  1. Thanks for the reply, but please excuse my ignorance -  I've been reading through the posts and googling about, but where can I get the patch from ?  All I can see is source code.  Or is that it ?

If you are using the latest stable kernel (2.6.5) you can apply this patch to the kernel source, recompile and be all set.

    use the nforce2_timer.patch

    http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/peo...hes/test/2.6.5/

There are some more patches that will comeout later, unless you want to cut and paste the code from the LKML and manually patch it...

it looks like it will be fixed in 2.6.6 or 2.6.7 so this will not be an issue.

You can also contact the company that made your mothboard and ask them for BIOS update that fixes this issue. NVidia has release a fix to them as well.

  2. Mandrake10.0 didn't play well with windows (which I still need for a couple of apps). So, I reformatted my hard drive, reloaded windows and now trying to reinstall mdk9.2 which I've done several times before. However, now install keeps hanging at various stages during the process (once with 10 sec to go...). After trying install many times, I accidently chose the upgrade option instead of install and everything appeared to work fine. However, upgrade skipped the add user and setting root password steps. Since I tried/failed the install first, I don't have any users or root password.

I'm also curious why 9.2 wants to hang during install now when it used to work...anyone have any ideas? When I reformatted/reloaded windows, I only gave it 5g of 80g (I partitioned/formatted 5g as FAT32 in DOS). The rest I left unformatted for linux...does that make a difference?

Only app loaded in windows is Norton Utilities 2003...could that be a problem?

    Thanks for any help...

at the boot prompt (you may have to hit esc at the boot screen) type:

    linux single

    then at the prompt type

    passwd

This will let you create a root password. Next you can run drakconf to do this at the prompt type

    drakconf

It will let you setup users under the system section.

  3. what's your hardware config?

    It's an Asus A7n8X ultra (NFORCE2) + amd 2600 + 512ddr + 120go and 40go

I'll try to boot with your options!

Do you think that nforce2 causes these problems?

It's the apic and acpi that is causing your problems... you should also turn off the onboard network card (nvnet the 3com or realtek one should be ok), firewire, SATA, raid etc. you can turn them back on when after the install is done.

  4. Reboot your computer (there are other ways of doing this, but rebooting is the easiest.)

    open a terminal and type

su (it will ask for your root password )

    rpm --rebuilddb

Your rpm database should now be unlocked. Update your rpm stuff in the update software section of the mandrake control center so this does not happen again. (if you haven't done so already)

  5. I was wondering if there is a way to tell Mandrake10.0C where to put the .kde directory during the installation. I've got a multi-boot running with Mandrake9.2 and the last time I  installed Mandrake10.0C I had issues with personal settings in KDE. KDE3.2 (MDK10.0C) carried over some K panel settings from KDE3.1(MDK9.2) and when I run MDK9.2 I lose some settings in the K panel. Dead links in KDE3.2 and missing links in KDE3.1.

I guess what I'm looking for is a way to make separate .kde directories for each version in my /home partition so I can keep settings different for each KDE version. I just want to be able to do this before or during installation of MDK10.0C. Perhaps changing the KDE3.1 .kde directory before installing MDK10.0C.

    As of now I've got a / and /home parition for MDK9.2 (and a Wink2k)

I'm new, so tell me if more information is required.

    try opening konsole and typing

su (it will ask for your root password)

    update-menus -v

    exit

    update-menus -v

Make sure that the rpm database isn't locked

It should fix the missing menu items.

  6. Small addition: as from kernel 2.6 there is no longer a need for ide-scsi emulation.

Mandrake 10.0 uses this kernel by default, it also comes with a 2.4 kernel.

scsi is still needed in some instances like for kb3 and eroaster unless that has been changed?

I know that Linus said that scsi emulation was an ugly hack, and that it was suppose to be remove, but then it was added back until the burning apps could rewrite their apps.

  7. I had bad signature, but looking carefully at the message it said: can't open file. The file just didn't existed on the mirror. What surprised me for this release is that the mirror I used to use was not there anymore, that all the other french one I tried (only 2 ??) were bad. The dutch mirror saved me   but I don't understand what happen with those mirrors. That was fine with previous release.

If the package has been updated, the old one won't be there any more. If the error is that the file isn't there... the thing to do to fix this would be to update your urpmi source before updating.

  8. Heres another tip.

If you place the startup script in /home/your_username/bin/ directory

you can call it with just the name at the command prompt or via link to application.

No need for "/pathtoscript/scriptname" just "scriptname" from any directory without the "./".

For some shell scripts, you need to be in a directory when you run it, as it creates a temp file that another program is looking for in that specific directory.

Without seeing the ./runlegends script I went with the safe route....

  9. Search http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/cks/ for the latest key (search for mandrake)

You'll find the keys for mandrakesoft:

If you get errors about the sig does not match do not install the package!

  10. The subject says it all I think

I want to do an Icon on my desktop (KDE 3.2) wich will run Legends without opening each time a terminal, cding the directory and do /.runlegends... ^^

Can anyone help me with that?

Create a file named startlegends with this in it

    ##!/bin/bash

    cd /path/to/legends/

    ./runlegends

Then make the file executable using permissions in kde or from the commandline type

    chmod +x startlegends

Then right click the desktop -> create new file -> link to application

It should be self explanatory from there... but you need to hit advanced options in the application tab and check the run in terminal box and for the application the path should be something like

    '/home/<username here>/./startlegends'

You have to put the ./ in front of the startlegends

  11. Last night I bit the bullet and decided to run Mandrake Update and checked off about 250 Mb. of programs.  After downloading them all I found that the refused to install due to invalid signatures and the whole update was aborted.  Needless to say, I was more than unhappy and was on the virge of screaming Mandrake failure when I decided to try downloading just a few at a time and lo and behold this worked with all but two, initscripts and menu.  There may be others depending on what you have installed.  I went to a cooker mirror and downloaded the two errant programs to my desktop and installed from there.  So it seems that there is a bug in update that one bad signature will trash the whole update.  So doing it in steps takes a little longer but it works.

    Counterspy

If you update signatures in gpg before running the update you won't run in to this... unfortunatly there is nothing to automate this task at this time.

  12. 1. A bug in the kernel lists CD-RW devices causes this problem; it has no effect on the useability of the device.

Solution: Modify the kernel options used in your boot loader and append "hdclun=0" if /dev/hdc is your CD-RW device (use "hdXlun=0" for /dev/hdX).

2.It uses SCSI to communicate to write to the device. In Windows it uses SCSI as well under ASPI (advance scsi programming interface)

  13. Hello.

I'm a proud owner of a SparcStation 10 with dual CPU's and 109 Mb RAM and some 1gb HDD =)

I just installed the latest Mandrake version on it and i must say, very surprised over how easy it went, thanks for that.

Anyway, the thing is i need to go out on the net with it, when it starts up it says i have an Lance something card, i'm not really sure what i have, anyway.

I can't find any modules or support for the card, im 100% sure it works, i've tried it in Solaris (dhcp) and in BPROM so it's not the hardware so i thought i should upgrade a little to the 2.6 kernel but i can't seem to find it, any help on that?

Also, if you can help me with the card instead or both please write whatever you can come up with, the search on this forums aren't that great as far as i've seen.

I have the 2.2.16 SMP kernel for Sparc.

You can get the 2.6 kernel here.

    ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/

to get it to work on mandrake untar and unzip the file, then mv the folder (as root) to /usr/src/linux-<kernel version here>

then open a console and type

    cd /usr/src/

    rm linux

    ln -s linux-<version number here> linux

    cd linux

    make xconfig

select the stuff you want in the kernel

    make all

    make modules install

    make install

    lilo

    reboot

make sure to select your new kernel at boot.

If it works select the new kernel as the default in the mandrake control center in the boot section.

  14. OK, this is fairly ridiculous.  My hypothetical example (apparently badly picked) is being picked apart, completely missing the point.  Let's just assume that happened with two files with completely different names.  Hell, let's just assume there's one file in the directory.

    andrew:andrew$ cat file\ \(12\:<!--QuoteEBegin-->[HITS TAB]<!--QuoteEBegin-->andrew:andrew$ cat file\ (12:1-1)

So... POINT IS that whatever is in the directory, when I hit tab-completion, it doesn't act normally.  With that in mind, does anyone have any ideas?

    [thinkliberty@localhost tester]$ echo sfasgasgasaaf > "the (file :1-2)"

    [thinkliberty@localhost tester]$ ls

    the (file :1-2)

    [thinkliberty@localhost tester]$ cat t

    <I hit tab here>

    [thinkliberty@localhost tester]$ cat the\ \(file\ \:1-2\)

    sfasgasgasaaf

    [thinkliberty@localhost tester]$cp the\ \(file\ \:1-2\) the\ \(file\ \:1-2\)~

    [thinkliberty@localhost tester]$ cat the\ \(file\

    <I hit tab here>

the (file :1-2) the (file :1-2)~

    [thinkliberty@localhost tester]$ cat the\ \(file\ \:1-2\)

I don't seem to have the same problem?

  15. An annoying thing I'm finding:

When I use <TAB> to complete the name of a file with ';, :, (, or )', the backslashes to tell it to interpret those literally go away.  Then I have to go back to those and manually enter them in, even if I had already done that before I hit <TAB>.

    Example:

    andrew:andrew$ cat file\ (12\:<!--QuoteEBegin-->[HITS TAB]<!--QuoteEBegin-->file (12:1-1)  file (12:1-2)<!--QuoteEBegin-->andrew:andrew$ cat file (12:1-

Anyone know how to fix this?

You have to files with just the last letter different, how is bash's tab completion suppose to know which one you want?

try renaming one of the files to zz12:1-1 and then hit tab to complete it.

  16. If you upgrade to 4.4 what do you do if something is not compatible or something goes wrong? (Besides restore) Is there a way to roll back?

You can uninstall X, then install a new version older version. If you install anything needing X from the source it might have to be recompiled as well.
