  1. Sorry for long reply, I was away this week.

Actually, I removed amaroK after it did this in the vain hope that would solve it. With xmms, after loading a track and clicking play - the program hangs, and I can't close it, at least nothing in the window responds to clicks and neither does right click -> close on taskbar. It just... hangs... other programs work fine, I'm posting whilst it's hanging right now.

  2. As the title says, after I installed the new version of amaroK, my soundcard isn't working. Any media program that tries to use it either hangs/crashes/ gives an error.

Here's what Harddrake said about it:

    Identification

    Vendor: ‎ESS Technology

    Description: ‎ES1978 Maestro 2E

    Media class: ‎MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO

    Connection

    Bus: ‎PCI

    Bus PCI #: ‎0

    PCI device #: ‎8

    PCI function #: ‎0

    Vendor ID: ‎4701

    Device ID: ‎6520

    Sub vendor ID: ‎4136

    Sub device ID: ‎158

    Driver

    Module: ‎maestro

    Alternative drivers: ‎snd-es1968

It has two drivers, one callled maestro - one called snd-es-1968, neither of them help anthing at all.

Anyone got any ideas, I'd quite like to listen to music again :P - thanks.

  3. Hi there, i just did some of the Update using Mandrake update... i cant remember which ones exactly but now :

    Konqorer(sp?) Is gone...

All the icons in my menu .. are gone... and all that is left is that standard folder icon...

When i try to open a file.. it asks me what i want to open it with..

Bits from the menus are gone/have been rearranged ...

Other programs are gone.. such as the IRC client and the link to the "konsole"

PLEASE! Can someone help me restore it to what it was.. im really worried that i did something wrong

    please...

Edit: Sorry for hype.. i was really worried.. but i fixed it now :D

  4. Right installed Linux yesterday and liked it from when i

    first installed it :)

But a couple of things im wondering about...

No.1: When i burnt a CD using the "Burn\\\"folder and then clicking the "Write to CD button", it looked fine, but when i tryed to open the CD in Windows... it thinks there's sometihng wrong with my CD :wall: any ideas?

    No.2

    Wireless Card :wall::wall::wall:

Ok ill try and explain this as well as i can. Theres pictures to go with it

Ok So i go into Hardrake and under ethernet cards theres my wireless card (see SNAPSHOT1.png in the zip)

So i click the only button there is, run config tool, so i do that and select it as a LAN.

So (this is in expert mode, basic seems to lead round in circles) soon i get to SNAPSHOT2.png (ignore drakconnect in the backround). This is telling me that it has found my ethernet card in my computer NOT my Wirless PCMCIA card :wall:

So if i click no then it goes to configuring IP address, etc.. not what i want. So if i click yes then it goes to this SNAPSHOT3.png, so i select orinoco_cs driver, just like liquidzoo's FAQ (which i did and it didnt work btw...) told me too.. and i configure the rest like IP's etc... and.... a bit fat nothing happens .... oh sorry it goes to SNAPSHOT4.png before that.. so if i get through it and look in drakconnect ... there is still my ethernet card set up with eepro100 driver... and my wireless card is nowhere to be seen :screwy::furious3: ..

Please can someone help me, i would apprecaite it very much

    ExoBot :(

Edit: oh that sucks it wont let me upload the pictures in a zip format... ill have to do them one by one in following posts.. sorry admin

  5. Ok one problem that i am finding quite annoying and am not sure if it is meant to do it; when i go into harddrake it can see my network card AND my wireless card... however when i look at the wireless card the first problem is that under the module bit (i think thats it... bad memory...) it says not configured or something like that... coloured red...

So when i click the only button available "configure" or something... im not really sure what options to select.. Wireless connection i guess falls under the "LAN" section? Doesnt it?

Man its hard to remember stuff from one OS to another... but later on if i try and change the driver to "orinoco cs" or something like that... it says its done it and i should reboot.. so i reboot and look at it again in Hardrake and it still has the "unconfigured" or something like that under the module section.. how do i make it like WORK??? :wall::wall:

The other thing was when it gave me the option to change drivers, it said it had the driver eepro ;(the driver which is used for my network card [not my wireless one, the normal one]) this makes me think that im trying to configure my network card.. not my wireless card... even though im clicked on the configure button for my wireless network card...

please can some clever nice person help a linux newbie :help:

phew... sorry for any spelling errors, if you dont understand some bits just say so and ill try and explain it better..

  6. thank you for replying i have downloaded both of the major things in that thread... the Linuxant and ndiswrapper.... i will put them onto CD and load up linux.. then follow the instructions that were given on thw websites... but erm .. then what do i do? i know linux has seen my wireless card since if i look in "Harddrake" (if i remember right) then one of them has 802.11g in its name.. so i guess thats it.. so after i have run the Linuxant and ndiswrapper things... what do i do? Im really sorry to ask all these questions but i really dont want to muck this up, and i really want wireless :) thank you... ^_^

  8. sorry for long time with no reply but i have been away this week.

ok im getting a bit confused, im sorry if this is a newbie question but what is "Windex"?

I amy be getting the wrong impression here but you guys are saying differant things...

    ok ill start over...

I have one 30gb HDD how should i partition it, with what, how big should each bit be.. etc... can you keep it simple please as i have never used Linux befoere :help:

  9. Hello there, i am going to install Mandrake 9.2 on my laptop which currently has XP on it.

I just wanted to check that i have got the right idea of what to do :)

Partition HDD (20gb to XP 10 to Linux) using Partition Magic 5.0

Then i just put CD1 in the drive? and follow instructions (i guess)

    1. Does the installation give the choice of which partition to install to?

    2. How easy is the installation? Do i need a wide knowledge of my hardware?

    3. When i start up my computer how do i choose which OS i want to load up?

    Thanking you in advance ...
