, so I can't really wait ages for the new kernel to be supported.
thanx!

messy, messy, messy..

I agree with others that for some this might be useful, but not for the majority, myself included.

(man, I wasted my 1,000th post for THIS?!)
(aaw, a 1000th post for me?! thanx!! )

Or you might be also interested in VMware or Win4Lin
I use VMware when using Dreamweaver and FlashMX

And I'm sure _someone_ would've noticed that before we shipped
I heard NASA say the same when they confused centimetres for inches in some ESA made components. And ESA when they forgot to turn on one out of two transmitter channels in their Titan probe. ;)

I'd say that xorg-server is critical component

I just pronounce as it sounds in my native language. Don't stress myself with such trivial things as official soundings.

An unrelated (sort of!) question.
For how long will 10.1 continue to be supported (as official updates)? I want to skip out 10.2, because I have perfectionised 10.1 for my needs as it is now.

I have installed 'unrar' and unpack rar files using Ark.

Can someone please tell me what is this XBOX support?
And why would anyone need to install Linux on an Xbox?

aaw, c'mon, that penguin is the best I like in the new release.
not because I think there is nothing better, but simply because that penguin is awesome!
ha! I changed my avatar picture! :woops:

the current version docs are probably a club member only feature..

hmm, thanx
is it probable that mdk could become unstable if I use the 2.6.8.1-24 kernel instead of 2.6.11 ?
(I need that older kernel)
or are the cooker changes related to the new kernel?
-
You are right about that mcc, I agree.
p.s. My version of KDE is newer than that of 10.2 :P
p.s. my special extremely Linux non-friendly flash card reader didn't work on 10.2 too, but I didn't tinker with the configs much, so maybe I could get it to work on 10.2
thanx!

Can someone please tell what are the biggest benefits/changes in 10.2?
I had 10.2rc2 installed for some 4 days or so, but didn't notice any ermmm noticable difference from 10.1 apart from some nonessential changes in mcc
p.s. I very like that crazy penguin face. I'm considering making it my boot background on 10.1 (with 2005 text changed to 10.1)

I already tried 10.2rc2, but I installed back to 10.1, because the 10.2 kernel is not yet supported by VMware (and I need vmware), so my plan is to skip 10.2 and wait for the next Mandriva release.
p.s. I don't want to install an older kernel on 10.2 because I fear stability issues and stability is quite important for me because of all the shitload of data on my hd's.
As for the apps.. I have installed Gimp-2.2 and KDE-3.4 on 10.1, so I don't need 10.2 for that (I know, it has KDE3.3.2, but also xorg by def.)

which potatoes are better? hard or soft-cooking ones?
Damn it! Now I'll have to think on that for the rest of the day. I got your point though.
Can I still install usual rpm packages just by clicking on them or through a terminal using a command like 'urpmi <package name>'?
-
Since I have never used apt-rpm, my question to you -> is it better than urpmi?
Is there any good resource where package managers are compared?
(don't google, only if you know)
-
I'm nervous about the technical side of it. Anyone has a link where that apt-rpm is reviewed?
-
I had to change back to 10.1 from rc2 due to the kernel not supporting my VMware (the other way around actually) and I was afraid to run the new mdk on an older kernel than it was designed for. I need a stable system.
-
Besides, to all the people worried about 'cutting edge', nobody prohibits you to keep your os cutting edge.
I have Gimp-2.2, lates xorg, and KDE 3.4 . How much more cutting edge you want to be?
And this is on 10.1 OE

I agree with arctic here. It seems more like a thought out plan than chaotic action.

I've noticed that we always tend to see a bright side even if the system is almost, but not quite fully toast.
