  1. I have a bunch of xvid avi's that I'd like to convert to mpeg files. Is there a linux

app that will do this for me? Also, will k3b burn vcd's? I'm still a linux noob and

this will be my first time using k3b. I have nero on win2000 but thought this

would be a good time to go linux only if possible. Thanks for any info!

  2. Germ, thanks for the heads up on Kshowmail, its exactly what I've been searching for.

I've installed it and am have a problem with it already. After I setup all my info and hit

check mail I get the following error:

The server certificate failed the authenticity test

    (mail.xxxxxx.net)

I am confused as to whats wrong here. Any ideas?

    Thanks, Jason

  3. Just another quick question. Where dows UT2004 save game progress data

to? My machine is acting flaky again and I'd like to make a backup of my

progress but don't know what to save. Thanks for any info.

  4. Thanks for the help guys. As for IM clients, I also have kopete up and running,

but I like to have yahoo as well, since sometimes the others won't work with

yahoo. As for the gimp, I go into konsole and type 'gimp' and it fires right up.

If I make a new shortcut on the desktop, can I include any options here for it

to start up as root or start thru konsole? Thanks again!

  5. I recently got mandrake 10 running and am having a few problems with some programs.

I am still pretty much a newbie at this so bear with me.

    1) Yahoo IM: I download the latest redhat 9 RPM and install it. When I run it, it only works

if run from konsole, and as root. then before I can set all the settings it crashes and I

get a 'segmantation fault' error. this app worked on 9.2 for me. Any ideas?

    2) The Gimp 2.0: I have a bunch of RPM's from different places and installed them. If I

try to launch it from the menu or a desktop icon it won't startup. If I launch it from konsole

it starts right up. Why does this happen and what can I do to my menu link to fix it? If I

create a icon on my desktop how do I set that up properly? I tried this previously and

I kept getting a gimpwidgets error, which is installled already.

I think thats it for now, I just got UT2004 back up and running as I type this.

    Thanks, Jason

  6. I just downloaded some icons i'd like to use and don't know how to

install them. The file is a tar.bz2 file. If I go to config/look n' feel/icons

and choose 'install new theme', I get an error saying it is an invalid

type of file. I tried converting the file to some other formats, with no

luck. How do I install these icons? I'm a relative noob so any advice is

    appreciated. I'm on 9.2. thanks.

  7. It looks like the prblem has been corrected. I changed my bios settings as suggested

and bought a heavy duty surge protector and so far so good. I'm still baffled why this

would start happening after +1.5 years....oh well. thanks again for all the info.

  8. :evilmod:

I've been having a weird problem lately and I'm not sure if it has anything

to do with linux or not. About a month or 2 ago I put mandrake 9.2 on my

machine as a dual boot with windows 2000. For the last few weeks my

machine will randomly turn itself on. I'll wake up in the morning, come home

from work and it will just be on. I've never heard of this happening, and I'm

a little confused as what causing it. Could this be a power strip problem? A

power problem with my machine? Does it have anything to do with the OS'?

Any ideas? Also, I had a corrupted windows 2000 last night and had to reinstall

it fresh, and the machine still turns itself on. Here are my machine specsa:

    Windows 2000 sp3/Mandrake 9.2 dual boot

    Athlon 2200

    512 mb RAM

    350w power supply

    msi kt-3 ultra kt333 motherboard

    512mb pc2700 RAM

    60gig ATA HD

    Thanks for any info!

  9. Hey all, I currently use a win2000/mandrake 9.2 dual boot and

I am looking for a linux equivalant program. In win2000 I have

mailwasher, which allows me to see my email at my ISP before

I download it. mailwasher also allows me to delete spam, add

spam to a blacklist and so on. It there a linux program that is

similar or that can do these things? I miss being able to control

what email comes into my inbox. I use the latest Opera as my

    email/browser. Thanks

  10. ok, i'm back again with some good news. I decided to try installing the

game again last night and popped the cd into the cd drive, not the dvd.

started the install and it went through, no problems at all. I guess UT

doesn't like my dvd drive. Its cool I got the game working, but it is

noticably slower than on windows 2000. Do any of you have any

tweaks I can make to improve performance? Here are my machine

    specs.

    Athlon 2200

    512 mb RAM

    geforce T1 4600, 128mb latest linux drivers

    mandrake 9.2

Thanks again for all the help.

  11. Ok....I have all the most current packages and have them installed. At least

I think so, I didn't get any errors. Now when I try to install gtk+-2.4.0 I get

the exact same error message. If atk is installed, why is this still happening?

    Thanks again!

checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... (cached) yes

    checking for pkg-config... /usr/bin/pkg-config

    checking for glib-2.0 >= 2.4.0 atk >= 1.0.1 pango >= 1.4.0... Requested 'glib-2.0 >= 2.4.0' but version of GLib is 2.2.3

configure: error: Library requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.4.0 atk >= 1.0.1 pango >= 1.4.0) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.

  12. Hey all, I'm having a problem with installing the new gimp 2.0. I have installed

atk-1.2.4, glib-2.2.0, pango-1.2.5, but cannot get gtk+-2.2.0 to go. Here is the

    error I get:

checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... (cached) yes

    checking for pkg-config... /usr/bin/pkg-config

checking for glib-2.0 >= 2.1.4 atk >= 1.0.1 pango >= 1.0.1... Package atk was not found in the pkg-config search path.

Perhaps you should add the directory containing `atk.pc'

    to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable

    No package 'atk' found

configure: error: Library requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.1.4 atk >= 1.0.1 pango >= 1.0.1) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.

    [root@localhost gtk+-2.2.0]#

How do I correct this? Thanks for any advice!

  13. hmmmm.......thats a possibility. I have about 7 gigs free space, before the install.

The game says it takes about 5.3 gigs of space. Does linux make a temp version

of the stuff its installing on the drive? Should I add more space to this drive?

    Thanks!

  14. I'm back, and having problems with the retail version as well. I run the sh file

and then it starts the install upto a point ands just exits. I get this message,

    Copying to a temporary location...

    Verifying archive integrity... All good.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

    athlon 2200

    gforce t14600

    mandrake 9.2[/code]

  15. OK, so I am making progress! I have the demo installed, then type 'ut2004demo' and get this error:

    Loading required GL library /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2

Couldn't set video mode: Couldn't find matching GLX visual

    What does this mean? Thanks.

  16. Hello, let me start off by saying I am a linux newbie. I have mandrake 9.2 installed

and running fine. So I downloaded the UT2004 demo and could not get it installed.

Can anyone give me a step-by-step way to install it? Also, I want to get the linux

version of this game when it comes out, and was wondering if the install from the cd will be the same as the download? How does linux install programs from a cd?

Thanks for any info, this site has been a huge help for me so far!!!
