  2. its working, haha, i just had to put in my installation disc, i guess i was right about nvnet, thanks alot.
  3. well ok i can get to the files that i need to install through gnome or kde, gnome easier. In KDE when I attempt to install, it says binaries cannot be executed. In gnome I get Files already installed. So in gnome I got ot MCC, and I go to NICs and I go through the configure tool. So when I see a list, well, I dont know what to choose. I choose nvnet, that seems reasonable, NVidia networking... but I dont know. But I dont think its working.... thanks for the help so far.
  4. GOt the gui back, just needed to obey case and fiddle with XFdrake attempting to install mobo drivers now.
  5. You need to reinstall video drivers after every kernel upgrade. Don't think you did that, just saying that would be normal. Or possibly you booted off the install CD trying to fix things and that screwed with X ? Reconfigure the X server and these guys will be able to help you to get back up and running. My tip for newbies... stick to installing "RPM" files and also... Just about anything you really need - is on your install CD's (or urpmi and Mandrake sources, which needs to be configured). Anything else, is probably asking for trouble. i dont think I have updated kernel, and there is the possibility of tring to fix off a cd, although i doubt it, because the only problem i was having was the NIC driver... I may have done something... But I doubt it.
  6. do caps matter, i typed xfdrake in root, and it didnt work, i just noticed XF here, so...

  10. I am pretty windows saavy but when it comes to Linux, I am lost in the desert. Story: Have XP Set Up dual boot with Mandrake Linux(9 I believe) Was able to get to GUI Wasnt able to set up driver for internet(most important thinG) New problem: After a long time, I am trying to get back to trying to use linux, but I cant. I got whats the equivalent of a command line, and I do not know how to get to the GUI. is it xstart, if so, i didnt work, it sputtered some thing, and had RADEON(my gfx card on the left). So i guess I need to know how to get back to the gui, and then how to set up my network card. Its built into my MOBO, Asus Nforce2 Delux And any other helpful tips for this poor noob would help alot. You know, how the hell to download and install stuff, If i ever get that far, and other stuff that you think i may need. Thanks
