  1. I did a fresh install of Mandrake 9.2

And I have no control panel or I should say it locks up on the screen.

I go (configure your computer) I am asked for the root password and the panel begins to load and freezes,

I can still run other programs (Mozzila) etc.

But the control Panel window is glued to the screen. ( on top the other programs)

I must log out and back in to kill the window.

  2. No

As I stated before I could always see the files on the DVD drive it's just that RPMDRAKE.

Still wants to see the file in hdc and thats not possible to date.

But I can mnt the cdrom2 either (cd1 or cd2 ) and see the contents.

And I can go into the Mandrake folder in the RPM folder and I can install what ever I want, it tells me of the programs it's dependent on and seems to install all.

And after I checked if mplayer was installed or not and it was, it even worked although I still can't play streaming video yet ( movie trailers and the like).

    Nor can I update Mandrake.

  3. Sorry new to posting I do a lot of reading, just getting use the posting part.

I went to Your website and it's very niicely done.

I went to the config. page.

    and this is the results:

    [hbob@localhost hbob]$ su

    Password:

    [root@localhost hbob]# mkdir /mnt/mdk92iso1

    [root@localhost hbob]# mkdir /mnt/mdk92iso2

    [root@localhost hbob]# mkdir /mnt/mdk92iso3

    [root@localhost hbob]# mount -t iso9660 -o loop /path/to/MandrakeLinux-9.2-17-Download-1.i586.iso /mnt/mdk

    92iso1

/path/to/MandrakeLinux-9.2-17-Download-1.i586.iso: No such file or directory

    [root@localhost hbob]# mount -t iso9660 -o loop /path/to/MandrakeLinux-9.2-17-Download-1.i586.iso /mnt/cdrom2/mdk

/path/to/MandrakeLinux-9.2-17-Download-1.i586.iso: No such file or directory

    [root@localhost hbob]# mount -t iso9660 -o loop /path/to/MandrakeLinux-9.2-17-Download-1.i586.iso /mnt/mdk

    92iso1

Usage: mount -V              : print version

mount -h              : print this help

        mount                    : list mounted filesystems

mount -l              : idem, including volume labels

So far the informational part. Next the mounting.

The command is `mount [-t fstype] something somewhere'.

Details found in /etc/fstab may be omitted.

        mount -a [-t|-O] ...  : mount all stuff from /etc/fstab

mount device          : mount device at the known place

mount directory          : mount known device here

mount -t type dev dir    : ordinary mount command

Note that one does not really mount a device, one mounts

a filesystem (of the given type) found on the device.

One can also mount an already visible directory tree elsewhere:

        mount --bind olddir newdir

    or move a subtree:

        mount --move olddir newdir

A device can be given by name, say /dev/hda1 or /dev/cdrom,

or by label, using  -L label  or by uuid, using  -U uuid .

Other options: [-nfFrsvw] [-o options] [-p num].

For many more details, say  man 8 mount .

    [root@localhost hbob]# mount -t iso9660 -o loop /path/to/MandrakeLinux-9.2-18-Download-2.i586.iso /mnt/mdk92iso2

    [root@localhost hbob]#

    note:

When I recieved the message the second time after typing it in a different way, I inserted cd1, then it fonund the first iso.

I tried inserting both cd1 and cd 2 during the next cammand lines iso2, and iso3, did not help.

to keep you up to date, I did a complete new install to be able to see the cdroms at least.

So made this attempt on a fresh system.

Here is the current copy on the fstab:

    /dev/hdb1 / ext3 defaults 1 1

    none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0

    /dev/hdb8 /home ext3 defaults 1 2

    none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

    none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

    none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,sync,umask=0 0 0

    /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    /dev/hdb6 /mnt/win_c2 vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    /dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    /dev/hdb7 /mnt/win_d2 vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    none /proc proc defaults 0 0

    /dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0

I also have another fstab.mdkgiorig it reads as follows:

    /dev/hdb1 / ext3 defaults 1 1

    none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0

    /dev/hdb8 /home ext3 defaults 1 2

    none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

    none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

    none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,sync,umask=0 0 0

    /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    /dev/hdb6 /mnt/win_c2 vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    /dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    /dev/hdb7 /mnt/win_d2 vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    none /proc proc defaults 0 0

    /dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0

Hope You can sence of it all, it's new to me.

  4. I should add one thing, when I open kedit now after selecting a program it looks like the original fstab with out the changes:

    none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

    none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

  5. I have:

    emacs

    gedit

    kate

    kedite

    khexedit

    kwrite

I used kedit again and I was able to edit my fstab (yes it looked the same as below) I made the changes and it saved, but I can't see my DVD drive at all

And there is no /mnt/hdc/ just the two cdroms (nothing has changed as far as what I see in /mnt/)

when I open cdrom2 and I have a cd in the drive I see nothing and the player doesn't indicate activity.

So I'll edit it back just so I can at least see the drive.

in /dev/ there was no hdc.

well when I open /etc/fstab/ as root, it's empty, now.

when I go to /etc/fstab/ the file has changed properties, I can still see what I seen before

    /dev/hdb1 / ext3 defaults 1 1

    none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0

    /dev/hdb8 /home ext3 defaults 1 2

    none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

    change

    none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc/auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

    none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

    change

    none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd1,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

    none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,sync,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,codepage=850 0 0

    /dev/hdb6 /mnt/win_c2 vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,codepage=850 0 0

    /dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,codepage=850 0 0

    /dev/hdb7 /mnt/win_d2 vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,codepage=850 0 0

    none /proc proc defaults 0 0

    /dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0

I must choice a program to open it(that's not good )

when I open it with kate I see (what's above)

as root I copied and pasted into the blank page (from saved info)

I was not allowed to write to file.

So the file is still there, but it's no longer seen/the system doesn't know what to do with the file.

And I can't seem to put it back.

  6. BVC

Typed in su and the password tried several different ways of typing kate, no luck.

However I did type in kedit and I recieved a hugh page listing drives/ cdroms, what I read of it.

It also opened kedit, bad news is before I could copy, I hit x bad mistake.

Now when I went to open devices in kedit, this is what shows up:

    CD-ROM (hdc) [/mnt/cdrom]

    CD-ROM [mnt/cdrom]

    CD-ROM [mnt/cdRom2]

    CD-ROM [mnt/cdrom]

    Floppy

    Floppy (fd0)

    Hard disc (hda1) [mnt/win_c]

    Hard disc (hda5 [mnt/win_d]

    Hard Disc (hdb1)[/]

    Hard Disc (hdb7[mnt/win_c2]

    Hard Disc (hdb8[/home]

if I go to the mount directory /mnt/ what I see is different I.E.

    I show a cdrom, cdrom2, win_c, win_c2, win_d and win_d2

2 partitions on the first drive primary 40 gig 40/60

2 win partitions about 49 gigs each

27 gigs for Mandrake 9.2 and all I have is the system installed (for a home user)

Now I did create a file in the /home/ directory called hdc1

And I did a: s /mnt/cdrom2 /dev/hdc1 in the terminal is acted as though it had finished the task

I rebooted and then tried to install a package (mplayer).

Again cd 2 was asked to be loaded, I did and clicked ok.

    and not.

When I check the file/folder (properties) created in /home/hbob/ directory 0 files

    Tried typing in su

    [hbob@localhost hbob]$ su

    Password:

    [root@localhost hbob]# file /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc: Can't stat `/dev/hdc' (No such file or directory)

    [root@localhost hbob]#

I'm not sure but it looks like I have way to many cdroms listed in one place.

And not enough hard drives listed in other places.

I did try to re-open the terminal again and I typed in kedit once more, this time it just opened kedit no list, will try to reboot again.

maybe list will come back up ?

  7. Stupid question

How do I do it as root, I open kate and there is no option to edit as root.

I go to terminal and typed edit /etc/fstab and you know the answer edit is not a good word.

So how do I open as root and edit with kate ?

Be kind, I'm really new to this.

I could go on searching the net, but I know you know the answer.

  8. Because I'm use to kde somewhat, I used kate.

Made the edit tried to save (not enough disk space or do not have permission)

I don't believe disk space is the problem.

May have to do this as su is there a way for that to happen ?

As far as downloading I do have hi speed with a cap of 150 mb per 4 hrs I use filzilla in windows,

so I can pause and resume.

But in order to install any packages, Mandrake would more then likly need to look at disk1.

A normal update failed because the system could not see disk1.

And I updated (or tried to ) from: ftp://ftp.club-internet.fr/pub/unix/linux...6/Mandrake/RPMS

I lost you as far as to what I was downloading if it's Mandrake 10. cooker I have it, and tried to update to it, not sure how that went. ( recieved a warning during the update, that there was a problem, it finished the prosses I guess, never checked to see if I had 2.6 kernel or not.

Could not update or install packages, I have sense did a format and reinstall of 9.2 and stayed here till I work through this problem, this was about two weeks ago.

Up until then I had been running on a old 600 mhz. p-3 and doing quit well, this other computer

has to many expensive toys on it.

ATI all in wonder 8500DV (have not tried to config.)

Creative audigy gamer (have not tried to config.) no sound either, watching the threads on these.

Both of these still need to be config. for Mandrake but that's another day down the road.

  9. BVC

    Question

How do I edit fstab, I am new and this is a area not covered.

    aRTee

Tried not sure if I was doing that right, but I tried and I recieved a message that was not allowed.

It showed downloading some 500 + mb of files before that message.

what I did was cp /mnt/cdrom2/Mandrake /dev/hdc1/Mandrake a file I had created, I thought it was looking for the file there so give it what it wants.

  10. I took another look at the hardware list and the cd/rw is listed as:

    a CD/DVD burner=scd1

    bus: scsi

    location on the bus: 0:0:0

    channel: 00

    new devfs device: ‎/dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/cd

    Old device file: /dev/scd1

    Floppy format: IDE-CD R/RW 4x4x24

    Media class: cdrom

    The DVD=scd0

    Bus: ‎SCSI

    Location on the bus: ‎0:0:0

    Drive capacity: ‎DVD

    Channel: ‎00

    New devfs device: ‎/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd

    Old device file: ‎/dev/scd0

    Floppy format: ‎TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1612

    Media class: ‎cdrom

and when I /mnt/cdrom2 I see my DVD

    when I /mnt/cdrom I see my cd/rw

This is confusing for me because the cd/rw is not DVD

And the DVD is only a reader, not a writer.

And you are right in pointing out that the fstab file does not jive

    none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

this is the device Mandrake see as a CD/DVD

    none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

this is the device Mandrake see as my DVD

Now the truth is I tried to reinstall from the CD/RW but I recieved a /sbin/ something I should have paid more attention, any how the reinstalled failed , the end of the message read just restart the system to boot normal.

    in /dev/

I have cdroms=cdrom0 and cdrom1, not sure what device these would be.

    I have disks=disk0 and disk1

I have scsi=host0 and host1 these are the DVD and the cd/rw as what I read.

    I have ide=hd and host0

    below the files I have

    hda, hda1, hda2 and hda5

    hdb, hdb1,hdb2,hdb5,hdb6,hdb7 and hdb8

they look like shortcuts to something .

As far as turning off harddrake how and where, and would that resolve my problems and allow me to update and install packages ?

And if I were to change fstab to read

    none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd1,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

would that cause a crash as the system see's the CD/DVD as scd1

and in /dev/ scd0 and scd1 do exist as what looks like shortcuts to something you perhaps know.

that's all I can think of any more questions ask away

  11. Chris

Not sure if I have the same problem.

as this thread, he was trying to install the system from a DVD disk.

I have my images burned onto cd but I am using a DVD which shows up as /mnt/cdrom1

It's during the update/package install stage it looks at cd1 at cdrom2 in file /dev/hdc1

here in is where the problem lies, My DVD didn't creat a hdc1 file in /dev/

    both /dev/cdrom's are listed /dev/cdrom/cdrom0 and /dev/cdrom/cdrom1

    and I can /mnt/cdrom and /mnt/cdrom2

Now if I could creat a file called /dev/hdc1 and mirror/link /mnt/cdrom1 into it, for install and updating.

  12. iphitus

I copied the fstab it reads as:

    /dev/hdb1 / ext3 defaults 1 1

    none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0

    /dev/hdb8 /home ext3 defaults 1 2

    none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

    none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

    none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,sync,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,codepage=850 0 0

    /dev/hdb6 /mnt/win_c2 vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,codepage=850 0 0

    /dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,codepage=850 0 0

    /dev/hdb7 /mnt/win_d2 vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,codepage=850 0 0

    none /proc proc defaults 0 0

    /dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0

Also checked media manager and it lists:

    installation cd1(x86)(cdrom1)

    installation cd2(x86)(cdrom2)

When I try to install packages it wants the:

    installation cd1(x86)(cdrom2) in folder /dev/hdc1

there is no /dev/hdc1 so the installation fails.

both cdrom are listed as /dev/cdrom and /dev/cdrom1

and I can go to /mnt/cdrom0 and see the contents on the DVD

and the same for /mnt/cdrom1 I see the contents of the HP cd/rw.

Could it be jumpers on the DVD and the HP ?

both are listed as scsi drives.

  13. I have a HP i-8210 cd-rw and a Toshiba DVD rom and with Mandrake 9.2 can not use them (at all).

I installed the system from the DVD-rom

I checked to see what my bio's said and both are seen and also in windows xp both are seen.

    Running dual doot

Mandrake 9.2 sees the drives as

    scd1 Hp cd-rw

    bus: scsi

    location on bus: 0:0:0

    drive capacity: Burner

    channel: 00

    new devfs device: /dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/cd

    old device file: /dev/scdi

    floppy format: IDE-CD R/RW 4x4x24

    media class: CDrom

    scd0 Toshiba DVD-rom

    bus: scsi

    location on bus: 0:0:0

    drive capacity DVD

    channel 00

    new devfs device /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd

    old device file /dev/scd0

    floppy format TOSHIBA DVD-rom sd-m1612

    media type cdrom

Had Mandrake installed on older pc with creative cd rom with no problems.

Installed on Newer pc and can't add packages or update

  14. I'm new to all this, I tried to move a file using the command as su

    mv /home/username/tmp/name of file.mdk.i586.rpm /user/src/RPM/RPMS/i586

Now I checked and the file I want to move which is j2re-1.4.2_01-1mdk.i586.rpm

    is there.

And the location user/src/RPM/RPMS/i586 is there.

But I get a "can not start"

I found the unpacked files in user/java/ folder and I tried to move just those file and that command failed.

Then I tried installing flash player and that also failed

    "can not install flash 6.0"

Mandrake ID's both flashplayer and realplayer as unknown players

  15. Installed Mandrake 9.2 downloaded from FTP server.

Install and config. went great, been running for three maybe four months now, still learning.

Went to boot up pc and motherboard ran normal boot, the system failed to boot the loader I'm using lilo, what I got was

99999 99999 999 9999 999999999 over and over again, and no command options.

Ran fdisk/mbr and was able to boot to windows on first drive then went to reinstall / upgrade to 10. cooker I had not done so yet.

I recieved a warning about corrupted files and I agreed and was in the install sreen for new install, at the partition section I was only offered 7. something gigs. of a 20 gig. hard drive ( I have two drives ) Mandrake 9.2 is on hdb1.

Question is can I recover the other half of my drive ?
