  1. Spend some more time on it. And noticed that the automatic detect keeps trying to set up an ISDN connection. I have to unselect ISDN and select ADSL. It seems to me this should all be pretty much automatic. Once I tell it what kind of connection I have, there is no othere information that should be required (since IP, Gateway, Mask etc. are automaticaly configured.)

I'm considering throwing in the install disk and doing an upgrade (since it set it up right at the first install) Anybody know if that might work?

  2. Not sure how the check the kernel. I know I'm using whatever came in the 9.2 install.

    More details -

    ADSL

    No router

    Firewall dissabled

    lan

Called my provider and they said gateway would be automaticaly

assigned unless I paid for a static line. (I didn't, but she

gave me the gateway numbers just in case)

Logged into windows and got DNS, Gateway, Subnet Mask, IP, and

DHCP info. Manually inputed that info, to no avail.

I'm going to go log back into Linux and see if I can get some screen prints.

And to think, I was going to completely remove windows today. Good thing I decided to wait.

  3. Ok, I've messed up. "If it aint broke, don't fix it"

I was messing around with my system (Running Mandrake 9.2 - Gnome) today and decided that I would take a look at my internet/network settings. In the Mandrake controll center, I selected the "configure your computer to share an internet connection with others" (or something like that) option, and went thru the setup. I meant to quit before finishing, but didn't. Now my computer won't connect to the Internet. I ran the other program to configure my connection, and corrected the settings, but I still can't get on. When I log into GNOME, I get an error box stating that it can't connect to "bla, bla" and suggests that I add it to /etc/host. I added it, but I don't think that I did it right. This is my work computer in my home office, and I desperately need a connection.

I don't ask for much (ok, ok that's a lie. I'm in here asking for help all the time). If anyone has some suggestions, I would appreciate it.

  4. That was the problem, tyme. I was trying to use a sensor that needed a depenedent RPM. I tried another and everything is running fine. gDesklets is a pretty neat little app. I think I'll keep it. :D

Still want to get the original desklet working (the launcher bar) but i'm having heck installing the necessary RPM. But I'll save that for another post if I can't figure it out.

Thanks for the advice tyme and Liquidzoo.

  5. I appreciate all the advice. I went over to the FAQ section and read up on URPMI. After setup, I used it to get flux box. Everything works perfectly now. If I had done this a month ago, I would have saved myself a lot of headaches. Switching from such a confined environment in Windows, I had no idea how usefull and helpfull something like URPMI could be.

I guess I should still learn how to handle the tar balls (I'm assuming that I screwed something up on my first try at installing Fluxbox), but at least now I know I can spend more time learning than chasing down dependent RPM's.

The more I use Linux, the more I like it. :cheesy:

    Thanks for the help

  6. Must have messed up that attachment. It's supposed to be a jpeg of the error box. Well here's what it says.

    "Welcome to gDesklets

it looks like you're running gDesklets for the first time.

You can add new displays by launching them in your file manager.

    Have fun"

then the OK button does nothing.

  7. I just read the URPMI FAQ. Got it all set up and loaded gdesklets. Now when I run gDesklets I get the nice little window you see below. When I hit "OK" nothing else happens. I can't figure out where in my file manager I am supposed to go.

The more I learn, the more confused I get. The more confused I get, the more I realize I need to learn. It's a viscious cycle.

    error

  8. So I wanted to give fluxbox a try out. Downloaded. Unpacked. Configured. Make and make install completed without a hitch (I think). Everything seems to be ready. Now what? I can't figure out how to access it.

Am I overlooking the obvious here?

I swear, It's amazing I found the power button on my computer today.

Someone please have mercy on this poor idiot.

  9. I was reading about gdesklets this morning and thought I'd give it a try. Easier said than done. I have been unable to get it working thus far. After unpacking the tar ball, I get as far as "./configure". then I hit this:

configure: error: Library requirements (gnome-python-2.0 >= 1.99.17 pygtk-2.0 >= 1.99.17) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.

I'm having a heck of a time getting gnome-python settled. Am I going about this the wrong way?

This seems like a pretty nice app, so I'd appreciate it if anyone has some advice.

BTW - super noob status. I had to go read another post to figure out how to begin the setup on a tar ball.

  10. Little question. I'm probably looking right at the solution, but any help would be appreciated.

I'm running mandrake 9.2, GNOME and doing a complete change out of my icons, but can't figure out how to change the trash icon or the menu icon (the one on the bar). Is there an easy way to do this, or can someone guide me to the source file for those icons so that i can change them out?

Like i said, not really anything important. I'm just starting to get a little irritated by the break in my theme that those two are causing :D

  11. If I understand your post correctly, I believe you may have missunderstood me. The sound is working fine. I'm having trouble getting video. It's only with WMV. I use GNOME, but will try it out in KDE when I finish with this. Sorry if my post was a little confusing.

  12. Here's the problem. I'm trying to get xine to play wmv files. I went to xine's website, downloaded the rpm and installed it. Now I get sound, but no video. I read another post with the same problem, but his solution (changing the video driver) didn't work for me. Running MDK 9.2 right now if that means anything. I'm just learning to use Linux, so please excuse any questions that seem dumb. There's most likely going to be a few more over the next couple of days.

  13. I don't know what to tell you. Thank goodness Linux is smarter than I am. After the 5th reset, Gnome started as normal. No problems that I can find. I still wish I knew why it happened. I would appreciate any comments if anyone knows what happened or why.

  14. Here's my problem. I restarted my computer earlier to get into Windows (I know, I know - I haven't had a chance to get everything transfered over yet) Anyway, I left the room for a few minutes. My system defaults to Linux so when I came back it had already booted Linux, but was setting in a terminal (? I've been using Linux for only a couple of months now) waiting for login. I went ahead and logged in and tried to start GNOME and KDE with startx. They both opened into IceWM. I'm typing this in IceWM right now. Everything seems to be running fine (except for GNOME and KDE). I'm stumped. Can anyone shed some light on my problem, or at least point me in the right direction?

  15. Never mind. After 3 days of trying to find a stever, I decided to host one myself. I started a game and let it set. 30 min later someone joined. An hour later, It was still just us two. I guess there's just no one playing.
