  1. I'm on dial-up, unfortunately. I'll give it another try and try the Netherlands. Thanks
  2. Well, I would if I could get to the list of sources. I just spent another 2 plus hours, downloading something (?) to the "Main" heading by adding "security team, key, which I probably shouldn't have done, When I go to "System/configuration/Packaging/Mandrakelinux Update," I get the error message. When I first started using the Update, it worked fine. I changed sources a couple of time when I was having problems and sometimes the "updating" worked. I don't understand why after twice downloading between two and three hours of data, I don't have anything to show for it. I followed the Easy-Urpmi explicitly. This is getting too frustrating. Obviousely, I'm doing something wrong. I just don't understand why I'm having so much trouble with Mandriva (linux); I'm getting close to dumping it. Pardon my ranting. Jerry
  3. I guess I've screwed up my media manger. Following direction of an earlier post I went to Easy-Urpmi. First I deleted the old headers on console (per EU instructions) then inserted the command lines prompted by EU. After about 2 1/2 hours of downloading, I went to media manager and only the "main" header is showing. When I go to "Add" or "Update" both return: "HTTP range error or the website is may not be available. Try later." I've tried numerous times over the last couple of days. I doubt that the server can be that overloaded so something else must be amiss. Any tips?
  4. Thanks for the info. I'm perusing the site. I just tried updating, again, and go this message: libkdecore4=30000000:3.3.2-123mdk needed by (installed) libkdecore4-devel-3.2.2-123mdk. I can't find such a file to installl. What's the "=30000000" all about? Jerry
  5. Updating RPM's has been a problem ever since I install Madriva 10.2. Sometimes it works as it should and at other times I get messages that something is not configures correctly. Now, it is hanging on me. I even had to reboot to clear it. Can I un-install the media manager and reinstall it? Or, is there a way can fix it without going to that extreme? What do you think is happening? I downloaded update source files okay, but at the end of the download, it hung on me.
  6. Thanks. . . that did it. Jerry Marked the thread Solved - Artificial Intelligence
  7. I have tried installing a Quanta tarball, without success, and in the process downloaded Quanta twice. Now, apparently, I have some messed up files. I want to delete all of it, which is in my Home directory. Can I simply open the various folders and files and hit delete? Or, is there a better way of "cleaning" these files from my Home directory? These files do not appear in the control center. Jerry
  8. I've been trying to update Quanta. I've downloaded the latest version of Quanta but I can't get it installed. I seem to be missing ./configure script. So, I've tried updating KDE files and I keep getting an error message saying the media manager is not properly configured, or the service is busy and try later. Once-in-awhile, I am able to make it into the update window and do some updates but most of the time I can't. What do you suppose is happening and what should I do to get the config file working? I've tried searches here and find a number of updating problems but I haven't found a solution. Back to installing Quanta. . . I'm following the instructions in the Quanta read file and nothing seems to work as it's supposed to. Apparently there is supposed to be a Makefile.cvs but it doesn't show up when I search the Quanta files. I'd appreciate it if somebody good give me some steering on this. I'm running Mandriva 10.2 Jerry
  9. Chris. . . Thanks so much. That was easy!! I've been battling this for several days, searching these posts, trying all the suggestions I could understand but without success until your post. I'm saving your process for future reference. Jerry
  10. I've researched this subject which seems to be a common one, but haven't yet be able to make an install. Here's what I've done: as root, I loaded the installer and made it through to the path and folder selection: /user/bin/firefox (Firefox1.0.2 is installed in /user/bin/mozilla-firefox, but I couldn't overwrite it so I created a "firefox" folder). When I proceeded with the install I got the error message: "fatal error [-618] couldn't open xpistub." So, my questions are: where should I be installing and how do I do it? Should I be using /user/share/firefox? I'm running MDK 10.4 Jerry
  11. Thanks for your help. I got my printer working after finding the print manager in the menu. It was under my nose all the time. I just didn't go deep enough into the /System/Configuration/. I'm a slow learner. Jerry
  12. Finally. . . got my printer working. Thanks to all for the help. I found the solution right under my nose in Menu/System/Configuration/KDE/Periferals/Printers/Jobs. I don't know, however, what the original problem was but in the process of trying to fix it over the course of three or four days I cued up 41 print jobs, I guess the memory got clogged.
  13. This may be a software question and I've addressed it on that forum without finding a solution. I have a Canon i560, that works with Turboprint, or did until a few days ago. I'm Mardriva 10.2 limited edition. I have no idea why the printer stopped working but I've racked up 41 print jobs trying to get it to work. I can find no way to delete all those print jobs. Cups doesn't recognize my printer. And I've not found a utility for managing the print jobs. Turboprint doesn't seem to have the facility. I did find one option by going to http://localhost:631, which listed all 41 print job with the option to delete. The problem is a user name and password must be used to take action. My "localhost" use name and password don't work. Apparently I have to have a user name and password issued by ESP (Easy Software Products) which I guess is part of the CUPS organizatiion. I did get a UN & PW from Cups but it won't work on http://localhost:631. It just seems unreasonable that there is not a plain and simple way to edit the print jobs. How do I delete all those print jobs? I have already tried going to the Configure Your Computer/hardware/printer but could not see a way to manage print jobs. Also, I'm a newbie with no experience using a terminal program. Jerry
  14. Thanks for your responses. If I'd do more document reading I could figure this things out. Jerry
  15. I'm beginning to feel like a pest but I find Linux quite confusing. I don't know whether I installed KWatchGnuPG early on or whether it was loaded when I install Mandriva but it keeps popping up every time I start a browser. It doesn't work, however, and I'm not at all sure what it does. I get the message to "Please install KWatchGnuPG someshere in $PATH. Okay, but I don't know how to do that. How do I initiate the command and where is a logical place to put it. The app is in Home, currently. Jerry
  16. I ran lsof and couldn't find /dev/par0. I did find a number of "parallel" notations including this one: parallel 17166 root 3w CHR 6,0 5709 /dev/lp0 I will send you all the "paraIlel" notations if that will help but I was afraid of making too large a post. I also found these which I assume are Turboprint files: tpprint 17198 lp cwd DIR 3,5 4096 2 / tpprint 17198 lp rtd DIR 3,5 4096 2 / tpprint 17198 lp txt REG 3,5 593128 626648 /usr/bin/tpprint tpprint 17198 lp mem REG 3,5 1209384 376165 /lib/tls/libc-2.3.4.so tpprint 17198 lp mem REG 3,5 136904 376167 /lib/tls/libm-2.3.4.so tpprint 17198 lp mem REG 3,5 524936 376111 /lib/ld-2.3.4.so tpprint 17198 lp 0r CHR 1,3 820 /dev/null tpprint 17198 lp 1w FIFO 0,5 49362 pipe tpprint 17198 lp 2w FIFO 0,5 49360 pipe Regarding your question about whether I have configured any applications. . . I've been messing around a lot with Kmail trying to configure it (unsuccessfully) so I can download email headers without downloading the messages. And I have download bugs fixes to KDE. I've probably also messed with a few other things trying to learn my way around Mandriva but I don't recall specifics. Any more ideas? Also, how can I configure CUPS to recognize Turboprint? Jerry
  17. Thanks for your response. I'll have to look, then give it a try tomorrow. I'll let you know what happens. Jerry
  18. I hate to say this but I'm getting fed up with Mandriva. It seems that a day doesn't go by that something stops working. This time it's Turboprint. I paid $30 for this program so I can print using my Win printer: Canon i560. I was pleased with the program which worked fine until a couple of days ago. Now, I can't print any thing off Linux apps. The TuboPrint site (ZEDOnet) has no support though there is a operations manual which hasn't helped. The only clue I have is that I get a message that the parallel port is busy but I can't figure out what is making it busy. The printer is the only hardware connected to the parallel port. I've managed to pile up 16 print jobs while trying to make the printer work, and so far I haven't figured out how to cancel those jobs. So, any help, you all can give me will be much appriciated. Are any of you using Turboprint? Jerry
  19. Thunderbird's "Headers Only" works great. I've not found the same option on Kmail or on Opera Mail. In addition spam I delete many emails from friends who foreward jokes and the like. It really ticks me off and some of their Fwd's are huge. Looking at the headers gives me complete control over what I want to download. I'll see what the Kmail people have to say. Jerry
  20. I have Kmail, Thunderbird and Opera Mail. I use PocoMail, on Windows. I'm going to try Thunderbird per Krisi1's comments. I do like Kontact and Kmail. It's simple and straightforward. So, if I could download "Headers only" on Kmail that would make my day. Jerry
  21. I'm still groping for a way to read email headers on the mail server before downloading messages. This has been asked by several people in different ways and I've done searches but have found not solutions. As I recall, when I first used Kmail in Mandrake 8.x, there was an action button for going on the server to look at headers before downloading. I really liked that feature. Then in Windows, I found PocoMail which has the same feature. My ISP does not have IMAP service, so I continue to look for way to see headers on the server using Kmail or any other Linux-based email client. I thought I could do it with Kmail by configuring POP3 filters, but either it doesn't do what I want or I don't know how to configure the filters properly. I will really appreciate your directions to accomplish this or am I just out of luck?
  22. I'm trying to set up POP3 filters so that I can examine email headers before I actually download them. I set up up two filters on "subject" and "from," and set the action for "download later." Now, when I check mail I get the indication of email on the server, but no header and I don't know how to "download later." How does this work?
  23. All of a sudden I can't access my imap server. I know the user name and password are correct because it's been working until just yesterday and I can go on windows/pocomail and access email on the server with no problem. I keep responding to the Kontact error message saying either the username or password is wrong. Then I get the same error message back. I've looked at the tools/settings for Kmail and Kontact and the username and password are correct there. What do you think the problem might be? Jerry
  24. Coincidentally, I did just that: updated Firefox to 1.04, though I didn't delete the old version before updating. I have been able to download a couple of plug-ins including a PDF download file which shows up in the "Extensions" log but I still don't see anything in the /preferences/download/plug-in log, and I am still not able to read a pdf document.. I have both Acrobat Reader and Kpdf installed. I don't see the "addons" function under "Tools" on Firefox, and I've verified that I have version 1.04. I must be overlooking something.
  25. I've tried to get a pdf program plugged into Firefox without success. I get a message that Adobe download is not available. Anyway, I installed Kpdf. Now, how do I get Firefox to recognize it. The plug-in window in Firefox is empty and I don't see a way to get Kpdf "plugged" into Firefox.
