  1. Tried and failed. Still can't boot up, with the same lines on the bottom.
  2. I manage to install Mandrake 10.1 just fine, but when I reboot my PC, it gets less than halfway through loading up and stops. I press ESC to see what's going on, and the final lines on the screen are: [<c0106DCD>] sysenter_past_esp+0x52/0x71 Code: 34 24 e8 bc 4c 5a c7 e9 73 fe ff ff 8d b4 26 00 00 00 00 55 89 e5 83 ec 0c 8b 45 10 85 c0 74 3a 8b 40 04 8b 00 8b 50 64 8b 42 0c <8b> 80 e4 00 00 00 85 c0 74 25 8b 40 0c 85 c0 74 1e 81 c2 c8 00 That's it. Goes no further. Any ideas?
  3. OK, but does anyone know how to fix it?
  4. I'm slowly beginning to use Linux more and more frequently, with Linux solely on my laptop, a desktop system running solely Linux, and dual booting my main system with Windows XP and Linux (all linux installations are Mandrake 9.1). I also have another machine running Windows XP, and that machine streams my radio stations. My question is this: In Windows, I can run multiple instances of Winamp, and control the volumes separately so I can turn up one of my stations and monitor it, then turn it down and turn up the other one and monitor that one. In Linux, I can't seem to do this. If I turn up the volume on one instance of Xmms, it turns up ALL of them. If I turn down the volume, it turns down ALL of them. How do I get around this? This is one of the only things remaining that keeps me booting into Windows more than Linux.
  5. ndeb, That did the trick for me! Sloppy looking install that way, but hey, it's in! Thanks for the help!
  6. I'm trying to install Mandrake Linux 9.0 back on this system after upgrading to a new motherboard, but after the initial screen asking me to either choose options or press Enter, my screen goes blank and the Caps Lock and the Scroll Lock lights on the keyboard start flashing and that's all she wrote. CTRL+ALT+DEL do nothing, the drive stops, no HDD lights to show activity, nothing. Just a hard reset gets it going again. I thought it might have been my CD's, although I had used them previously with no problems. So, I got new copies and tried them, with the same problem. I tried using my Windows XP CD to make sure it wasn't a problem with booting from CD. That worked fine. I then tried my old Red Hat 7.1 disk. That also started everything fine. So, I downloaded the new 9.1 and tried that, and the same thing happened yet again. Any ideas what's going on? 7. Well, I hate to admit to this much inexperience, but what text editor is there for Linux, and how do I use it on a CLI?
  8. I'm using Mandrake 9, installed on Drive D in a dual boot system. System is an Athlon XP2200, with an Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti4600. Until a couple of weeks ago, I had never used Linux at all, so I'm a complete n00b at it. Supplying the drivers sounds best. Thanks!
  9. I've been using Mandrake for a couple of weeks now, and ran into a problem this weekend. While using KDE, I sometimes experience problems of parts of fonts not being visible, broken letters basically. Thinking it could be a graphics driver problem, I downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers for Linux, and installed them. Didn't notice any change, nothing seemed to go wrong, all seemed OK. I then shut down Linux later on and went to WinXP for some gaming. Then , on Saturday, I rebooted the machine back to Linux, and after the screen flickered a couple of times, I was only able to get to a CLI login, no GUI. And I can't get KDE to run. I have no choice but to assume the drivers for the GF4 did it, but have NO idea how to go about fixing the problem. Can anyone assist me with this? I was thinking of just formatting and reloading the Linux partitions, but will doing so screw up the Boot loader that is already on the system? I have to have access to my WinXP installation, and can't risk screwing that up. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  10. I see LICQ in the Start menu already, but when I click on it to run it, nothing happens, it starts to load and then just disappears, without actually running the prog. SO I figured I'd download and install it. Trying to install LICQ on my system, using Mandrake 9, and getting this error: <ome/thundervamp9/tmp/licq-kde-gui-1.2.0a-2.i386.rpm;echo RESULT=$? error: failed dependencies: licq-qt-gui = 1.2.0a is needed by licq-kde-gui-1.2.0a-2 qt >= 2.3.1 is needed by licq-kde-gui-1.2.0a-2 libcrypto.so.2 is needed by licq-kde-gui-1.2.0a-2 libDCOP-gcc2.96.so.4 is needed by licq-kde-gui-1.2.0a-2 libkdecore-gcc2.96.so.4 is needed by licq-kde-gui-1.2.0a-2 libkdefx-gcc2.96.so.4 is needed by licq-kde-gui-1.2.0a-2 libkdesu-gcc2.96.so.4 is needed by licq-kde-gui-1.2.0a-2 libkdeui-gcc2.96.so.4 is needed by licq-kde-gui-1.2.0a-2 libkio-gcc2.96.so.4 is needed by licq-kde-gui-1.2.0a-2 libpng.so.2 is needed by licq-kde-gui-1.2.0a-2 libssl.so.2 is needed by licq-kde-gui-1.2.0a-2 RESULT=1 Anyone know what these files are, where to get them, or how to make LICQ work? I'm new to Linux, and would like to start using it regularly, but there are some apps I just HAVE to have, and ICQ is one of them. Also, what's a good CD Burning prog, and DVD prog? Thanks!
