  1. Well, the problem was that FC didn't detect my laptop wide screen correctly and didn't offer resoltuions I needed.

Hacking xorg didn't fix the problem, because it was a chip bios problem.

So I found out on the net that there is a special script (915 resolutions) that fixes my problem.

Unfortunately it had to be launched in a no X environment.

Anyway, because of a problem with wifi I installed Mandriva ONE 2007 on my laptop and upon resolution selection it offered me to automatically install 915 resolutions and set it up to launch it every time before X upon boot.

So my solution in this case is to run Mandriva ONE instead of Fedora Core 6 on my laptop. :D

  2. hi, I have an Acer 5610 laptop with FC6

I installed the drivers from ATrpms and the network manager found my wlan card,

but when trying to connect to activate the card/network config, I get this error

Determining IP information for eth1... failed; no link present. Check cable?

Is it a problem with my wifi network or the card?

Please help, just two days with this laptop and I haven't tried to connect anything else to my wifi network, because I have nothing else to connect....

  3. ok, thanks.

but then help a network newbie (my first Linux network with a router I'll try to set up) and point me to a page which explains how to set up "any other router"

    thanx!

  4. Hi,

    I just bought a Linksys wrt54gl router

and it says that in order to install it I have to insert the included cd and run it.

Problem - it's a darn .exe file and won't launch on Linux, gives me an error when I try to launch it with Wine.

So, any of you installed such a router on a Linux only network?

    Thanks!

  5. Solarian: You need to read what I wrote about your modem....

You need to check (and online forums are the best place) that your actual modem isn't crippled to prevent more than one user/machine... I expect your information will be in Latvian so its best you search ....

Thanks for the advice, but as it is now, two PCs through a switch are connected to the modem - my and my sister's,

so I don't think it'll be a problem to replace the switch with a router and add one more computer through wireless to it.

  6. One other network related, but a bit different question.

I'd like to control my main pc through laptop over LAN (not internet), something like Remote Desktop, but I want it secure.

Nothing fancy, just to control my sound system.

    What do you suggest?

  7. Thanks all for the valuable input!

    As for Linksys Linux support:

As of January 2006, most third-party firmware is no longer compatible with version 5 of both the WRT54G and the WRT54GS. The amount of flash memory in the version 5 devices has been reduced to 2mb, too small for current Linux-based third-party firmware. (See table above for information on identifying the version based on the serial number printed on the bottom of the unit, and on the outside of the shrink-wrapped retail box.)

Some users have succeeded in flashing and running a stripped down but fully functional version of DD-WRT called 'micro' on a version 5 WRT54G.[12][13] An easier method not requiring any disassembly of the device has since been devised for flashing v5-v6 to DD-WRT.[14]

To support third-party firmware, Linksys has re-released the WRT54G v4, under the new model name WRT54GL (the 'L' in this name allegedly stands for 'Linux').

    So I'll be buying 'WRT54GL'

  8. You could install shorewall or something on your computers to stop anyone accessing them.

That's actually a good plan, but how to make my computers not restricting access to each other? :D

I'm really sorry if these questions seem dumb, but I really have no experience with networking. :(

  9. Thanks, but what about LAN, my two computers and my sister not getting into my computers?

I've made a more precise schematic of what I have in mind:

    [ADSL modem]

    |

    ethernet

    |

    [wireless router__________________]

[internet connection for all with access]---------cat5---------[sister's win pc, no access to my computers through LAN]

    |

    |----------------wireless LAN----------[my laptop]

    |.......................................................|

    [my pc]--------wireless LAN------------|

Also I want that nobody else except these computers can connect to my wireless internet, if I haven't given them access, i.e., don't want neighbours using it, because my connection is slow as it is.

  10. It's managing internet connection on its' own.

The modem is plugged in to a little flat box (wow, this sounds stupid!) which separates the land line phone traffic line from the DSL connection.

Then it on its own just gives out ethernet connection to anything that is connected to it.

  11. So, to make it clear:

    1. Can I switch a wireless router to my ADSL modem;

    2. The router enables internet connection for the computers on the network;

    3. The router makes it possible to make a private LAN between (my) two of the computers in the network, i.e., my sister doesn't have access to my computers through the LAN?

  12. Thanks!

Now I'll try to understand what you just said, much is new to me. :D

I don't think I can replace the ADSL modem, because it's some special kind provided by the phone/internet provider company.

Do you know anything about AirLive wireless routers?

They seem cheap and are available in this region.

Other available ones are: GIGA-BYTE, D-LINK, Linksys, A-LINK (and belkin)

    What about this: http://www.airlive.com/WT-2000AP.htm

  13. Hi,

first I have to inform that I'm a total newbie when it concerns local networks, because I've never had more than one box at a time.

But in a week I'll be getting an Acer laptop (will put FC or Mandriva on it) and I need some advice in making a home LAN.

My current setup is such: Internet ADSL connection which is connected to a modem and further down the way the connection by computers is understood as LAN.

One step down from the ADSL modem I have a basic switch from which go two cat5 cables: one to my box, the other to my sister's on the other side of the house.

The modem and router are in my room.

So the idea is to leave cat5 going to my sister's computer and put a wireless router/hub/whatever it's called to divide the internet connection between my two computers (pc + laptop) as well as link my computer and laptop into a private wireless LAN.

I need two kinds of advice here:

    1. What hardware should I get?

    2. How do I make that setup work software side, i.e., do I have to run a server or will the wireless router do the job for me?

In short, I need to make this work:

    [internet connection]

    |

    [router]---------cat5---------[sister's win pc]

    |

    [wireless]-----------[my laptop]

    |......................................|

    [my pc]--------LAN--------|

Or maybe this is possible? =>

    [internet connection]

    |

    [wireless router]---------cat5---------[sister's win pc]

    |

    |---------------------------[my laptop]

    |...................................|

    [my pc]--------LAN--------|

    help? :)
