  1. Well, installed it.

    Try to open firefox:

    [mikejr@dhcp-313-89 firefox]$ ./firefox

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /home/mikejr/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so [libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/share/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so [libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]

    Still no Flash.

  2. ..and following the examplle from the java above I get the following:

    [root@dhcp-313-89 mikejr]# chmod a+x gcc2.96-2.96-0.83mdk.i586.rpm

    [root@dhcp-313-89 mikejr]# rpm -iv gcc2.96-2.96-0.83mdk.i586.rpm

warning: gcc2.96-2.96-0.83mdk.i586.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 70771ff3

    error: Failed dependencies:

            gcc2.96-cpp = 2.96-0.83mdk is needed by gcc2.96-2.96-0.83mdk

    [root@dhcp-313-89 mikejr]#

Obviously there dependencies, how to I go about finding them? All of the files at the rpm finder have identical names... I'm trying very hard to hold back my comments about linux right now, as I'm sure this will all pay off in the end :wall:

When I attempt to install using the GUI, it seems to work smoothly until I get a message saying that it has a bad signature? I have not proceeded past this - is it common?

The following packages have bad signatures:

/home/mikejr/gcc2.96-2.96-0.83mdk.i586.rpm: Invalid signature ((SHA1) DSA sha1 md5 (GPG) (MISSING KEY) GPG#70771ff3 NOT OK)

  3. The mandrake installation went a little too easy

I have just noticed that I can't play CD's. I have two drives, the one on top is a DVDrom and the one beneath is a CDRW. When I put a CD into the top drive, nothing happens. When I put a CD into the bottom drive, the CD Player program opens up, but I hear nothing... I can't seem to get it to recognize CD's. Games have sound, everything else seems to work sine.

Any suggestions on how to fix?

    Mike

  4. OK, ran the installer - it gave me an option to install into the mozilla directory or the netscape directory:

Macromedia Flash Player 6 will be installed in the following directory:

    Mozilla installation directory  = /home/mikejr/.mozilla

    Netscape installation directory = /home/mikejr/.netscape

There was no option for firefox...

Ran the installer as root and installed into the firefox directory :)

    Stile get

    [mikejr@dhcp-313-89 firefox]$ ./firefox

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /home/mikejr/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so [libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/share/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so [libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]

Should I have installed into the firefox/pluins directory?

  5. I get :

    [root@dhcp-313-89 firefox]# ./firefox

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/share/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so [libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]

  6. OK, when I try to copy I get

    Report bugs to <bug-coreutils@gnu.org>.

    [root@dhcp-313-89 firefox]# cp * /usr/share/firefox/

    cp: omitting directory `chrome'

    cp: omitting directory `components'

    cp: omitting directory `defaults'

    cp: omitting directory `icons'

    cp: omitting directory `ipc'

    cp: omitting directory `plugins'

    cp: omitting directory `res'

    cp: omitting directory `searchplugins'

    [root@dhcp-313-89 firefox]#

  7. I downloaded Firefox, using Ark - which I assume is similar to WinZip. Then I decompressed it into my home folder. I go to the folder and click on the Firefox icon and guess what? It opens...

So have I done this right? How can I get it into the menu? I also downloaded the Flash plug, installed it via command line and it still doesn't display flash :( So I'm guessing that I have installed Firefox incorrectly...

Any help is appreciated! I'm a quick learner so hopefully these n00b questions will go away soon.

  8. Thanks for the reply!

Here's what I did before I saw this post:

booted from the install cd and chose upgrade, everything went fine, now the rpm database includes openoffice, however when I go to install it it asks for disk 3.... Which I haven't burned yet :) So I'll bun it this evening and see what happens then.

  9. MOD NOTE: Moved to Software by LiquidZoo

Hi guys, just installed Mandrake 10 after playing with Move for a few weeks. I burned CD1, thinking it would have everything I needed to install Mandrake. I was right, unfortunately I needed disk 2 to install openoffice...

I specified installing open office in the beginning, now I'm stuck with it in the menu, but not available...

When I put in disk two and navigate to the Mandrake/ folder, and double click on of the open office rpms, it asks me to insert disk 1 - I do and it simply asks again.

I am a total noob when it comes to linux, any help would be appreciated.
