  1. Okay, I thought I could do it "on demand," but guess not. Thanks.
  2. I usually have to close Kontact and reopen it to get mail. If I reduce Kontact then expand it I can't get new mail until I close it and reopen. Have any of you experienced this situation and how do I solve it?
  3. I'm running Mandriva 10.2, with both Adobe Reader and KPDF installed. When I "click" on a PDF file I get nothing and the browser (Firefox) freezes. I have Adobe loaded, and I assume that the site with the pdf file will fine Adobe. What am I not doing or doing wrong?
  4. I'm still at the elementary stage of learning my around Mandriva. I installed "Backup" off the CD's, and the install was normal but I'll be darned if I can find it. It's not on the desk top, not in "Home" and not on the task bar, nor is it in the Menu that I can see. Where will a newly install program logically go? [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
  5. Okay, I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes. One more thing: What's the best/good Linux backup program? I just partitioned the Iomega and found the backup program in the MCC, and everything works fine. Thanks for your help.
  6. Thanks. I am working with Kontact. I'll follow your lead and see how it goes.
  7. The docs I refer to are on the installation CD. Here's what it says about partitioning: Partitioning Iomega does not recommend or support multiple partitioning of Iomega HD external hard drives. I couldn't fine the reference I thought I had read about Linux incompatibility. However, I talked with their support and was told that, yes, Iomega external, USB, hard drive can be used with Linux but that their software does not support it. I asked if I could partition the drive so that I can backup WinXP on one partition and Linux on the other. Again, he said yes. He asked it Mandrake supported NTFS, and if so, then both windows and linux could be backed up in different folders. So, what's the best way to manage the Iomega HD, to that I can back up both WinXP and Mandriva? By the way, Iomega has the best support service I've encountered. They have a "live chat" service 24hr/day, 7 days/week. I've used it a few times and it's excellent.
  8. I'm going crazy trying to put my address into four or five groups or address books, to I can use the filtering to pull up the category I want. I can do it by editing the contact and selecting a category. My problem is that some how I'm getting multiple entries of the same contact and when I try to delete the extra entries I lose all those particular contacts. Is that clear as mud? Anyway, it is DRIVING ME CRAZY!! I've tried reading the "Help" documentation but that tells me very little.
  9. According to Iomega docs, their external drive is not compatible with Linux (or perhaps it is their software). I see others using the Iomega external HD with Linux. Iomega docs also advise against partitioning the drive. Does anybody have advice on how I might be able to use the Iomega for back-ups and a recommendation for a good Linux back up program?
  10. I have Knemo up and running. After closing and reopening Linux, Knemo loaded. I've configured it and all is fine.
  11. I feel like an idiot. . . I downloaded Knemo, installed it and now I can't find it to activate. According to the down load site, it has to be started in Control Center/KDE Components/Service Manager. Okay, but I can't fine those directories in the control center. I'm one of those who needs ABC instructions.
  12. Where do I get KNEMO? Guess I should do a "Google."
  13. I have just one network which is a standard dial up ISP. Where or how do I select the network for monitoring? I don't see a "setting" option on the network monitoring window.
  14. When I click on "Monitor Network" on the modem icon, it doesn't read either the sending or receiving speed or the connection time. There must be a setup or enable switch someplace. How do I get it to work?
  15. I knew it was a dumb question, but yes that's what I want to do: view headers on the server, down load what I want and delete the unwanted. I do that with Pocomail on Windows. What throws me is that I am seeing the content with IMAP on Kmail. That's okay if I'm not actually downloading the content. It comes in so fast, that I feel it is on the server and has not be downloaded. My question seems to go in circles Checking server headings before downloading is how I eleminate spam and potential infected email's.
  16. I started out with Mandrake 8 point something, buying directly from the Mandrake store. I purchsed three or four that way until I found CheapBytes. I didn't occur to me to question how they were selling so cheaply but then I guess I figured if one could download Mandrake free, why couldn't CheapBytes. I'm on dial-up, too, so it's not feasible to download. I even joined the Club one year because of some promotional deal. So, that said, my main question revolves around my inability to undate my Mandriva. When I tried to do so on the Mandriva site, I got the message that I would have to upgrade to an "Official" program. Apparently, my problem is internal to my program set up. I've done a little research for a solution but have not understood what it is I need to do. While I have purchased several versions of Mandrake, I am still a neophyte because, I have always dual booted with Windows and have relied on Windows more the Linux. When I bought my last computer two or three years ago it came loaded with Win XP, which has worked flawlessly. I don't really need Linux but I like to mess around and there are some things I really like about Linux, even though I have more set up problems. Sorry for the long windage. If you have suggests for how I can update my program, (10.2) I'd appreciate the info.
  17. I purchased 10.2, 6-CD, package from CheapBytes. This, apparently, is not an "offical" copy of Mandrake 10.2. What does that mean, and how do I upgrade to an Official version? Does that mean buying a box? I guess I have to have an Official package to get updates to the software.
  18. I configured Kmail for imap to access mail on my ISP server before downloading. It's working fine (I think) but I'm not confident that I'm actualling seeing email on the server before it's downloaded to my computer. What I want to do is view email on the server in order to delete unwanted mail before downloading. I think that's what I'm getting but, as I say, I'm not confident and don't know how to verify that action. So, that's my question: Is what I'm seeing actually mail on the server? Is that a dumb question or what? I'm obviously a newbie at this game.
  19. I recently installed Mandrivalinux 10.2 on a Window's drive and I can't get the correct times on both Linux and Windows. I have to reset the clocks whenever I switch from one to the other. Anybody have a solution? [moved from Installing Mandrake by spinynorman]
  20. Here's the latest. . . I entered the rpm -- rebuild (file) on the consol command line and it produced a number of linds of code. I saved that to a text file, not knowing what else to do with it. I tried the root command, again, and go the same error message which included "User luisgm. . ." which is not my root password. I guess I'll take the advice to get a hardware modem. If I can get one delivered for under $20, that's a low-cost solution. I do, however, enjoy a challenge. If you have any further suggestions on getting this Redhat driver installed, I'll give it a try. I'll be gone tomorrow through Monday, so it'll be next week before I can do anything, but thanks again for all your help.
  21. Still no-go. I got the message: "Installing (file name)." Then, "Warning user lui sgm does not exist - using root," and "error unpacking archive failed on file/user/src/RPM/SOURCES (file name)" and finally: "(file name) cannot be installed." This suggests that the file is not readable in Mandrivalinux, or I don't have the file in the right folder or something of that nature. This file was written for Redhat, as I mentioned earlier. More suggestions? I really appreciate your time and patience.
  22. I got there but rpm wouldn't install it. I got the message: "you probably didn't want to install it on your computer (installing would allow you to make modifications)." I went ahead and clicked on "Install" but then gave a message "unable to register rpm file." (I think that was the message. I tried various things so I may have the messages mixed up.) I then went to the terminal and tried putting in the command you suggested, in root, but it would execute the command. I'm not sure I wrote the command properly but tied it a couple of time. Any ideas?
  23. Well, I may be in luck. There are two files on the floppy. The first seems to be a label, only. It's "bcm42123-source." It's size is 0. The second file is "bcm4212-source/BCM-3.4.19-6.src.rpm." It's size is 504,445. So I guess it is an rpm file. Now, do I go to the command line and enter "rpm -ivh bcm4212-source/BCM-3.4.19-6.src.rpm" I'll try it a see what happens. Thanks for your help and if you have more instructions, let me know. Jerry
  24. I'm so new I don't know whether it's an RPM, but the file type is .tar.gz. Does that say anything? Also, how do I install it? Jerry
  25. I have a "win" modem in a Dell Dimension 2300 box. Dell provides a Red Hat linux driver for this modem (BCM V.92 56k) which I have downloaded and put on a floppy. First: Will a Red Hat driver work in Mandrivalinux 10.2? Secondly, how do I install the driver? I'm a complete newbie so I need step-by-step instructions. I'll appreciate any help you can give me. Lastly, if a Red Hat driver won't work, do I have any alternative other then buying a new modem? Jerry
