  1. Thanks mate, your a champ. Gaim had a built in option to turn it to Arts so it works sweet now. One thing though, when I am playing an mp3, for example, and goto play a flash game with firefox the sound works fine if I start firefox with artsdsp up front, I don't know if thats how you do it or not? Anyway, the sound is delayed somewhat ... Is that just arts way of doing things, and theres no way to change that? Or is there an option somewhere to decrease that delay?

Uhhh I just got a message saying artsdsp crashed, and now all the arts app's dont have sound unless I switch it back. How to I start her up again?

  2. Well its working. I have absolutely no idea how or why ... but its working ... All I did was change something in the boot loader, enable acpi (which for the record made using 2.6 impossibly slow to boot and to use once its booted) and .. it worked. After fiddling with kmix a little I have sound ....... again I have no idea why...........

Onto a new question, why does xmms crash when I goto load an mp3?

Oh adn thanks a heap for all your help! I don't know, maybe I did do something you said and I didn't realise it ... I really have absolutely no idea ... I just rebooted and noticed it was able to load it fine ... and it even said it was alsa! So yeah ............... no idea ...........

HAH! Gaim is so much better with sound notification ............

One last thing ( I hope ) is there a way to stop the system queing my sounds? If I'm playing a game or doing osmething that uses the sound, when it eventually stops I get all the other sounds (from gaim for example). How can I stop that n make it happen when its meant to?

  3. I'm running mandrake 10 on a clean install. The boot loader was configured with several options to boot from, linux, and 2456. So if I uname -r now I get 2.4.25-2mdk. If I run under the other its a 2.6 (according to this its 2.6.3-7mdk), I Dunno exactly off the top of my head ... I keep using this one cause it takes so damn long to boot otherwise.

I'll enable ACPI now and see if that fixes the problem. I'll get back to you again if not. For now I'm going to bed, so expect a reply tomorrow sometime ;)

  4. You've still lost me, you may as well be speaking chinese.

The 8x0 driver? the snd-intel8x0 one? Or another one? Its the only one in the list if I click "let me pick any driver". When I goto the sound system and go to turn it on, It says it can't find the device. If I do that it still lists the module as snd-cmipci. It also says that this is the "default" driver for my card. I don't know what to select. I don't know what I'm doing. You will have to tell me exactly what to do, I'm sorry. I still have no sound.

As you can tell I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with this, its not worth this much of my time.

  5. Okay I eventually got the drivers downloaded from the cmedia site and its just another tar.gz like I got on the CD that came with the card, just a slightly newer version. The readme file seems exactly the same though. The tar file comes with files:

    cmpci

    cmpci.c

    Config.in

    Configure.help

    Makefile

    README

Is that what you're talking about? What do I do with them? I tried following the instructions on the one on the CD and it didn't work, but maybe I did it wrong. Or maybe thats not what you mean at all.

This is turning into a lot of work to get sound, something I can't live without. If I don't have sound I won't be using linux. I just seem to be going in circles.

  6. I have 512mb of ram, and about that in swap space a little less purely from memory. The partitions are ext3. Compiling my own kernel is a little out of my reach at this point in time, I'm still trying to get other things working right.

2.4 boots fine, and fast, and shuts it down. I was just wondering if there was some issue with 2.6.

  7. Download it from the Cmedia website? Well okay, thats what I'm doing now ... but even though its only 800kb its going to take a year cause the site seems so dodgey I can't download from it. Nevertheless, I'll let it keep going. It looks like another tar file, which is the same thing that came on the cd. I had a tar on the cd, but you said I didn't need to do that?

Or have I completely misunderstood? Do I have to download OSS from the OSS site?

Can't even get a speed of 0.2Kb/sec at the moment.

Should I just try booting with the 2.6 kernel then? Will that use ALSA or what? I don't understand why I'm using OSS just cause I'm using the 2.4 kernel.

This card was a "no strings attached" kind of deal, I can take it back and say I couldn't get it to work and get a creative one ordered in. For some reason no one keeps creative in bloody stock. But this one should work!

  8. Okay draksound is what I was playing with before, just via MCC rather than console. I only have two options, both give errors:

    [root@localhost davious]# draksound

Doing alsactl to store mixer settings... [ OK ]

Shutting down ALSA sound driver (version 1.0.2c): [ OK ]

rmmod: module snd-cmipci is not loaded

Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.

You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg

  9. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, feel free to move it. My question is quick, and hopefully simple enough to answer :)

When I boot mandrake 10 with 2.6 it takes an extraordinary amount of time to boot, it takes for ever checking or mounting the partitions. I don't know why, any ideas? Also, it won't shut down when I'm using 2.6. I can reboot, but if I tell it to shut down it doesn't correctly power down the computer.

  10. Also while I'm here the only reason I'm using kernel 2.4 instead of 2.6 is because when I use 2.6 it takes forever and a day to boot, and it doesn't power off the system correctly. 2.4 does?

Its things like these that make me seriously question why I'm even bothering.

  11. Theres no 8x0's running anymore, got rid of them. ALSA is shut down in services (I assume you mean in sercies?) but there is no OSS listed there? Theres a sound, thats already running. So I don't know ...?

  12. Pointers on updating media then urpmi? I'm still getting used to all this stuff.

dmesg says in relation to this particular card C-Media PCI soundcard not found or device busy. It also says Intel ICH soundcard not found or device busy?

    I'm running kernel 2.4.

In the log it says C-Media PCI soundcard not found or device busy and then also Intel ICH soundcard not found or device busy. Then alsa: succeeded. Scratch that, got rid of the intel thing.

  13. Okay ... I go into Services and ALSA was stopped, so I go to start it and it says it starts OK but it doesn't start anyway.

Typing that in as root results in: /lib/modules/2.4.25-2mdk/kernel/sound/pci/snd-cmipci.o.gz: init_module: No such device

Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including inva lid IO or IRQ parameters.

You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg

    modprobe: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.25-2mdk/kernel/sound/pci/snd-cmipci.o.gz faile d

    modprobe: insmod snd-cmipci failed

    ?

  14. Okay I goto MCC and the options I have are either cmpci or snd-cmipci and I can't get anything with either of them selected. I /sbin/lsmod and snd-cmipci isn't in the list. Should it be? If so how can it be loaded? Or did you mean to fiddle with something else in MCC?

  15. Okay I need some pointers, have a soundcard that came with linux drivers. I can't get them to work. I can post the entire install file if anyone would like, but its a cm8738 card. ALSA has it listed, I try doing what it says on the ALSA page and I can't install the lib or utils packages as it says to, it says it can't find a make or make install and stops. When I follow the direction on the install on the CD it says modprobe: insmod snd-cmipci failed. I may have just followed the instructions wrong or something?

When I put the card in, it removed my old card that didn't work, and detected the new card automatically. Then when it went to start the sound stuff, it said "No soundcards found..." I go into harddrake, and its still listed there.

I try to follow the instructions, but they don't seem to be written in the best english (or maybe its just me ;)). It won't work. Could someone give me a very baby worded run down or some pointers on this card? Thanks in advance.

    STEPS TO BUILD DRIVER

    ================================================================================

    1. Backup the Config.in and Makefile in the sound driver directory

    (/usr/src/linux/driver/sound).

The Configure.help provide help when you config driver in step

4, please backup the original one (/usr/src/linux/Document) and

    copy this file.

The cmpci is document for the driver in detail, please copy it

to /usr/src/linux/Document/sound so you can refer it. Backup if

    there is already one.

    2. Extract the tar file by 'tar xvzf cmpci-xx.tar.gz' in the above

    directory.

    3. Change directory to /usr/src/linux

    4. Config cm8338 driver by 'make menuconfig', 'make config' or

    'make xconfig' command.

    5. Please select Sound Card (CONFIG_SOUND=m) support and CMPCI

driver (CONFIG_SOUND_CMPCI=m) as modules. Resident mode not tested.

For driver option, please refer 'DRIVER PARAMETER'

    6. Compile the kernel if necessary.

    7. Compile the modules by 'make modules'.

    8. Install the modules by 'make modules_install'

    INSTALL DRIVER

    ================================================================================

    1. Before first time to run the driver, create module dependency by

    'depmod -a'

    2. To install the driver manually, enter 'modprobe cmpci'.

    3. Driver installation for various distributions:

    a. Slackware 4.0

Add the 'modprobe cmpci' command in your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules

file.so you can start the driver automatically each time booting.

    b. Caldera OpenLinux 2.2

Use LISA to load the cmpci module.

    c. RedHat 6.0 and S.u.S.E. 6.1

    Add following command in /etc/conf.modules:

    alias sound cmpci

also visit http://www.cmedia.com.tw for installation instruction.

    DRIVER PARAMETER

    ================================================================================

Some functions for the cm8738 can be configured in Kernel Configuration

or modules parameters. Set these parameters to 1 to enable.

    spdif_loop: Enable S/PDIF loop, this route S/PDIF-in to S/PDIF-out

    directly.

four_ch: Enable 4 channels mode, rear-out or line-in will output

    the same as line-out.

rear_out: Enable this if you have independent rear-out jacket on

your sound card, otherwise line-in will be used as

    rear-out.

modem: You will need to set this parameter if you want to use

the HSP modem. You need install the pctel.o, the modem

    driver itself.

joystich: Enable joystick. You will need to install Linux joystick

    driver.

  16. Thanks guys .. I'm running 2.4.22-10mdk and this is the only way I could find to get sound working with this card unfortunately. And I shall update my sources later, thanks for the info artee ... being on 56k big downloads aren't what I call fun, I figure I'll set it up so I can snooze while it does it ...

  17. I Must be looking in the wrong spot if there is I guess ...

I go Configure > Install Software which starts rpmdrake "Software Install Manager" ... I forget what its called off my head ... type in kernel and don't get a source match. So unless its just on the cd and I'm not getting a match ..........?

Else I guess I'll just try for that rpm ... bah

  18. Okay ... well I goto software packages installation, and search kernel. But I don't get a match with source or devel.

    I get ...

    kernel2.4-marcelo-2.4.22-1mdk

    kernel-doc-2.4.22-10mdk

    kernel-doc-html-2.4.22-1mdk

    kernel-doc-pdf-2.4.22-1mdk

    kernel-doc-ps-2.4.22-1mdk

    kernel-enterprise-2.4.22.10mdk-1-1mdk

    kernel-i686-up-dadada

    kernel-p3-smp-dadada

    kernel-secure-2.4.22.10mdk-1-1mdk

    kernel-smp-2.4.22.10mdk-1-1mdk

  19. Heyas

Am trying to setup the file that ASUS provides for the AD1888 card on my mobo ... I download it and untar it with tar -xvzf alsa-driver-0.9.1adi.tgz and it does all that right. Then when I follow the next command ./configure --with-cards=intel8x0 and it goes fine until ... I get the following error:

checking for kernel version... The file /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h d oes not exist.

Please, install the package with full kernel sources for your distribution

or use --with-kernel=dir option to specify another directory with kernel

    sources (default is /usr/src/linux).

No idea what to do ;) So any help would be appreciated!
