Lo,
I'm having some trouble getting my bootloader back so i can swich between windows an mandrake 10.
I had mandrake installed, and now i just installed windows xp on an other partition...
Now i cant ge the bootloader back with the rescue option and re install bootloader, and an update doen't work either.
When i try to reinstall bootloader i first get (while mounting partitions) mount:
wrong fs type, bad aption, bad superblock on /dev/hda3
... my boot partition (i can still mount it via console), the it asks me if i want to reinstall bootloader and when i agree it says:
Fatal open /boot/message: no such file or directory
When i try to update i get similar error:
First it takes a while when he is checking /dev/hda5 my root partition, then he reaches the bootloader and he says:
And error occurred no kernel installed.
I press ok and select lil graphical to boot on /dev/hda2 then it says:
An error occured lilo failed: Warning:'/pro/partitions' does not exist, disk scan bypassed Fatal: opeen /boot/message: no such file or directory
Anyone any suggestions? I need to get it back running soon, some deadlines comming up :o
/etc/lilo.config
/dev/hda5 / ext2 errors=remount-ro,,noatime 0 1 /dev/hda3 /boot ex2 ... ... /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat /dev/hda2 /mnt/win_d ntfs /dev/hda6 swap swap sw
there are to windows partitions because dell seems to do this one of tem is very small 30mb or so
lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hd6 ----> shoudnt this be /dev/hda3 map=/boot/map ... message=/boot/messag --->problem line .... image=/boot/vmlinuz label='linux' root=/dev/hda5 ....
if i try to mount hda3 manually it is complaining about a bad super block
when i try to mount /dev/hda3 it says i can't guess file system so i do
mount -t ext2 /dev/hda3 /mnt/hda3
and that gives: zrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda3, or tou many mounted file systems (aren't you trying to mount en extended partition, isntead of some logical partition inside?)
adress of my /dev/hda3 has changed?

hmmm webmin seems a good tool but still no luck
excerpts boot.log:
May 12 13:44:56 chief network: Setting network parameters: succeeded May 12 13:44:57 chief network: Bringing up loopback interface: succeeded May 12 13:44:57 chief network: Bringing up interface eth1: failed
May 12 13:45:09 chief dhcpd: dhcpd startup failed

hmmm ... I honestly think you might wanna abandon the draketools for this.
In my experience they work very well or not at all and the not at all tends to be what yuour doing. I have to admit not trying this in the GUI for a long while.
problem is I might be busy ....
however what you need to get is pppoe-conf.
(Im assuming your comfortable with urpmi and CLI )
I usually use webmin and create the interfaces ....
In your case Id delete them all then restart....
add eth0 and eth1 etc. and set them up .... it takes longer than the wizard does when it works but is faster than trying to sort out the mess when it doesnt
Also ...another option used to be linuxconf. This is now removed from Mandrake becuase its incompatible with the wizards .... BUT its much more flexible....
(p.s. your gnome prob might be NW related)
the first time i ran linuxconf it worked fine and i changed the settings, after that it reported an error it could not start dhcpd ...
so i tried rebooting since i allready had ran the drak wizzard for internet
but linuxconf is freezing on me now when i try "hostname and ip network devices"
btw i have webmin installed but i doesn't accept my normal login and passwd? do i have to set one first somewhere?
it doesn't seem to end...
*update*
ok had to use root login, stupid me :)
-
it could be NW prob. KDe and Gnome both use lots of heavy NW components ....
However .... You can try and replace a few gnome RPMS's and upgrade or remove it and reinstall etc. but Id concentrate on the NW for now.
Once its working it might disappear and even if not you can hardly download consitently until its fixed !
ok but KDE is runnig perfectly ..
but it aint over yet .. the linuxconf is crashing on me know
the first time i changed evryting but then linuxconf reported some error s that it could not start dhcpd, i rebooted and tried again but now simetimes the linuxconf freezes when i try to acces network configuration and sometimes ik can edit settings but then some text disapears
what the hell is going on
*UPDATE*
ok I reinstalled gdm and everything seems to work fine now
-
it looks weird but what if you use a different WM ....
like fluxbox or icewm ?
i.e. is it a gnome prob or an X prob.
It looks like permissions to me but im not a gnome expert ....
you are right iim using fluxbox right now and that seems to work just fine

Lo, I just installed mandrake 10 community yesterday and strange things are happening in X...
When I logon i can open a few things but after a while when i click the button for a gnome-terminal for example it shows up in in my window list "'starting gnome terminal" but then i t just disepears ...
The funny thing is that everything i opened before the time period stays and keeps working, i'm typing in mozilla in that mandrake right now! When i switch tot textual console i can do everything.
Gnome reponds to everything except at opening new things...
I looked at my Xfree86 log and found this:
AUDIT: Wed May 12 10:03:48 2004: 4135 X: client 20 rejected from local host AUDIT: Wed May 12 10:03:48 2004: 4135 X: client 20 rejected from local host AUDIT: Wed May 12 10:03:48 2004: 4135 X: client 20 rejected from local host AUDIT: Wed May 12 10:03:48 2004: 4135 X: client 20 rejected from local host AUDIT: Wed May 12 10:03:58 2004: 4135 X: client 19 rejected from local host AUDIT: Wed May 12 10:03:58 2004: 4135 X: client 19 rejected from local host AUDIT: Wed May 12 10:03:58 2004: 4135 X: client 19 rejected from local host AUDIT: Wed May 12 10:03:58 2004: 4135 X: client 19 rejected from local host AUDIT: Wed May 12 10:04:32 2004: 4135 X: client 17 rejected from local host AUDIT: Wed May 12 10:15:01 2004: 4135 X: client 17 rejected from local host
I swiched back to graphical mode and strted another gnome terminal and went back to log to see what changed .. this is what i found...
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory) (EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOPAN_DISPLAY: Invalid argument (II) Mouse1: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded AUDIT: Wed May 12 10:19:09 2004: 4135 X: client 17 rejected from local host
Do i need apm service?
[edit]
Ok i remember it alll started when i tried gdm instead of kdm and it gave me an x font error, so i think it has to do with xfs.. I found some other users with the same problem while browsing some more forums...
http://linuxquestions.org/questions/showth...5879#post885879
gonna try and upgrade my xfs

Ok this is funny i remove cfg-eth0 from network-scipts in /etc/sysconfig and when i reboot it doesn't work but when go to configuration tool and then to internet stuff without changing anything it works..
but when i don't go there it doens't work ??? strange things going on...
[edit]
woohoo we can edit our posts now :)
does anyone know how the system configuration tool works? what files it makes?
when i click system configuration tool
then I give my root passwoord
internet configuration
make new connection
i select cable
the i select eth1
en without doing anything else after the clicking of the box after eth1, my internet works, so i suppose it creates some file at that point?

Before you go moving the Cable connection to the NIC: Turn OFF the Cable Modem and leave it off for at least 5 minutes. This will Clear the MAC in the cable modem.
I learned this one the hard way. Called the cable ISP and asked.
i know i had to do that a few times for gettin knoppix online...

sorry
repeat (delete the default again with)
route del default
then
route add default 213.189.176.1
THANK YOU! It's working...
Is this setting being saved now or do i have to add to an init script or something else?

Lo,
I have some problems connecting to the internet with mandrake 10(2.6.2-3mdksmp).I have an onboard lan(eth0) wich i like to use for connection with my laptop and realtek networkcard(eth1) witch is connected to my cable modem.
I have a cable connection with brutele in brussels(belgium) and I tried drakconnect with dhcp-client / dhcpxd / dhcpd. .
He seems to find the dhcpserver because when I run the drak wizard for a new connection I get DNS server1 212.68.193.217 and DNS server2 212.68.193.216. and search domain brutele.be.
When i do monitor connections i click connect i see stuff being send and received and the lights on my modem go off and on (send /receive).
So I tried manualy running dhcp-client, then I see some discoveries, requests and offers, its like they miss eachother:
