  1. For your freezing try looking in your bios for Cpu Disconnect Function and set it to disable. On my Abit Nf7-s it's under the Advanced Chipset Features. Most of the Linux distro's I've tried don't like it enabled..exact opposite with Win Xp pro machine locks up if I forget to re-enable when I reboot from Mandrake.
  2. If you still have problems, try doing what I posted here it may be of some help. http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=13343 It worked for me and a few others. The big thing is disabling the cpu disconnect function in your bios, even after installing I freeze up right away if I enable it. Everything else I could enable after installation.
  3. Just out of curiosity, what motherboard is he using ? Does he have his harddrive(s) jumpered as master and slave and not cable select ? Is it on Pata or Sata?
  4. Try going here and use some of these mirrors. http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/ftp.php by right clicking on them and opening in a new window you get an idea on how fast the connection, how busy, and if they're working . I just re-installed today and had all patches ,security and bug fixes as well and the new kernels installed in less than 15 min B)
  5. I forgot to add if you ever need to reinstall Mandrake 10 look here. http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=13343 I posted this at the mandrake club forums as well. Someone used it and said it worked great for them they were up and running in no time. Takes me roughly 40 min to install. I've done it alot trying out different partitions and file systems. In that post I forgot to mention that after installing you should be able to re-enable everything but the Cpu Disconnect Function. It just doesn't seem to get along with Mandrake...Fedora Core and Xandros 2 don't have this issue.
  6. I had the same problem, for me the fix was going in to the bios and under Advanced Chipset Features and change the Cpu Disconnect Function from enabled to disabled. Also if your harddrive's on Sata you might also try changing the Ext-P2P's Discard Time from the default 30us to 1ms. It's located under the Integrated Peripherals tab. If those fail to correct your problem then I'd hazzard a guess that either your mem timings might be too aggressive or a bios update might be in order. Abit released new bios's for all revisions of the NF7 on Monday. I flashed my NF7-s rev 2 board yesterday with the new 24 version and so far so good, fixed the problem of my mouse dissappearing every other re-boot in Mandrake 10. It's one of the main fixes listed and all this time I thought it was user error being as I'm new to Linux. Anyways enough babble I hope this helps. G'luck to you, DarkFoss
  7. Try booting from the second cd then switch back to the first one when prompted...Thats what I had to do.
  8. I had issues with installing 10 ce those problems were fixed in 10 Official how ever new ones appeared here's how I managed to get it installed. I hope this may be of help to others with similar issues. 1. Look at your bios settings for the following : under the advanced bios features look for Apic mode and disable, under the advanced chipset tab look for Enhance Pci Performance and disable also look for Cpu Disconect Function and disable, under the Integrated Peripherals tab look for Ext-P2P Discard time and change the default from 30us to 1ms, exit and save. 2.Press f1 at the install screen and do the nolapic (noapic also if you don't have the ability to turn it off in your bios) and mem=xxxM(xxx being your amount of ram) if your memory's not being properly reported mine was only seeing 896 instead of 1024. 3. You should now be able to get through the partitioning and choosing your packaging. If your experience is like mine you'll have to deal with a few more errors hopefully you won't. 4. If you may get the following error during the post installation screen just before you get to install the bootloader; insmodd'ing module loop failed then the bootloader screen appears but the error will repeat if you try to go on so you'll have to manually specify a kernel using the advanced buttons.(I used Grub here) Select add, linux, hit the advanced tab again and select a kernel from the drop down button then in the last line retype what you've selected so you've got 2 entrys that looks like /boot/vmlinuz. Note not every one will take when you hit next you may get the insmod'ing error again, I repeated the process until I got 2 kernels acknowleged. After you get them showing up hit next and you'll probably get yet another error, something like mknode /dev/usb full cannot continue Sorry it may not be exact since I didn't write that one down. 5. If you got that error hit the reset button and remove the install disk then choose one of the kernels you've made. It should complain about not being unmounted cleanly go through it's fsdisk check and reboot itself. When it does so select the same kernel again it will go through it's check up and find that there were no lost and found directory's created in your partitions and add them you'll then be taken to the single users prompt type in reboot and put in the first install disk. WHEW congrats your almost done. 6. At the install screen hit f-1 and type in linux nolapic(noapic if you can't disable it in your bios) mem=xxxM for whatever your amount of ram and readonly=1 last one's very importent here. 7. When asked to choose if it's an upgrade or an install choose install. Then choose use existing partitions it should show you all the one's you made as well as the mount points in if correct hit next. Here Uncheck formatting any partitions. The install will then check existing packages and ask you for various disks, number depends on what you've installed. You should then be taken to the post install screen. You should now be able to complete the post installation process and fully configure your machine. Note when it installs the bootloader it will install lilo but you'll be able to change that later during the summary as well as make your final adjustments. I also recommend not choosing to Upgrade at this time. I hope this helps others with an Nforce2 board. Also worth noting it properly set up my Nvidia agp and Ati radeon 9700 pro I'm getting over 7000 in glxgears. Abit NF7-s bios 23, Barton 2500@200x11,1g Ozc 3500 ddr, 1 40g Maxtor hd on sata 1 via a sata/pata converter, Antec 550w psu Memorex Duel X-1 ide1 master, Lite-on 52246s slave ide1, Liet-On DVD-rom ide2 master. G'luck, DarkFoss
  9. Thanks for the welcome. I've been browsing here for a few days, you've got a nice friendly forum. Lot's of helpful info and links, I plan on hanging around a bit, and who knows in time I may actually be able to give some help in return :P Quite a difference from the official mandrake forum I posted the same thing there and out of 20 something views not one single comment. <sigh>
  10. Thanks aRTee and bvc for your replys. I did read the errata before but re-read it anyways. I tried all of your suggestions and eventually hit upon a combo that worked in a hacked way. I found a link on another website where someone had posted a bug report that sounded very close to my problems. The bug report had never been answered but it's what helped me devise a way of installing. 1. I formatted with another program other than Mandrake. I used Fedora Core 1 which has no issues with my set-up to set my partitions. I choose the minimal install to make sure the partitions were complete, had errors if I stopped early. I imagine qparted would be faster off the knoppix cd but I'm not familiar enough with the commands...yet 2. Turned off APIC in my bios as well as enhance pci performance and cpu disconnect function those 2 were the cause of freezing during install. Set the ext-p2p discard time from default 30us to 1ms (timings for sata). 3. Popped in the Community Download edition...Note the Powerpack edition will not work here. At the initial screen hit f1 and typed in linux nolapic readonly=1 Start installing note the installer will ask if you want to use the linux partitions hit yes and only format the /root partition, choose your packages. Still get the run_program can't output in //tmp.drakx-stout.12 (mode '>'). error. At that point I hit the reset button and start the install program over choosing upgrade instead of install. With a bit of luck after the upgrade you'll be taken to the post install but at this point you'll have skipped the root password and setup users and start at installing the bootloader. Finish up the install set-up your config, but don't choose to install upgrades. If you do happen to freeze after the bootloader's installed it's ok just hit reset and at the first prompt choose failsafe the kernel will check itself and add the lost and found directories/files??(not sure exactly what it meant have to google later) and reboot itself shutting down properly.Choose failsafe again once the at the failsafe single user screen type in passwrd and set your root password. Reboot. 4. Now finally you can pop in the Powerpack edition again hit f1 and type in readonly=1 start the install choosing install not upgrade. the installer will again ask if you want to use the linux partitions again hit yes at the next screen make sure to uncheck the /root you don't want any partition formats at all. The installer will check for installs and you'll be asked for all 5 cd's then you'll finally see the full post install configurations finish up and enjoy. Pain in the arse but I really do like Mandrake 10 .. Just finished downloading the Official .. I hope that install goes smoothly.. if not I'm sure the above will work yet again
  11. Hello, I can't seem to get Mandrake 10 installed either the CE edition or the 5cd Powerpack. All goes well until after selecting the packages. Once all the disks have been fed I get the same error : an error occured run_program can't output in //tmp.drakx-stout.12 (mode '>'). I've verified the md5sums both the download iso's as well as the burned disks.I've also tried burning as low as 2x with Roxio's Easy CD DVD Creator 6, Nero 5.5 and Alcohol 120, same results. The reason I think it's a bug and not my hardware is after the above error your taken back to the installation menu to select the packages. I've tried various combinations and after awhile it seems to time out and I wind up at a termination screen. Amongst the text is the following : Cannot open font file for fixed 12 at /usr/bin/perl-install/ugtk2.pm line 17 XLib : sequence lost (0x78f5070x6defd) in reply type 0x0! The program runinstall2 recieved an XWindows system error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was ^139'. (Details : seriel 429904 error_code 139 request_code 135 minor_code 7) (note to programmers : normally, X errors are reported asynchronously ; that is you will recieve the error awhile after causing it. To debug your program run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. you can then get a meaningful Backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error () function.) Exited abnormally (EE) FBDEV (0) : FBIOPAW_display : Invalid argument. Sorry for the long post and if some of the above wasn't nesissary. Just trying to be thorough. I haven't seen anyone else post any of the above here or other forums I've looked at. Perhaps it's because of my comps config?
