I just got a USB bluetooth dongle and walked through the steps to pair it with my mobile phone. Everything was working fine, and I was able to transfer files and stuff back and forth with no problem. Then it abruptly stopped working and says it can't connect to the phone.

I have verified that the phone still works w/ its bluetooth headset, so the phone's bluetooth hardware seems to be in order. I tried removing the pairing in the phone and putting the phone into discovery mode again. When I look at bluetooth:/ in Konqueror, the phone does indeed get discovered, but when I double-click on it--this was where previously it had asked me to enter a pin to make the pairing--it goes straight to sdp, where previously it had discovered a whole bunch of services but now discovers nothing.

Anybody have any experience w/ this?

I'm trying to connect an LG 8550 through the USB port. The phone certainly recognizes when it gets plugged into the computer, but I cannot mount it as a drive or connect via Kandy. Any ideas?

If you have served your time, I thought your punishment should be over?

That's how I feel about it, and once upon a time that was a pretty clear principle of law, but it has eroded over the years. In most states, for example, convicted felons can never again get a gun permit. In many they can't register to vote.

The case has been made that some people are still dangerous even after serving their sentence, but that strikes me as a problem with the length of the sentence, not a case to keep harassing them after it's over. Some argue that child molesters, for example, pretty much never stop doing it and should be watched for life; I sympathize, but if it's true then it seem to me they should be kept locked up for life and that it's cruel and irresponsible to turn them loose on society no matter how carefully we think we're monitoring them.

In this particular case, we're talking about a movie pirate for God's sake! Even if he resumes his crimes he's not really a threat to society. The government is treating this case like they've captured Dr. Mengele. Leave him alone already.

Well these files are untouched by anything even remotely related to Windoze, but I don't know anything about the internal workings of my mp3 player except that it spits out a playable .wav file. How can I tell if they're the tagged kind?

I'm not having problems with the .wav files per se. They sound great. I'm having trouble converting them.

Right-clicking and selecting action-convert did give me an mp3 file, but it too is just screeching static. Is there something about this particular .wav file (I recorded it using a standalone mp3 player, btw) that makes it hard to convert?

edit: I uploaded one to http://media-convert.com/, and whatever they use was able to convert it to a good mp3. That's kinda a hassle though.

Yes, I've been through the man page. Bitrate looks optional.

I did try adding a few different options, like

lame -h rec.wav rec.mp3

and now get an error that says

Warning: corrupt or unsupported WAVE format

Assuming raw pcm input file

I can play the .wav file though.

Follow-up: I just did an experiment creating a .wav with text2wave and converting it with lame (no options), and it worked. Apparently some .wav files work, and some don't.

Like the title says. Here's what I try:

lame rec01.wav rec01.mp3

Seems pretty simple to me. I can do it in audacity, but when I try to lame it from the command line I get a file with nothing but hideous screeching static. :o

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Alsa, and then a reboot. Sound now works again.

Well I installed it...and the very first thing that tried to play a sound crashed my system.

So I uninstalled it, and it took my existing sound stuff with it. When I went back to KDE sound setup it wouldn't even open the configuration dialog for me because it said it was missing soundlib.so.2. :(

So now to figure out what package I need to reinstall.

I loved Enemy Territory (had a native Linux version) and can't wait for the new one. I believe it will have native VOIP built into the client, so no need for TS.

I generally agree, however, that building a bigger desktop market for Linux is a necessary first step. The Dell thing will definitely help. Windows Vista is helping a lot too.

How hard will it be to set up?

I've always struggled with sound in Linux. Right now KDE kinda sorta does it automagically for me as long as I set the sound system to "Auto," but it still has that really annoying quirk that any time KDE makes so much as a beep or a click it takes complete control of the sound system for a few seconds, and any app that get opened during that time will have no sound.

Will there be an rpm in the repository so I can urpmi it? And does this mean Wolf ET will have sound without my having to jump through hoops? 'Cause that would be awesome.

oh, *goody*! the Linux audio infrastructure really just wasn't complicated enough up till now.

That's kind of how I feel. The only time I miss Winbloze is when I'm trying to get anything sound-related to work. Whatever its problems were, I have to give it this: I could listen to mp3s and play a game at the same time, and hear the sound from both.

BTW: your CD-Player seems to accept it as Audio-CD (showing the track), it just does not like the quality, otherwise it would say no disc or wrong media, but as you described at least it tries to play the disc

It's the CD player for a Geo Prizm, so maybe it's not sophisticated enough to have any error messages other than "Err." :)

One other thing...Should my size be 720:576? It's NTSC, and it's not widescreen format.

BTW, what should it be if I do copy one that's widescreen format?

Well I didn't do the second mencoder command, but shouldn't I still have been able to produce a DVD when I ran qdvdauthor? How important is that step?

I'm getting the capture okay as far as I can tell. I get an avi that I can watch with kmplayer, and qdvdauthor adds it to my project without objection. It's just that when I actually tell qdvdauthor to make the dvd it creates an empty file structure (VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS exist but are empty) and an .iso that k3b says is unusable.

I'll give your postprocessing command a whirl and see what shakes out.

This was somewhat frustrating for me, so I put it on the back burner for a while and tried again tonight. I'm using qdvdauthor and got as far as running the final burn process. It wanted to use something called dvdrecord, which I don't have and could get through urpmi, but it looks an awful lot like cdrecord so I substituted that. It ran all the way through to the record process and then blew up trying to burn the dvd. Since it had generated the .iso file, I opened that up in k3b, but k3b informed me that it was not a usable iso. :( I went back and looked at the directory where it was supposedly building the dvd structure, and it did indeed have VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS subdirectories, but they were empty.

It seems that your CD player is not particularly happy with the media dye you are using. Can you name the brand of the CDR blanks?

You could try burning again using the lowest possible speed, and using DAO (disk-at-once) burning mode.

 

I have only superlatives to say about Mitsui Gold media, which are rather expensive and not that easy to find. So far they have played flawlessly for me everywhere, including two-buck-portables.

But you can try other, good quality media- Taiyo Yuden, Ricoh... mostly Japanese stuff.

Uggh. This is certainly an education for me.

I don't see any files, .cda or otherwise, when I look at it in the file manager.

I kinda thought that a CD was a CD and that a CD player was a CD player. Certainly there is varying quality, just like there are good and bad quality cassette tapes, but any cassette tape will play in any cassette player in the world.

I'm using Memorex CDs, which have never been a problem for anything computer-related for me. I guess I'll look for one of those you recommend.

Here's where I am now: I recorded a tape using Audacity and got some nice .wav files that work.

I created an audio cd project and dropped the .wav files into it, then burned my CD. K3b said everything was A-okay and ejected the disc. To make sure, I put the disc back in and ran the CD Player program. It worked fine. Javaguy was Happy.

So this morning I got into my car to drive to work, put the CD in the player, saw "Track 1" briefly on the display thingy, then "Err." I ejected the disc blew the dust off and tried again just to make sure. "Err" again. I tried the other disc I made last night and got the same result. Javaguy was Unhappy.
